m $m*st $s 3 Another ttfceory Dusted. A widow wlio was going to leave the city held an audio* of her household r' feels yesterday, and everything went prompt sale until little but the bedstead was left. Just before this was put up some of the women went spying around, and discovered that It was infested by bed-bugs. This -feet was noised around until it came to the ears of the auctioneer, who mounted his box and said: “Words cannot express the poignancy of my sorrow over the base canard which lias been put in circulation in this crowd. X have sold goods in this town for twenty- nine long years,.and this is the first in stance in which bugs have been permitted to step between use and the purchasing public. Ladles and gentlemen, if there a bug in or about the bedstead I want see him. I cannot and will not believe there is. It would be a slander—a most foul slander—on the character of this worthy widow, who is about to remove to the State of Ohio."” Being invited-to step down and view the bugs for liimselt, he made an inspec tion. They were there. They were gal loping in and out and up and down, and it was no use to dispute the fact. “Ladies and gentlemen,” said the auc tioneer as he resumed his post, “I found bugs. I don’t exactly remember the La tin name for them, but they are there And now let me talk to you as a friend. Bed-bugs were not made for a life of case. It is a law of nature that they should inhabit bedsteads. They can no more go out under the barn and make a living than a dog can be- some an eagle and float through cpace. The aversion among you to •this insect is founded on false principles. His bite scarcely irritates the sleeper, but it cleanses and purifies the blood. But for the bed-bugs of this coun try we should all have boils and carbun cles. They keep down warts. They cause moles to disappear. Give them a chanoe and they would remove corns without pain. The great—” “Fifty cents!” called an old woman who remembered that she had a remedy at home. “Fiftycents! I am offered fifty cents for a $10 bedstead, and as I was going to say, the great Napoleon always asked for a bed with bugs in it. I am offered fifty cents, and yet Caesar had his bugs. ' am ” “One dollar.” “I am offered one dollar, and yet the poets of Greece immortalized Hie insects before you. This widow tells me that she has not had an ache or a pain since the first bug made his appearanee. How many of you have read what Homer wrote of them 1* What was the fountain of Mo zart’s twelfth mass ? And yet ” “Two dollars.” “And yet I hear only two dollars!. Do you have headache ? Are you afflicted with giddiness ? Do you have roaring in the ears?” “Three dollars.” “My friends, let me go home and get my copy of Paradise Lost and read to you one short chapter. What did Milton- ■' “Four dollars!” “Ah! I begin to see that art and culture are not unknown to the audience. Did Alexander the Great have boils ? Never, not a one! And why ?” “Five dollars!” “I am bid five dollars. I would like to quote one verse from a well-known Latin poet, but time presses, and this bedstead is sold for five dollars, cash on the nail. I will now direct your cultured attention to that cookstove with a cracked oven.”— Detroit Free Press. Blaine Explains to Garfield.— Augusta, September 14,1880. To Gen. Jat. A. Garfield, itentor O : The net results of yesterday’s election, as nearly as can be stated at this hour, 3 r. si., Tuesday, is about as follows: The Republicans have carried the first, second and third Congressional districts, while the Fusionlsts have carried the fourth and fifth. The Republicans have carried both branches of the Legislature by a strong majority, reaching, perhaps, two-thirds of each House. On the popu lar vote for Governor, Davis and Piaisted have each over 72,000 votes, with the probabilities in favor of Piaisted coming out a few hundred, perhaps a thousand ahead. The tesult is undeniably a sur prise to us, and equally so to the mass of the Democratic party in M&ine. Our canvass was never more accurately taken, and it showed on Wednesday last a total vote for Davis of a trifle over 70,000, with an assured majority of 0,000 as the mini mum. In the four days preceding the election we lost over 3,000 votes by means well known to the managers of the na tional Democratic campaign, and which do not call for further specification from me. The total cost is variously estimated at from $75,000 to $100,000, and the money all came from beyond the State. Such scenes were never before witnessed in Maine. [Signed] J. G. Blaine. The Summer Solstice. One great reason why hot weather is so debilitating lies in the fact that the body is exhausted by the labors of the year. Indeed, it is natural that this should be so. In order, therefore, to resist this ten dency to exhaustion it only becomes nec essary to reinvigorate the body, which can readily be done by Warner’s Safe Tonic.
