«w»J egoeme at cnisrxuiBST. X. I. E. What is like tliy life?—not morn; The silent sweep of splendor is too great; Nor noonday’s silent dullness all forlorn; But that dear tender twilight time, When softened tints with dearer memo ries mate, ,. . . To fall into oar dreams with perfect rhyme. For when the God of day Forsakes our blushing skies, Far brighter tints are bom Within the evening’s half closed eyes. And when the God of love Forsakes'a loving life,- Lo! all the skies of memory With tender thoughts are rife. And what to thee, are empires lost or won, When boyish arms unclasp, and memo ries are begun ? A Specimen or How llie Republican l>rcw Fosters Cincinnati Trade. A letter from a business house of the South to a prominent business firm of this city says: “So far as buying goods is con cerned, I will say d—n a city that will allow two papers, Commercial and Ga zette, to abuse a section as they are doing, and then have the cheek to expect the trade of the men they thus abuse. My traveling salesman says he can get away with alfCincinnati drummers by simply carrying your Republican abusive papers and using them on the road. The mer chants of Cincinnati will not get over these things soon. I, of course, know what a great injustice this would he to such firms as yours; but, gentlemen, Nashville, Lou isville, Knoxville, and all other Southern cities, nse these dirty sheets, full of the blackest lies that low-flung imagination- can conceive. Look to your interests, and see if a remedy cannot be found. Excuse me for thus taking your time, but 1 am, like many of tny brother merchants, full and running over—have too .much self- respect to stand such treatment. IF we are such degraded, worthless people, our hard-earned cash Is too mean for such people a3 well.”—Cincinnati Enquirer. The Election Biot in Darien. We clip the following from the Darien Gazette: We regret to say that this election lias been characterized by incidents which have never occurred in tlii3 town, even in the days of the Campbell regime. So far as the white voters were concerned, with a few exceptions, they acted as usual, qui etly and peaceably on both sides, though nine-tenths were for the nominees. But it lias been exemplified b7 the results of this election that the colored man en masse will stand no opposition from his race in the minority. In other words, forty negroes have no right to vote against a large number, without being mobbed, wounded and killedforso doing. The great majority of the negroes went for Dr. Har ris. They bulldozed the minority colored crowd until they retired to a corner of the court house square. They followed them up there with threats and club9, and the Gignilliat negroes losing all patience un der this continued aggression, a fight en sued. The Gignilliat negroes (who are called in local parlance country negroes) started home, going up Broad street. What are called the town negroes, rein forced with pistols and whisky, pursued them. At Strain’s corner the two parties met again. The country negroes paid no attention to this following until it was cried out that the town negroes were heating one of their men; then they rushed back. Mr. T. H. Gignilliat at that mo ment stepped in between the contending parties and told them that he was an offi cer of the town, that he commanded the peace and that he required both parties to disperse. The upper or Gignilliat crowd obeyed, hat the lower town negroes marched on him with drawn pistols. Mr. George Atwood caught him by the collar and jerked him out of the fracas. Then the firing began by the town negroes so- called, and resulted in the death of one and the wounding of three of the country negroes, who had no firearms. A coro ner’s inquest has been held, and there is a determined purj os: to bring the perpetra tors aud their Instigators of this outrage, who are known, to justice. fiOILIXG WATER IX A SHEET OF Paper.—Nature is publishing a series of attractive articles on “Physics without Apparatus.” In the latest number are given experiments for boiling water and melting lead on a piece of paper: Take a piece of paper and fold it up, at school boys do, into a square box without a lid. Hang this up to a walking-stick by four threads, aud support the stick on books or any other convenient props. Then a lamp or taper must be placed under this dainty caldron. In a few minutes the water will boil. The only fear is lest the threads should catch fire and let the water spill into the lamp and over the table. The flame must not therefore be too large. The paper does not burn, because it is wet, aud even if it resisted the wet it still would not burn through, because the heat imparted to it on one side by the flame would be very rapidly conducted away by the water on the other. Another experiment of a similar nature, but perhaps even more striking, is as follows: Twist up the edge of a common playing card or oilier bit of card board, so as to fashion it into a light tray. On this tray place a layer of small shots or bits of lead, and heat it over the flame of a lamp. The lead will melt, but the card will net burn. It may be charred a little ronntl the edges, hut immediately below the lead it will not be burned, for here again the lead conducts off the heat on one side as fast as it is supplied on the other. _ _ _ —Silver Spray Cologne is the fashiona ble perfume. Valentino. Poverty and Genius'.—The history of those who, by their genius aud untiring energy, have taken the sting from poverty and "won for themselves a place in the catalogue of the illustrious, must ever be interesting to the sons of toil. The great ness of real worth belongs to such charac ters; apart from high birth and proudly swelling titles, from the splendor of wealth and station, and frequently with out the advantage of early education, the children of penury have marched on to honor, patiently triumphing over the ob stacles which impeded their progress. The working man inay well glory in the new and noble aristocracy which his gif~ id companions at the loom, the plow, and the anvil have helped to establish, a id be stimulated by tlieir example to show him self worthy of the fraternity to which he belongs. I hereby certify that I have been a pra ncing physician for twenty-seven years and for many chronic cases in my prac tice do recommend Warner’s Kidney and Liver Cure. It was upon my advice that G. W. About 5 o’clock last evening a young man named Selieic, living with a" family named Baker, six miles from New Canton, during Mr. Ba ker’s absence from home, insisted that his daughter, fifteen years of age, to whom he had become attached, should promise. to marry him. This was refused, whereupon; he drew a revolver, aud, after first shoot ing the dog, immediately shot the mother and then the girl whose hand he sought. He next placed the pistol to his own tem ple and fired. Eveiy shot proved fatal. A younger daughter witnessed the tragedy and gave the above facts in Ler.testimony before a coroner’s jury..
