Washington*, October 10.—Secretary
Scliurz lias received r » telegram from GOv.
l'itkin, saying tM great excitement pre
vails in western Colorado over the killing
of a Ute and the subsequent murder of
voung Jackson by the Indians. After de
tailing the circumstances of the affair,
Governor Pitkin says the Utes are lawless
ly inclined since.-Ouraj’s death, and if
the general government does not protect
lier citizens the State will. He urges the
immediate removal of the Urvcompabgres
to the north of Uncompahgro river, or
some other point where they will be re
mote from the whites, and from the road
over which the food for the whites to sub

RandolphVletter to Hancock.
New York, October 10.—The follow
ing is ex-Governor Randolph’s letter to
General Hancock on the tariff question:
Morrixtotcn, October 11.—My Dear
General: My attention is called to-day to
the interview, or reported interview, had
with you by a person representing the Pat
terson Guardian, of this State. As I read
the report, it seems to mo yon were very
imperfectly understood, or very indiffer
ently reported. I come to this conclusion
because of my kuowledgejof your Views
upon the tariff question, The report does
you injustice. This subject is one which
our manufacturing friends are very Solici
tous about, and very property so. I regret
that your views upon the tariff question,
as I understand Ui*m\ to be, had not found
fuller expression iu your letter of accep
tance. If f. misrepresentations of your
tariff views continue, woulddt not be wise
and just to take some occasion to put
yourself right ? Very truly yours,
Tuos. F. Random 1 ii.

The Epiacopal Convention.
New York, October 16.—In the houso
of deputies of the Protestant Episcopal
Church Convention the following pream
ble aud resolution were recommended for
adoption and placed on the calendar:
Whereas, The work of the chu:ch of
Christ and the best interests of Christian
civilization are seriously impeded in or.e
of the territories of the United States by
the existence of polygamy, recognized by
a large proportion of the community as a
religious institution; and, whereas, polyg
amy is not only contrary to the law of
God, but is also forbidden .under severe
penalties in the territories of the United
States, and also by an act of Congress
which lias been declared constitutional
by the Supreme Court of the Uuiled
States, therefore be it
litsclted, (tbo bouse of bishops con
curring), That while there are peculiar
difficulties in the execution of this law
owing to tlie religious fanaticism,doubtless
oftentimes sincere, by which the institu
tion of polygamy is upheld, and especially
to[the fact that the interests of many inno
cent persons are unhappily involved, it is
still the duty of every Christian and citi
zen of this republic to use his iufluence to
aid the United Stales In bringing about as
speedily as possible a merciful but firm
enforcement of the law in regard to po
lygamy or’bigamy in the territories of the
United States.
Tlie petition of the several parishes
of the missionary jurisdiction of Dakota,
asking for admission as a regular diocese;
and the report of tlie committee on new
dioceses, adverse to the prayer of tlie peti
tioners, were next considered. The house

Fatal Explosion.
Chicago, October 10.—A terrible ex
plosion occurred last evening at the Gar
den City Distillery Company’s works.
An experiment was being tried of a new
steaming process. Com was pat whole
into a mammoth kettle sixteen feet high,
and steamed, then a strong pressure of
steam was applied to force it through
pipes into a masli tub. The pipe became
cboked up, stopping tbe passage of the
swollen com, and immensely increasing
tbe pressure on the kettle. A terrific explo
sion followed, blowing the roof of the
building clear off, and killing outright or
burying beneath fallen timber, scalding
com and debris, ten men and one wo
man, whohappened to be in that part of
the distillery. Three, whose bodies have
been recovered, were killed outright-
Four are still buried in the ruins. George
Schaffer has been taken out fatally injur
ed about tlie head. Three othcre are badly
injured.

To Whom it May Concern :
I take pleasure in making the following
statement: I have been afflicted with a
disease of the kidneys for the past two
years and have tried numerous remedies
with only partial and temporary relief:
Warner’s Safe Kidney and Liver Cure
was recommended to me and after tak
ing it tlie pain and distress left me and I
am to-day feeling strong and well. I am
perfectly satisfied that Warner’s Safe
Remedies are the medicines needed and
can cheerfully commend them to others.
G. W. Stamm.
I hereby certify that I have been a pra-
ticing physician for twenty-seven years
and for many chronic cases in my prac
tice do recommend Warner’s Kidney and
Liver Cure. It was upon my advice that
G. W. Stamm, the editor, obtained this
valuable remedy.
