Garfield’s Sharp Dealing with
the Stalwarts.—The Baltimore Sim
says General Garfield has made the di
rect offer of the secretaiyshlp of war to
Don Cameron, and the offer has been de
clined with thanks.
William F. Dalkymi*lis of the fa
mous grain farm in Dakota, says that the
clear profit for 1880 was over $280,000,
. He raised mon ttt
els of wheat on 24,000 acres, and disposed
of it in BuQalo at a profit of fifty cents a
bushel.
A betrothed couple at Fairfield,
lows, had a quarrel, and broke their en
gagement. Both attempted suicide the
same night, but their lives were saved.
On the following day, convinced that they
did not desire to live apart, they had a
minister to unite them.
A preacher in Rock county, Kansas,
had for weeks been conducting a wonder
fully successful revival. “Dear brethren
and sisters,” he said one day, “this is the
last meeting I shall hold. It is Impossi
ble to keep up a fervor on corn bread and
and molasses for myself and an ear of corn
a day for my horse. God bless yoj.”
The life of a submarine telegraph ca
ble is shown by experience to be from ten
to twelve years. If a cable breaks in
deep water after it is ten years of age it
cannot be lifted far repairs, as it will
break of its own weight—a fatal difficulty,
and for which there seems to be no reme
dy.
A man atBellaire, Ohio, kicked his
daughter’s lover out of doors. His wife
was indignant, because she liked the
young man, and her resentment grew from
day to day Instead of diminishing. At
the end of a week she put some lye m a
pan of boiling water and poured it over
her husbands head as be lay on a lounge.
His eyesight was destroyed and his face
burned.
A frightened farmer at Corydon,
Indiana, burled $2,000 at the time of the
rebel Morgan's raid. The treasure was in
gold and treasury notes, and was placed
in an iron kettle. The owner dug down
to it repeatedly to see if it was safe, but
until quite recently could not muster
courage to take it out and deposit it in
a bank. He bad lost seventeen years’ in
terest by his caution.
The Siege of Lima.—Advices from
Valparaiso, December 24tb, are as fol
lows: The Chilians operating against
Lima comprise 22j>00 infantry, 800 caval
ry and 2,400 artillery, with 80 cannon and
10 Gatling guns—in all about 30,000 men.
The defenders of the city number 40,000.
In consequence of the order of the Chil
ian government Punta-a-Arena is being
strongly fortified in view of Argentine
armaments.
Grant More Than First.—General
Grant was serenaded at Albany
Tuesday eveniag, January 18, 1881. On
that occasion Governor Cornell said: “My
fellow citizens, you have come here to
night to do honor to one who, more than
Washington, was ‘first in war, first in
peace, and first in the hearts of his coun
trymen,’ the illustrious soldier, statesman,
and citizen.” To he above the first may
be possible to Radical balderdash, but it is
not consistent with sense or fact.
Robert Smith, a North Carolina far
mer who had been annoyed by thieves,
shot and killed a man who entered bis
orchard. The intruder proved to be au
honest stranger, with no intent to steal.
Smith was convicted of murder in the first
degree, and sentenced to be hanged. His
neighbors sympathized with him, and,
failing to get executive clemency, forcibly
released him from j&il, and sent him se
cretly out of the State.
Freeman Z. Wray, a boy employed
as a herder in Colorado, was all alone
when attacked by a band of Indians who
meant to capture his cattle. He hastily
built a fortification in his wagon with
bags of Hour and beans, bat not before be
had received three ballets in his body. He
was able to use bis rifle, however, and
with it be drove off the savages. After en
joying a few days of triumph at Denver
as a hero, one of his wounds proved un
expectedly fatal.
Shifting About.—The New York
committee of the world’s fair have changed
their minds again. They liavo not act
ually rescinded their resolution to abandon
In wood as the site for the exhibition, but
hold tho matter in abeyance until they
can procure the necessary legislation at
Washington to change Inwood for the ad
joining tract of land known as Fort
Washington. The latter, it is said, gives
a belter and deeper water front, and offers
superioradvantages for sewerage and drain
age, as wcILos for railway transportation
and the handling of merchandise.
TnE UeralU paragraphist says Senator
Joe Brown, of Geoigia, tho wealthiest
man of Ills State, dresses liko a Methodist
minister. His upper lip is shaved, but he
wears a long white beard. He has Just
purchased a dress suit for social occasions.
The swallowtail coat is as big as an over
coat and is made from heavy heaver cloth.
He says that if society demands that he
shall wear a coat cut like a goose quill he
is going to have it heavy enough to keep
out the cold, even if it does bag in tjie

down.

