Death of Bishop Doggett.
Many sad hearts were made in Georgia
by the announcement of the death of (Ms
eminent divine. He presided twice over
the South Georgia Conference of the
Southern Church, once at Americas and
last year at Ferry. Few men so endeared
themselves, in so short a time, -to the
hearts of our people as did Bishop Dog
gett. Defined, polished, educated, and
with ail the noble traits that go to make
up a grand character, he stood forth as the
peer of the most gifted divines of any
country.
TVe clip the following from the Atlanta
Constitution:
Bishop uavid S. Doggett, whose death
at bis residence in Richmond on Wednes
day night has already been reported, was
one of the most popular as well as one of
the ablest divines in the Methodist church.
He was born in Lancaster county, Vir
ginia, in 1810. His father was a worthy
member of the bar of that county, and
S racticed in the courts of that and ueigh-
oring counties. The son had ail the ad
vantages of the schools in the county in
which he lived, and availed himself of
them. At an early age he read law under
his father, with the intention of entering
that profession. This design, however,
he abandoned, and before he was seven
teen began to study for the ministry. Be
fore he was eighteen he entered the pnl-
pit. Soon aller arriviug-at the age of man
hood Dr. Doggett entered the Randolph-
Macon College, an institution conducted
by the Methodist church, as chaplain.
Here he was a diligent student, and dur
ing the yeare he occupied this position
applied himself to his duties with an
earnestness which won the admiration
and respect of his professors. After leav
ing Randolph-Macon the deceased was
assigned a charge, and from that time till
about 1800 he preached in almost all of
the principal churches of his denomina
tion in the State. In 1860 he was made
Disgraceful.—A correspondent of
the Philadelphia Times says: “At the Re
publican demonstration held at Lan&ford,
Carbon county, on Saturday night,
prominent feature was a large transpa
rcncy, carried on a wagon, having on its
front a representation of a. skull, cross-
bones and cofiin, with K. K. K., and be
low it the words: ‘Hancock’3 coat-of-
arms.” On the reverse, a gallows, with
rope dangling therefrom. The other end
of the rope wa3 fastened around the neck
of a portrait of Gen. Hancock. For a par
ty that pretends to be a soldier’s party,
and to be the friend of the Union soldier,
to so represent Pennsylvania’s great sol
dier shows very plainly that the Mosby-
Longstrcet element is strongly predomi
nant. It was a*i insult to a brave general
and ought to be condemned by all honest
men, irrespective of party. Tne transpa
rency was gotten up by a clerk in the em
ploy of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation
Company.
I A Valuable Relic Capt. William
Rogers brought to the Times office a sec
tion of the trunk of a white oak tree con
taining in its center an unexploded Napo
leon ten pounder spherical case shot, sent
from a Confederate cannon during the
progress of the second day’s fight at t'hic-
amauga, September IS, 1863, sixteen
years ago. The tree was on the lot of
Hall, on Cbicamauga battlefield, and

conference, but was prevented by the at
tack which resulted in his death.

The accidental sending of telegrams
from MAfthall Jewell to the Democratic
headquarters, by the Western Union Tel
egraph Company, disclosed a Republican
plot to flood Florida with Republican vo
ters. Jewell tried to wriggle out by say
ing that he bad heard that Democratic
repeaters had been scut there, and sent
messages of warning. The falsity of Jew
ell’s excuse is now proved by the affida
vit of Mr. A. B. McCabe, of Asbnry Park,
which will be printed in the Sun to-mor
row. Mr. McCabe was a fellow-passen
ger with one installment of Jewell’s re
peaters, forwarded from this City to Flor
ida, in pursuance of the policy begun in
Indiana.
The weight of Mr. SfcCabe’s testimony
Is signally empliAsiicd by the fact that he
could have bad no intimation of the
Scheme contemplated by the Republican
managers, since he left Jacksonville, vm
his return to New York, on October 10,
or nearly a week before Jewell’s tele
grams were published. He Saw quite
enough, however, to arouse his own sus
picions, and the facts recited by him ac
quire a sinister meaning in the light of the
now notorious dispatches. The affidavit
Is as follows:
“Asbubv F-.Uik, Monmouth Co., N.
J.—Allen ]>. McCabe, being duly sworn,
deposes and says that he is a resident of
Oceau Grove, Monmouth county, N. J.;
that on October 1,1880, he left-New York
on the steamer Western Texas for Flori
da; that there were on board of the same
vessel in the steerage about a hundred
rough-looking fellows, who, according to
the statement made by the captain of the
vessel to this deponent, were railroad la
borers, hired to work on the Waycross
and East FloriJa railroad. Deponent
says that the said railroad is a line projec
ted between Femandina and Jacksonville;
that some work has been done on the
Fernandina end, but that no work is now
doing, or apparently in contemplation, on
the Jacksonville end. Deponent further
says that on the arrival of the Western
Texas at Fernandina, on the evening of
Tuesday, October 5, the alleged laborers
were landed at Fernandina, but that oil
Saturday, October 0, he saw a number of
these men in Jacksonville, and that on
Monday, October 11, he saw and recog
nized in the streets of Jacksonville nearly
the whole body of the alleged workmen
who bad come down with him on the
steamer; that deponent, on the Jackson
ville eud of the Waycross railroad, inter
rogated several of these men as to their
business in that place, saying: ‘ I thought
you fellows had come down to work on
the railroad.’ To which the answer was,
‘We ain’t going to work on no railroad.’
That to furlitcr inquiries they
refused to make any reply, and
Walked away. And deponent further
says, that from October 9th to October
10th, at which latter date he left Jackson
ville for New York, he saw great numbers
of the alleged laborers going up to the
Republican quarters on Bay street-; that
he asked the reason of their visits to said
headquarters, but received no answer, and
deponent further says that Horatio Jen
kins, Jr., is the chairman of the Republi
can executive committee of Florida.
“Subscribed and sworn to this 20th day
of October, A. D. 1SSO, before me.
David Harvey, Jb.,
“Notary Public, Asbwfy Park, N. J.”
Other affidavits, testifying to Mr. Mc
Cabe’s high social and business reputation,
are attached. Also, that he left New
York on the steamer sailing for Jackson
ville on the 1st of October, and returned
last week.
Another Speeokfrom Hancock.
Governor’s -Island, N. Y., October
80.—Owing to the weather, very few vis
itors appeared up to 2 p. m. Prominent
among those who paid their respects to
Gen.'HanCodk were Admiral DeFreyci-
net, commanding the French fleet; Lord
Lymingtbn, and Generals McDowell,
Beauregard, of Louisiana; Wilcox, of Ma
ryland; G. W. Smith, of New York; Lilly,
'of Virginia, and Ward, ol Ohio.
Af3 o’clock this evening a delegation
of about 250 students of the medical and
•academic classes of the University of New
York visited Governor’s Island to pay
‘their tespects to General Hancock. They
were received in the headquarters of the
: General, where the students ranged them-
sbTves In a double line, when General
‘Hancock entered the room. Thomas
Courtney, spokesman for the party, ad
vanced aud delivered an address highly
eulogistic of the General, and wishing him
a crowning victory on Tuesday. The
General, in reply, spoke as follows:
“I fee! honored by your visit. In your
remarks in eulogy of my career, you do
me too much honor. [Cries of ‘no, no.*]
I have always endeavored to do my duty
to the best of my ability in the various
positions in which I have been placed in
the public service, hut further than that I
claim no credit. I spy this because it
would be indelicate in me to hear com
pliments to which I am not entitled. The
presence of so many young men from the
schools of the city of New York who have
visited me recently, many of whom will
now probably cast their ballots for the
firet time, indicates that the party of con
stitutional government is a growing one,
and I feel confident that that fact will be
shown in the coming election. The ques
tions involved are so momentous to the
people that I have no doubt of it.”
The students were then individually,
introduced, and when the process of
handshaking wa3 gone through with,
they gathered in front of the building anc
gave three cheers for the Geueral.
General Hancock received two beautiful
gold-headed canes, one from Bradford,
Pa., and the other from Norwalk, Huron
county, Ohio—both the result of voting
contests at fairs—last evening.

