I Lave abundant evidence that, Hv n o W staying at the Hotel Bristol, in this offering of good will and confident, 1* , . you reflect the sentiment of the great body Paris, and even the suite of apartmc.its 0 j- m y f e Uow-citizens of Bartow, irrespec- usually reserved for the Priuce of V* ales j tive of party or color. Hence, it is with • ‘ " * * ” regret I say that I cannot serve you, can not consent to have you announce my name as a candidate, since a state of af fairs exists which commands my services at home. My wife, t he mother of our ten children, though in health, can only move with crutches. Bom in Hancock county, in a mile of each other, we have sojourned together for fifty-four years. The young est child, a daughter, is with ns. Three of us make the family, with no man on the premises but him you ask to serve you. You will agree with me in saying my highest obligation is to serve them. Therefore, I cannot consent to serve you or to have my name announced as a candi date. With a wife, the sum of whose years, added to that of my own, makes one hundred and fifty-nine years, and the youngest daughter to provide for aud pro tect, I ararsure you will excuse me. With a full knowledge of my unchanged and unchangeable opinions of our consti tution aDd government, as established and adapted to the ends and for the pur poses expressed, that you, my fellow citi zens, with differing opinions, in a time of excitement, should so cheerfully coiiflde your interests to me, is honor enough for one more covetous than I am. I am con tent with the expressed will for the deed. I thank you. In return, please accept my abiding desire and earnest wish for your peace, prosperity and happiness. Let me conjure you not to strive against or seek to destroy one another, hut be at peace and love and take care of each other for the sake of Georgia and her good. Attend to her affairs. Contend earnestly for the union of the States and the constitution as formed to perpetuate it. Defend its flag as the emblem of its devotion to truth and liberty, the final cause of its formation, the peace, happi ness and general welfare of the people of the States united. The presence of a few such Nestors as Hon. Mark A. Cooper and General Eli Warren in our legislative halls,' would do' much to restore tranquillity at this time to the distracted and discordant Democ racy of the State. has been given np to the American mil- . lionaire. —An English traveler, who came over about tlio first of May, was knocked down by a hack before be was twenty feet from the ship, and has been confined in the eye infirmary ever since. He has just dictated his second volumn of “What I Saw in America.” —In connection with Arthur’s deliver ance on the subject of civil service, read the following extract from a letter ad dressed to him by President Hayes: “With a deep sense of my obligations tin der tlie constitution, 1 regard it as my plain duty to suspend you, in order that the office may be honestly administered.” —A Washington dispatch represents Chairman Jewell as displeased with the machinery of the Bepublican Congress ional committee. He has discovered that tlie chairman is usiag the facilities of thc committee to advertise a patent, and that the secretary, whose name.is McPherson, is circulating the prospectus of a book of which be is the author. New Chop Louisiana. Kice.—The first of new crop Louisiana rice has just been received by Messrs. Dan Taltnage’s Sons & Company in New Orleans. Re ports from various plantations are en couraging for the incoming crop, and if nothing unfavorable should arise in the harvesting of the gain, prospects point to a bountiful yield. —New Orleans lias neither cellars nor sewers, because the city rests on a sub stratum of marsh. The gutters have car ried ofl’ the drainage, or failed to, accord ing to the frequency of rains. The Sani tarians, a local society for the preserva tion of health, have now brought about a steady flow of water from the river throughout most of the streets. —A. M. Norcross, of Norwich, Con necticut, is in a dilemma. He can hard ly accept Garfield, and to vote against his party is repulsive to him. He finally de cides the matter by setting two hens with twelve eggs each. One he has dedicated to Hancock and the other to Garfield, and tlie hen hatching the greatest number of chickens will decide his vote. —“I den’t blame you, Dan; Hancock is a good fellow,” is the way Conkliug re sponded to General Butterfield’s declara tion that he should vote for the Demo cratic candidate. The woods are full of such men as Dan, and there arc lots of Republicans who out of the abundance of tbe heart are giving like expression to their sentiments. —President Roberts, of the Pennsylva nia Railroad Company, has issued a cir cular announcing that, in accordance with a resolution of the board of directors, the business of the company and politics must be separate, and that no officer or employe is permitted to mix in politics or bring in tlie name of tlie company with any scheme in behalf of any party or candidate. A Mother jlt Twelve Years.