One touch there is of raa;ic white,
Surpassing southern mountains snow,
That to far sails the dyinc light
Lends, where the dark ships onwaru „o
Upon the golden highway broad
That leads up to the isle of God.
One touch ol light more magic yet,
Of rarer snow ’neath moon or star,
Where, with her graceful sails all set,
Some happy vessel seen afar,
As if in an enchanted sleep,
Stcere over the tremulous stiver deep.
O ship! O saili far must ye l>o
Ere gleams like that upon yq light,
O’er golden spaces of the sea,
From mysteries of the lucent night;
Such touch comes never t6 the boat
Wherein across the waves we float.
O gleams more magic and divine,
Life’s whitest sail ye still refuse,
And flyiug on before us shine,
Upon some distant bark ye choose,
By night or day, across the spray,
That sail is very far away.
Politics in the Pulpit.
A Hint to FiiEACiiEns.
We commend the following article,
clipped from the Jersey City Argus,to the
careful e'msidcsation of our readers. The
modern custom of many divines to inter
lard their pulpit ministrations with
worldly topics and partisan political al
lusions cannot be sufficiently deprecated.
At the North, we are glad to chronicle
that the habit is mostly confined to tl
“higher law” class of the community,
who set up the opinions of fallible and
erring mortals in opposition to the pre
cepts and rulings of the God of tbo uni
verse.
lu the lato presidential campaign, the
Badical ministry seemed to regard It as
their |ieruliar duty and vocation to aid in
the exaltation of the Republican candi
date, Mr. Garfield. In order to compass
liis election, ail the old and inflammable
issues of the war were revived, and the
bloody shirt was displayed with every
sanguine horror ie:inted and intensified.
This pandering to depraved and vitiated
tastes, while it might have been a capital
electioneering ruse, was fatal to the life
and progress of true religion. Happily,
so far, at the South no such travesty upon
piety and holy things has been counten
anced. And we trust the day is remote
indeed when the potsherds of earth will
bo aliowed to prostitute the sacred pre
cincts of God’s tabernacle with the vile
utterances of the forum and hustings.
in regard to the “sale of pews,” how
ever, ne take issue with our contempo
rary. This method of supporting a stated
ministry is to be commended, because it
enlists the personal interest of the wor-
ship(>cr, in the exercises of the sanctuary,
and gives him, as it were, a vested rigid
to In; there. So to speak, haring taken
and paid for ids pew, there is an addi
tional inducement for its regular occupa
tion, au<l thus he and his family aye
brought under the direct influence of the
pastor’s teachings.
Every provision in the way of free seats,
however, should he made for the visiting
stranger, and tlic poor and needy of the
church. The gospel of Christ is free,
ami should be dispensed without money
ami w ithout price.
Forbearing further comment, however,
we present the article referred to, as fol

A IIIST TO PKEACIIKR9.
During the campaign several religious
conventions were held, at which the irre
ligious spirit of the ago was largely dis
closed, and several ministers styled it in
fidelity. They were strong. There are
very few men—indeed, it may bo doubted
if there is one man—who really doubts
Ibc existence of a .Supreme Being. But a
man may believe in God and yet be irre
ligious. His irreligion may result from va
rious causes. He may not believe in a fu
ture existence, or lie may not believe hi
a future system of rewards and punish
ment.
But if the ministers of the present day
wisli to Urn! a serious and prolific cause
of the irreligion that meets them on cveiy
hand and secius to bid defiance to their
attempt to overcome it, they must look
to themselves. Too many of them are
not in earnest. They make a business of
their religion, precisely as other men
make a business of something else. They
lay up their treasures iu banks and stocks
and real c-state rather than in Heaven.
They serve God and mammon—or rather
they try to,and only succeed in proviugthe
correctness of the scriptcre, which says no
man can serve both.