occasions.
Eliza Logan and Julia Dean will be re
membered by old theatre goers here as
the most distinguished in the role of the
Greek maiden, and probably Edmund R.
Daltoq and George Karnes as the most
popular in that of the Barbarian. It has
not been presented in Macon since the
war, and of course is almost entirely un
known to the younger people. As a love
play It has been pronounced by the critics
as superior to either Bulwer’s “Lady of
Lyons” or Knowles’ “Hunchback.” In
New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and
Boston, under the old starring system,
“Ingomar” was a weekly event, and at
that time found a place in the repertoire
of all the dramatic celebrities, male and
female, from tho simple fact that both
parts ore equal, aud in theatrical par
lance, “who captured the house” was a
question of merit. The minor parts are
all good, and the plot so simple and in
teresting there is little wonder that the
piece jumped into public favor from its
first production, and that it will keep its
place in the standard drama so long as
theatricals shall keep a place in public
amusements.
Ingomar is chief O? the “Alamanni,” a
band of barbarians, among whom his
word and will is law. He knows nothing
of civilisation, and has no home save the
forests, uo canopy save the heavens. Par
thenia is the daughter of Myron, an ar
morer, who strolls, too, from his native
town, Masilia, and is captured by the Ala-
manni and taken before their chief. In
gomar aud his followers put a price upon
his head, and condemn the old man to
menial service, at which he is discovered
by Parthenia, who comes in search of her
father. An agreement is made by which
Myron is allowed to return to his home in
search of means for paying the ransom,
Parthenia in the meantime r
with the savages until the receipt of the
required amount. From this point in the
piece, “Ingomar” and “Parthenia” are
prominently before the audience. “Ingo
mar,” who knows nothing of love or tho
finer feelings, gradually becomes so at
tached to his fail captive that, despite the
entreaties of the Alamauni, he concludes
to enter the Greek city of Masilia
with Parthenia, aud under her
protection. Here the town is
aroused, and the Timarch called upon
for assistance, looking to the release of
the captives. Parthenia is loved by a rich
miser known as Polydor, who is univer
sally despised for his greediness and re
pulsive nature, but who is most earnest
with his love and his wealth if repaid by
the hand and heart of the armorer’s pret
ty daughter. Here we find that truly the
course of love is by no means certain, and
the hero and heroine are put to many
trials and embarrassing vicissitudes. But
time heals all tilings. *" Ingomar becomes
thoroughly civilized, Parthenia teaches
love in all'itt excellence, the good people
of Masilia begin to think Ingomar a very
civil sort of savage, Polydor is given the
cold shoulder, and that pretty sentiment
of two hearts and two souls, quoted at
the head of this notice, is - realized in
in all its force and beauty. Ingomar goes
no more to the forests, but becomes fondly
attached to the old man and his mother-in-
law, and is made a citizen of Masilia.
There are many pleasing incidents in the
piece which have slipped from memory,
but the foregoing will suffice to show that
a rare intellectual feast is in store for all
who attend Miss Belgarde’s performance
on Saturday night. The selection is a
fortunate one, aud we predict for the oc
casion a full house, and an enthusiastic
reception for the distinguished lady who
conics to us for the first time, but whose
reputation has been so abundantly estab
lished in the metropolitan cities as to
leave no doubt that “Ingomar” will prove
one of the leading features of our dramat
ic months.
