Gates, if Ills statement be true, was robbed in the heart of the city night before la3t, of the sum of one huudred and forty dollars. Gates’statement is that he took a drink in Christian’s saloon, on Gheny street, with two men by the name of Martin and Bailey; that they were together some time, and they finally persueded him to go to a room near at hand, where one of them proposed a game of faro, the apparatus being in the room. He told them he did not play, hut was induced to lend one of them money to play against the other. After he had lost thirty dollars, he reiused to play any more. He had then $110 left in his pocket, which he counted in their presence. They locked arms with him and started towards the Brown House, but on the way down got his money from him and started to run. He caught Bailey who broke loose two or three times and finally called up a negro and handed him some thing. That he, Gate3, suoceeded in get ting his man to the barracks, and after he had been there some time, one of the lieu tenants of the police returned him thirty dollars which Bailey gave up, and ad vised him to drop the matter. He refused to do it, but the police turned the man loose, Mr. Gates brought an advertisement, of fering a reward for the men, into this of fice at dark last evening, and informed us a half hour later that he had been of fered $50 to drop the matter. He said he Would compromise on $75, and later ho returned and withdrew his advertisement. We presume he got his price. We know nothing of the facts in the case other than those given by Mr. Gates. lie had just sold his cotton, hence his pos session of the funds. A MACON ENTERPRISE. Boxes for tbe Thousands. Yesterday we took a glance through the establishment of Mr. A. Seifert, on Second street, and were shown his appa ratus for making pasteboard hozes as well as specimens of work turned out. Owing to delay in shipment of pasteboard the full force of hands were not at work. There are orders on hand for boxes that will require the constant attention of ten or twelve hands for tbrcejnontlis to fill. The house will manufacture any shape, style or species of box used in business. Just give them a copy, and they will turn out anything desired. We like the idea of employing girls in this work. There are but few trades open to women by which they can make a living, and as this is one that requires deft finger? only, there is no reason why they should not he given the choice of posit ions. This cs tablishment is in chaige of Mr. Seliger, an experienced boxmaker. The printing office, in charge of Mr. Bridges Smith, is crowded with work, one order calling for 300,000 copies of Brew er’s Lung Restorer circulars. Tiio Harmonic Society. The stockholders of the Harmonic So ciety had an enthusiastic meeting last evening, twenty-four shares of stock being represented. After transacting business of minor importance, an election was held for directors for the ensuing year, and the following stockholders were elected: A. G. Butts, W. R. Singleton, R. B. Hall, Chas. Sindall, Virgil Powers, Charles Hcrbst, F. Schoneman, A. E. Boardman, A. L. Wood, L. Merkel, W. T. Johnston. Judge Emory Bert was elected President, Prof. Czunla Musical Director, with Prof. Newman as Chorus Master. Secretary and Treasurer E. D. Irvine. For the coming season the society will present greater attractions than ever before. The hall facilities being far superior to last year, will enable them to perform to greater advantage. %/Jut T 7 JTJFjZ- Porous Plaster. Proprietors. Providence. R- I- A and Case. The Savannah Notes of yesterday con tains the sad story of a young wife, told in a most graphic and interesting manner. Tbe lady was originally from Macon, but attended a ball in Quitman with a young man from South Georgia, and occupied the same apartments afte wards. A marriage grew out of these circumstances, and an unwilling husband found himself in pos session of an unhappy wife. He carried her to Charleston and tried to get her in to a convent, but failed, and finally board ed her out in Savannah until a few days since, when lie announced to her by letter his intention to be rid of her, whereupon she took rooms at the Planters’ Hotel, and swallowed'an ounce of laudanum. By a fortunate discovery and hard labor her life was saved. Ko BUI. The grand jury of Jones county returned “no bill” in the case of the State against Wash Comer, who inflicted the knife wounds upon Charley Bird on election day. Comer himself was shot in the side. Neither combatant has prosecuted the case, but Bird’s recovery is looked for with considerable interest, as few people believe the trouble at an end. Beautiful Photograph*. There are on exhibition at tbe Public Library, seventy-five photographs of cele brated pictures in the Salon of Paris. They were purchased and presented by Mr. Thomas B. Gresham. The “Hamlet and Ophelia” is a study, even as a photo graph, as is also the two faces in an op era box. Woman's Missionary Society. The opening exercises were held on last night in the parlors of the Mulberry Street parsonage, with Mrs. J. B. Cobb in the Chair. Dr. R. n. Rivers, of Eufa’ila, Ala., opened the exercises with prayer. The address of welcome was made by Mrs. T. W. Mangham, and was responded to by Miss Kitty V. Cater, of Perry. After the routine business, a very pleas ant social reunion wa3 indulged in. The following are the delegates who have already arrived. Others are ex pected on this morning’s trains: Delegates iij attendance—Mrs. J. O. Branch, Mrs. R. D. Walker, Mrs. C. H. Carson; Mrs. S. S. Harvey, Dawson; Mrs. L. F. Pardons, Hawkinsville; Mrs. V. F. Bessent, Liberty county; Miss K. V. Cates, Mrs. Dr. Havis, Perry; Mrs. W. H. Talton, Miss Maggie Coleman, Houston county; Miss Ella Brown, Talbot county; Mrs. J. H. Brenham, Fort Valley. The society meets for business this morning at 9 o'clock, at the residence of Mrs. Charles Canning, on Mulberry street. Brilliant Wedding in Cnthbert. CUTlfHERT, Ga., Oct. 21.1880. Editors Telegraph and Messenger: The' silken tic of matrimonial bliss has bedta woven with delicate threads of love, and two hearts now beat in responsive chords to the dulcet notes of true affection. Our city has again lost another belle, taken offtlirough the channel that leads to the hymeneal altar. Miss Blanche Powell, daughter of our wide-awake and enter prising druggist, Dr. T. S. Powell, was united in marriage to Mr. H. A. Hays, of Greenwood, Florida. The ceremony was performed in an im pressive style by Rev. A. S. Hamilton, D. D., in the presence of a large assem blage of friends at the residence of the bride’s father, Wednesday atone p. m. After congratulations, the company par took of a sumptuoushanquet, spread in ex quisite taste. Gaiety ran high and ruled the hour until time for departure, when many eyes were bathed in tears. Miss Powell being a favorite in our social cir cles, Ibe city was loth to witness her de parture, and when the locomotive moved away with our charming attraction to_so ciety, a vacancy was created in our midst which will be difficult to fill. Mr. Hays is an excellent gentleman and quite popu lar with our people. Possessed of polish ed manners and good address, he is de serving of the prize that he has won. C. Good Farming. In Houston county, Mr. Garrett Smith raised last season on eighteen acres ol Imd, nineteen bales of cotton and four hundred bushels of corn. No guano was used. This, we should say, .was good fanning.