But there is auolher and still more seri
ous cause for the irreligion of the age, and
that is the fact that a large proportion of
the ministers of the United States devote
a large share of their lime and the so-
cailcd religious services of their
churches in politics. Of course
no minister can preach politics
from a strictly neutral standpoint-lie
must lean to one side or the other—and
no man can be expected to go to church
to hear his own political opinions or Lis
favorite candidates denounced.
Naturally enough be declines to do this
and he drifts away from the church. That
a minister identifies himself with either
side does not make that cause any better.
It only belittles his religion and smirches
it as well. During the recent campaign
it is certain that mauy thousands of polit
ical sermons were preached. And they
were all Garfield sermons. If any minis
ter had preached a Hancock sermon he
would have been denounced from Maine
to California for his illegal sacrilege, and
the country would have been deluged
with pamphlets warning the Atne r: -.an
people upon the great dangers of the jnion
or the church and State. But so long
as they were Garfield sermons it was all
right.
And yet when a Christian ministergoo
into his pulpit and laud3 a man who,
whether he accepted a bribe or honestly
thought he was borrowing money, certain
ly swore to what was not the truth,
knowing that he was swearing falsely
when ho did it—when a minister does
this he gives the world reason to believe
tliat there must be something wrong with
lus principles, and the result is irreligion
makes great strides in the community.
The claim that was set tip In one conven
tion that people do not go to church be
cause of the system of renting pews,
which practically excludes the poor, is
very good as far os it goes.
The pew renting system and the plan of
selling pews at auction, which obtains iu
so many places, doubtless deters a great
mauy poor people from going to church.
Butitdoesuotiicccstariiymake them irre
ligious. It only, by depriving them of re
ligious teachings, paves the way to irre
ligion and sets their children on lliat road
at a very early period. Naturally man
kind are prone ,'o religious worship of
some kind. Ev< u the lowest types of
mankind have some sort of religious de
votion, and where they have no knowl
edge of God, worship a being of their own
creation. This being the case,
it may be assumed that the majority
of people would go to church if they
<■• i •!. Suppose Hie people whose duty it
is—a self-imposed duty, but still a duly—
to induce people to attend church, try the
free church principle, give the poor an
equal chance with the rich, and also, give
them religion pure and undefiled as is
found in the New Testament. If they do
this and the people still stay away from
church there will be nono to blame but
themselves. Even then there will be ir
religious people left, but the Christian
"uiimunities and associations will receive
thousands of recruits, and the world and
the people in it will be the bettef for it.

An Old Hap at the I'ubllc Library
Day before yesterday the Macon Public
Library and Historical Association re
ceived from Mr. W. M. McAfee, the pro
prietor of the hotel at Smithvillc, a map
ofthe State of Georgia in 1818. The map ICHFi ••
is a gift to the association through Capt.
A. O. Bacon. The donor is one of the
most popular hosts iu Georgia, widely
known and celebrated for his excellent
hotel and cuisine, lie is probably tie
only landlord in the United States v.Lo
furnishes a meal for half u dollar and sets
out free wine for his guests. His dona
tion is a valuable historical relic, and to
the student who is interested in his State
and its history, is especially interesting.
It was published from actual surveys by
Daniel Snitges.
A glance at the maps of 1818 and 1870
shows a wonderful chauge during the
fifty-eight years that have elapsed since
the first was published. Then there ex
isted but thirty-nine counties—Franklin,
Jackson, Madison, Elbert, Clarke, Ogle
thorpe, Wilkes, Lincoln, Morgan, Greene,
Jasper, Putnam, Hancock, Warren, Jones,
Columbia, Baldwin, Twiggs, Wilkinson,
Washington, Jefferson, Richmond, Burke,
Pulaski, Laurens, Emanuel, Scriven, Tel
fair, Montgomery, Tattnal, Bullock, Ef
fingham, McIntosh, Liberty, Bryan, Chat
ham, Camden, Wayne, and Glynu. Now
there 137. Several ofthe counties named
have been divided, Bibb iteeif being a part
of Jones, the balance being taken from
what was then the Creek’s reservation.
