HOVEMBEH.
What are the wild winds saving, •
As they sweep through the slot my sky,
Or moan ’mid leafies* branches,
With a Bound like a human sigh ?
They are telling in mournful whispers
Of tlie beautiful summer dead,'
Ol May aud her faded garlands,
Of June and her roses fled;
Of the shining days of August,
And the sweet September glow,
Of the regally crowned October
With footsteps silent and slow.
They are telling of harvests garnered,
Of ripened and gathered sheaves,
Of empty nests in the forests
And under Ibe homestead eaves.
They are telling of stranded vessels,
And wrecks upon stormy waves,
Of signal-guns on a midnight sea,
Of cruel aud watery graves;
And of leaves that drift in die valleys,
Aud mounds where no grass has grown.
Of beautiful idyls vanished,
And beautiful visions flown.
Of a year with its joys and sorrow
That Time like a sheaf hath bound,
Leaving no fruit for the gleaner
On all the desolate ground.
Ob, wind of the wild November,
A sorrowful voice is tbine—
A requiem of the dying yc»r,
Of the snowy shroud a sign;
And harvest days that aro over,
Win we gathered golden grain,
And links that are broken forever
And lost from Love’s magical chain.
—Mrs. D. il. Jordan, Iiouemary Leaie*.
AGRICULTURAL.
Letter front General Wm 31. Untune,
Pro leu or ol Agriculture. Etc., I'nl
vcrslly of Georgia.
A WORD OF APOLOGY.
Illnes3 and other unavoidable causes
have interrupted my contributions to the
agricultural columns of the TEi.bGitAi'ii
axis Messenger. I hope that, in the
future, nothing will occur to prevent or
delay my weekly talk to the farmers of
Georgia.
THE COMPOST HEAP.
Now that this year’s cotton crop is well
niali gathered, aud we arc beginning to
think how we can raise a larger crop at
less expense next year, a compost heap,
high and broad and long, of proper mate
rials and carefully compounded, demands,
and should receive, our early attention, lie
who has such has a batik which will never
break, which pays a high iutcrest on de
posits, and alter all the deposits have been
drawn onl, leaves the owner richer than
he was before.
Cottou planters nave now a large pile
of cottou seed. Where is that pile:* Is It
under tho window of the gin house, ex
posed to the rain anil sun, so that it may
“rot good,” or is it under shelter until it
shall be convenient to make it a principal
ingredient in tlie compost heap to be luiilt
upas soon as possible for use in March
1881? My advice to cotton planters is to
order from some reliable manufacturer as
many tons of acid pbospliate as will
give one ton of acid to every
two tons of cotton seed. Order and ob
tain this without delay, for the longer the
compost has been made before use the
more thoroughly arc its Ingredients blend
ed, aud the better it is as a fertilizer. A
good article of acid pbospliate will supply
from 12 to 13 ncr cent, of phosphoric
acid. How shall the compost heap be
made ? Dig a pit from two to three feet
• deep, the length and bienltli to be deter
mined by the' amount of materials to be
compounded. Cover the pit with a rough
board shed. This being done, deposit
evenly at the bottom of the pit a layer of
stable manure six incites thick, then a
layer of cotton seed well wetted, of equal
thickness, then sprinkle over the wet
seed add phosphate in the proportion
of one sack (200 pounds) ‘to 14 bushels
of seed, then another layer of stable maj
mire, another of cotton seed, and another
of acid phosphate, until the materials are
exhausted, tlieti sprinkle the heap thickly
with land plaster to prevent any escape of
ammonia, and finally cover the whole
with a heavy coating of wood's earth. The
pile Is then complete and may be left un
til a short time before use, whenit should
be cut down, like a cheese, from top to
bottom, aud - all its parts thoroughly
mixed, sprinkling liberally with the land
plaster as the work of mixing progresses.
The acid phosphate aud the land plaster,
with the labor in making the compost, are
the only expense. The phosphate can he
bought in Uco:gia of the best quality
$25 per ton. One tou of acid for
cyery one hundred and forty bushels of
tot lob Seed is the right quantity. One
barrel of plaster, which costs about $2 50,
is ample for a good-sized heap, contain
ing, say, four hundred and twenty bush
els of seed aud three tons of acid, with
the proper propoition of stable manure.
