If v?e knew tlie carqs and crosses, | 1
Crowding round our neighbors Way,
If we knew the little fosses,
Sorely grevlous day by day,
Would we then so often chide him,
For his lack of thrift and gain—
Leaving on his heart a shadow, _
Leaving on our lives a stain.
If we knew the clouds above us,
Held by gentle blessings there,
Would we turn away all trembling,
In our blind and weak despair ?7
Would we shrink from little shadows,
Lying on the dewy grass,
While ’tis only birds of Eden, » J
Just in mercy flying past?
If we knew the silent sfoiy, .
Quivering through the heart of pain,
Would our womanhood dare doom them
Back to haunts of guilt hg'ain ?
Life bath many a tangled cros-.ing,
Joy hath many a Weak of woe;
And the cheeks, tearwashed, are whitest,
This the blessed angels know.
Let us reach in our bosoms ^ 2 *
For the koy to other lives,
And with love towards erring nature,
Cherish good that still survives;
So that when our disrobed spirits
Soar to realms of light again,
We may say dear Father judge us
As we judge our fellop’-mep.-
THE OBELISK.
As Seen by a Haconitc.
The following discretion of the cele
brated obelisk is from the pe/i of a youn;
Macon gentleman, just returned from
New York,
Among other things which I was de
termined to see while in New York, was
the Alexandrian Obelisk. I had heard
that the vessel containing it was lying at
Twenty-third street, on the "East river.
With a couple of friends I repaired thither
but found the boat had gone higher up
the river to Fifty-third street, I found on
seeing the Herald one morning, that the
steamer had again moved her moorfpgs,
this time to Seventy-third street on the
North river. With my two Macon friends
I essayed once more to see the monolith,
only to find that the ship had returned to
her former position at Fifty-third street,
on the East river.
A day or two afterwyds my friends de
parted for home without having obtained
a glimpse of the misnamed “Cleopatra’s
needle.” I continued my search, confi
dent that the' stone would have t^stop
somewhere. I found it*finally, but not at
Fifty-third street. - It had been removed
to Clifton, on Staten. Island., There is a
marine railway at this place, and only by
its aid was it considered ]>ossible to get
the massive stone out of the ship, al
though it necessitates the stone being, put
on a scow and towed up the river. Visitors
are not allowed to enter upon the prem
ises, but catching sight of Lieutenant
Goi ringe, commander of the ship, I Geck-
oned him to me, and obtained permission
to cross the gang-plank,
{ticed such evidence. of prosperity among
~ the Gate City’s merchants ami capital
ists. Many line residences and business
houses are in course - of erection, among
the latter is one similar to Nussbauai
Danuebcrg’s in size, with more ornamen
tation, however, which Judge Hillyer is
erecting for our former energetic towns
men, Frank G. Hancock, who will occu-
’py the entire structure.
This city has been likened to Chicago
and described as a city of “wind ant
mortgage.” We protest against such ad
jectives, as they are unjustly .applied.
Atlanta is growing iu population,
wealth, morals, and importance more rap
idly than any city in the South. At no
distant day, we predict, every citizen of
Geoigia will, with pride, point to the Gate
City as the most enterprising and flourish
ing city iu the South.
We sat in the thirty-fifth Senatorial
convention yesterday, saw the last twenty-
five of the one- hundred and ninety-fire
ballots, and listened to an interesting
speech advocating the dissolution of the
partnership existing between Fulton,
Cobb, and Clayton counties. However,
as Clayton never has had the Senatorship,
she has been the silent partner in the ro
tation business. If was made by our ven
erable Teutonic brother Mayer, well known
to the fraternity as a regular attendant at
all our Masonic convocations.
Fulton county had six votes, Cobb four,
Clayton two. For nearly three days the
vote stood six and six, Cobb and Clayton
having combined against Fulton, as she
has had the nomination for the last twelve
years.
It Is gratifying to the old line Demo
crats to know its chairman, Gen. P. W.
Alexander, is for Norwood, and so is the
nominee, W. T. Winn, both of Cobb
county. Though their labor was onerons,
their constituents will gladly exclaim,
“Well done thou good and faithful ser
vants.” , B. C. J.