—A census enumerator in a New Hampshire town found one family where tbe mother’s age was 20, and that of her eldest son 14 years. Inquiry revealed tlie fact that the mother was married when 11 years and 0 months old to a man 23 years old. She is a native of Rhode Island, and claims to have been tbe youngest mother in the State. —The British Museum has received a fine clay cylinder from tlie excavations of Babylon containing sixty lines of cunei form writing of a time (205 B. C.) when Antioclius the Great was wintering at Babylon. Sir H. C. Rawlinson says that the employes of the British Museum will be permitted for two years longer to make excavations of tbe mounds of Assyria and Babylon. Edison’s Quadruples in Question. Edison, tbe inventor, will be obliged to enter the lists at tlie patent office and de fend bis right to tlie quadruplex, one of bis most valuable inventions used in tele graphy. n. C. Nicholson, of Kentucky, claims that lie is really tbe inventor of the vital principal, and asks that the pat ent of Edison be set aside. The case is being considered, and if found to be sus tained by the appearance of equity, will be granted. —The first dud in the United States was fought at Plymouth, Massachusetts, on the 18th of Jane, 1721, between Ed ward Doty and Edward Leicester, two servants, both of whom were wounded. For this outrage |ney were sentenced to punishment of having their heads and feet tied together, and lying thus for twenty-four hours without food or drink. After suffering, however, in that painful posture an hour, at their masters’ inter cession and their own humble request, with the promise of amendment, they were released by the governor. —Senator McDonald has been through one-third the cojnties of Indiana, and bis experience is tlii never has a Democratic ticket been hailed with greater enthusi asm than Hancock and English, that no where does he lliear of any Democrats going off, but tlnusands of Republicans joining tbe ranks English is chairman of the State conmittee. Hendricks and Landers are on t e executive committee, and they promisi the hugest victory in October ever giv< i in the State. A General Stampede.—Colonel Forney, the fonifer Republican leader in Pennsylvania, wl» lately visited General Hancock, says: ‘b. candidate for presi dent is compellcdfo receive and answer many letters, ad General. Hancock’s mail is enormo i. His correspondence includes congrati ation from soldiers (Re publicans and D mocrat^,) colored men, editors, foreigner and politicians. Any one who doubts ia steady sentiment in favor of Hancock has only to glance at these letters. T1 hope of the ring man agers that the fui r for Hancock is dying out, or that it wil soon subside, is so fal- Sherman and the Silver Dollar. According to a special from Washington to the Courier-Journal, there has been a great deal of misinformation telegraphed thence as to what is to be done with the surplus silver. There is no fear that stor age room will not he found. It is more than suspected that Secretary Shennau was moved by enmity to tli<* silver dollar when he asked for S100,000to build vaults for storage purposes. The fact that so many million silver dollars are in posses sion of the government is largely due to Sherman’s persistent refusal to take any steps to promote their circulation. From the time the silver bill be came a law, Sbennan has opposed Treas urer Giltillan in liis efforts to pay out sil ver and put it in circulation. At one time, almost two years ago, Gilfillan had succeeded in disposing monthly of all that was coined, but Sbennan stopped him, in sisting that he was violating the law by discriminating in favor of silver. Finally be grudgingly consented that ten per cent, of tlie salaries of persons employed in the departments should be paid iu silver. This, however, amounts to next to noth ing. It simply fills the tills of retail shop keepers of Washington with silve/ dollars, which are almost immediately exchanged at the treasury for silver certificates. Con gress appropriated at the last session $20,- 000 to build vaults for storing silver, and the work is about to be begun at thc Phil adelphia mint. This will afford ample fa cilities, and Treasurer Gilfillan says that all the silver that can be coined between now and thc meeting of Congress will be taken care of. -sr A SURE CURE *or all tlie disease? for which It is recommended, and always perfectly eafe in the hands of even the most inexperienced persons. BALTIMORE, Mo. ■ UnintKMV at Xlglit- A singular phenomenon was observed in the heavens last night during the approach of the rain. The full moon hung low in the east, and against the clouds in the west was p-oduccd a perfect rainbow, stretching from horizon to horizon. The bow showed no tints; only a pale, vapor ish looking curve swept the sky, remaining distinct and unchanged for about twenty minutes. It was observed by a number of people. —Mrs. Wodebouse, who was married lately to the Marquis of Anglesey, wore a bridal dress of pearl-colored satin, almost covered with white lace, aud a Leghorn bonnet, shaded by ostrich plumes. She was given away by the father of her hus band’s first w ife—a lady who died many years ago. It is said that the Marquis and Marchioness intend to live in Paris. Before the days of chloroform there was a certain quack in San Francisco who advertised toothdrawing without pain. The patient was placed in a chair, and tho instrument applied to to his tooth with a wrench, followed by a roar from the un pleasantly surprised sufferer. “Stop!” cried the dentist, “compose yourself. I told you I would give you no pain, but I only just gave you the twinge as a spec imen, to show you Cartwright’s method of operating.” Again the instrument was pplied—another tug, another roar. Now, don’t be impatient; that is Du- merge’s way; be seated and be calm; you will now be sensible of tbe superiority of my method.” Another application—an other tug, another roar. “Pray he quiet; this is Parkinson’s mode, and you don’t like it; no wonder.” By this time the tooth hung by a thread, and whipping it out the operator exultantly exclaimed: “This, is my mode of tooth-drawing without pain, and you are now enabled to compare it with tlie. operations of Cartwright, Du- meigc aud Farkinson.” PKOVEEDS, tr Rcnd ot. sadmm BopXtttn, Red ycavrillDe rtrongf LcaliLy end happy.” “Ladies*; do you' •wont to be itiyA in ■■ifWuH Tiicii use Hop 1-iUc: a.