Any one who raises as many as fourteen
bates of cotton has seed enough -to make
just such a compost hesp as above de
scribed, which will afibrd him eight tons
of first-class manure for com and cotton
at a cost, exclusive of labor, of, say $S0.
I do not count tlie market value of the
cotton seed, as no man in his senses would
think of selling them or doing other than
returning them as its due to the land.
The trouble of hauling olf and distribu
ting this compost is obviously great! r
than that ofstrowirg a finely ground com
mercial mature, but notwithstanding
this, it will pay, and that handsomely.
By the use of just such a compost, applied
at the rote of500 pounds per acre, I made
on very poor land this year, over a bale of
cotton to every acre thus manured,
thoroughly prepared and thoroughly cul
tivated.
Now Is tho time to make the heap.
The older it is when needed for use, tlie
belter it is. With the pit prepared and
the ingredients at hand, two hands will
make u large heap in one day.
FALL PLOWIXO.
I strongly recommend fall plowing of
all stiff clay land intended lor cultivation
next spring. Where the laud Is light and
sandy it is not so necessary, but even
there, where there Is a good coat or grass
or weeds, to plow them under now, so
that they will be rolled Mid turned into
humus lit tho spring, Is beneficial. Clay
lauds turned with a good two-hone Brits*
ly plow when the weather is favorable,
between this time and Christinas, will
amply repay the labor. Indeed, they are
so much more easily prepared for the seed
in spring, and the after-cultivation Is so
much lighter than where the land is not
broken 'until spring, I doubt whether
the total cost of laber is greater, even
were the yield the some in both cases.
* CUKE FOB KPIZOOTY.
As this annoying disease lias again ap
peared among our horses, I copy the fol
lowing from the New York Sun, which
I have tried ‘with good and speedy re
sults:
“Take one pound gum assr/’xtida, mix
In one gallon ol boiling water, stir
tlm mixture constantly uuti! the assafocti-
da is all dissolved. Let the mixture cool.
Strain and give tlie horse half a pint
every three hours. This will relieve the
horse within twelve hours.”
Haifa pound of assafcctida and a half
gallon of water are sufficient to afford the
prescribed number of doses to erne one
horse.

The Britiah Wheat Crop. -
The latest and best estimates of the
British wheat crop, as pul forth hj &n
accredited observer iu the London Times,
says the Sun, give tlie acreage lor the year
ItfSO at 3,070.000 acres, the average yieM
twenty-six bushels, and tlie total crop
just inside of 80,000,000 bushels. Last
year’s crop was 25,000,000 bushels less, or
nearly 65,000,000 bushels; but this year’s
crop is still 15,000,000 bushels less Ilian
the average for the lhst fifteen years. Tlie
average total consumption of Great Britain
is 102,000,000 bushels; so that, when the
amount needed for seed is deducted from
this year’s crop, the quantity to be im
ported to supply consumption will be 120,-
000,000 bushels. The greater part of this
must come from the United States, for it
Is noteworthy that tho decline in the British
wheat crop seems to be permanent. The
limit of the utmost possible production per
acre was long ago reached iu that country,
and that this limit cannot any longer be
profitably maintained, in the face ol
American competition, Is proved by
tho fact that tlie area of wheat lands
in cultivation Is steadily diminishing,
and this year was 500,000 acres less
than the average for the past fifteen
years. These figures reveal the telling ef
fect of American competition. That bas
been so severe and so injurious to the
business and profits of the British farmer
that, In a year of average yield per acre,
he has withdrawn so much land from
wheat cultivation that liis total crop lias
falleu off 13,000,000 bushels. The writer
in the London Tunes notes that while the
average return for wheat per acre, alter
seed had been deducted, was aliout $35.00
for the years 1860 to 1870, it fell to $28.55
in the five years ending with 1879. The
latter figures will not pay expenses under
the Britisn system of cultivation, with
rental added. Our competitjou will in
crease rather than diminish in force for
many years yet, as we have still virgin
soil to bring under tillage and have not
by auy means exhausted the resources of
cheap transportation. This year our
wheat crop was 30,000.000 bushels more
than iu 1870, showing that at least 2,000,-
000 acres had been added to the area in
cultivation.