Waco—Sain and Frank Fossett, Ed
Niebolo and Joe Wright have been arrest
ed, charged with the' murder of B. J.
Hodges and Mattie Woods on July 12th.
Wright has confessed everything.
Havana, Sept. 4.—Steamer Niagara,
which left New York a day later than the
City of Vera Cruz, arrived yesterday
morning. She reports that she encoun
tered very heavy weather.
Augusta, Me., Sept. 4.—General

to the meeting he refused to be escorted

Savannah, Ga., Sept 4.—A special to
the Horning News from St. Augustiue,
says that last night seven survivors of the
Vera Cruz arrived from Halifax river.
The party consists of Owens, a passenger,
an engineer, an oiler, and four seamen.
On Sunday, at 5:30 o’clock, the sea

The vessel, as it now lies, is completely J man lost. Tlje steamer sank on the 28th,
it of the water, rating upon a support thirty miles from the coast. It is sup-
out
of immeusely heavy timbers, bavin:
been drawn to its present position by
single huge chain, with links over a foot
long, and braced in the centre to keep
them from flattening. A powerful engine
wincing up tills chain drew the frame
work to which the ship was fastened, up
an incliucd plane. The bottom of the Des-
souk now stands above high water. Shi
is built inmost entirely of iron. Her
ribs and knees, as well as sides, are all
iron; only the decks are wooden. Near
her bow, upon the starboard side, thirty-
one plates have been removed, and
also the ribs crossing the opening
made. The hole in her side measures
about twenty feet long by nine feet high,
exposing a small portion of the point to
view from the outside. The stone is rose-
colored syenite, hard and lustrous. It
fits the lower part of the hold almost as
if the vessel was made for it, only a lit
tle timber keeping it from direct contact
with the irons. There is just space
enough betweeii the sides of the boat and
the mass for one to pass easily. Braces
and props supported it from the sides to
keep in position, hut these are now re
moved. Heavy timbers are being placed
in position on which to put the stone; from
these it will be lowered to the scow that
is to receive it.
In shape, the obelisk is almost square.
At the base it is broken off obliquely. It
tapers slightly until within a few feet of
the top, where it terminates iu a triangu
lar ^pyramid. The “needle” proper is
seventy feet long. The base stones will
elevate it about thirty feet more. The
pedestal was shipped in the upper part of
the vessel, and was not so much trouble
to manage as the shaft.
The Inscriptions are quite deep and av
erage a little over a foot square in size.
Their shape it is impossible to describe,
especially by one compelled to view them
from so near a position. The ouly thing
that seemed familiar was a number of
straight lines parallel,and about afoot
long. The others seem to be many un
certain shaped curves three or four inches
wide—U shaped and Y shaped and many
other shapes, from 12 to 16 inches tall.
Four hundred thousand pounds or two
hundred tons is the weight of this me
mento of the Ptolomis and Baineses.
Could their achievements have beqn as
remaikablc as the monuments that record
them? •
A knoll in Central Park, near Belve
dere Castle, is the site upon which it is-to
stand. How fit is its new position! TBe
skill and science of the cultured Egyp
tian of three thousand five-hundred years
ago, standing in grandeur amidst the
most intelligent and remarkable people of
the prescnt,exciting their admiration and
wonder. Yet those people are supposed
to have been • unacquainted witli gun
powder and steam. If so, still more re
markable, the quarry, transport and erec
tion of this huge inas3~- But we danot

riving in Atlanta, our attention was firet
attracted by a magnificent NorwoodTian-
ner, floatiug with an air of triumph across
Alabama street. Feeling we would be
neath its wavy folds find an atmosphere
of purity redolent with the patriotism of
true Democracy (which is a government
of the people made by the people) we
hastened there.
That the[chival.ic gentleman, celebrated

Norwood executive committee is guarantee
that from there no documents will eman
ate of such character as would cause a gen
tleman to blush were he to admit their par
entage or adoption. This committee is
exceedingly sanguine of success. Every
day thousands of new names are added to
thousands of Norwood clubs organized
in every county from Dade and Rabun in
the mountains to Decatur and Camden by
the sea.
It is an undeniable fact tbatNorwood is
gaining strength daily. Men who have
been undecided are rapidly and wisely
falling into line under the leadership of
such true, pure anil .often-tried Georgians
as Hiram Warner, Alexander Stephens,