The squirrels are laying up their winter

A LES80NIN COOKERY, JCilOW
Experience af a Faahlonatile Young
Wonsnn la the Kitchen
Detroit Prt
Miss Cicely Jones is just home from
boarding school and engaged to be married,
and, as she knows nothing about cooking
or housework, Is going to take a lew.
lessons In the culinary art to fit her for tho '
new station in life which she is expected
to adorn with housewifely grace. She cer
tainly makes a charming picture as site
stands m the kitehen door, draped in a
chintz apron, prettily trimmed with hows
of ribbon, her bangs hidden under u
Dolly Varden cap and her dimpled white
hands encased in old kid gloves, while she
sways to and fro on her dainty French kid
heels, like some graceful wind-blown
flower.
“Mamma,” she lisped, prettily, “please
intr duce me to your assistant.-’
Whereupon mamma says: “ Bridget,
this is your young lady, Hiss Cicely, who
wants to learn the name and use of ev
erything in tho kitchen and how to make
cocoanut rusks and augels’ food be
fore she goes to housekeeping for her
self.”
Bridget gives a snort of disfavor, hut,
as she looks at tho young lady, relents aud
says, “I’ll tbroy.”
“And now, Bridget, dear,” says Miss
Cicely, when they are alone, “tell me ev
erything. You see, I don’t know anything
except what they did at school, and isn't
this old kitchen lovely? What makes
this celling such a beautiful bronze color,
Bridget?”
“Shmoke,” answered Bridget shortly,
“and me ould eyes are put out with that
same.”
“Scbmokc—I must remember that, aud
Bridget, what are those shiny things on
the wall?”
“Klvers—tin Rivers for the pots aud
kettles.”
“Kivers?—oh, yes, I must look for the
derivation of that word. Bridget, wlmt
are those round things in that basket ?”
‘•Praties I (For tbe Lord’s sake, where
hezyo lived nlvir to hear of praties?)
Why, them’s the principal mate oflrela’xt
where I kim from.”
“Oh, but we have corrupted the name
into potatoes; such a shame not to keep
the idiom of a language. Bridget—do you
mind if I call you Bridget?—it is more
euphonious and modernizes the old classic
apeliatiou. What is this liquid in the jim
here?”
“Ocb, murder! Where wuz yez raised ?
That’s miilick, fresh from the cow.”
“Mi-I-I-ick, that Is the vernacular, I
suppose, of milk, and that thick, yellow
“Is cream. (Lord, such ignorance).”
“Crame ! Now. Biddie, dear, I must
get to work. I’m going to make a cake
all out of my own head for Henry—lie’s
my lover, Biddie—to eat when he comes
to-night.”
Bridget (aside)—“It’s dead he is, sure
thin, if he a tea it.”
“I’ve got it all down here, Biddie, on
my tablet: A pound of butter, twenty
eggs, two pounds sugar, milk, salt to
your taste. No, that’s a mistake. Oil,
here it is. Now, Biddie, tho eggs first.
It says to beat them well, but won't that
break the shells ? ”
“Well, I’d break thim this time if i
were you, Miss Cicely; they might uot set
well on Mister Henry’s stnmniacli ef yc
didn’t,” said Bridget, pleasantly.
“Oh, I suppose tbe shells are used sepa
rately. There! I’ve broken all the eegs
into the flour. I don’t think I’ll use the
shells, Biddie; give them to some poor
people. Now, what next? Oh, I’m so
tired! Isn’t housework dreadful hard?
But I’m glad I’ve learned to make cake.
Now, what shall I do next, Biddie ?”
“Excuse me, Miss Cicely; but you
moight give it to the pigs. It’s meself
can’t see any other uss for It,” said Bridget
ernstiiy. v
“rigs! Oh, Biddie! yon don't mean to
say that you have some dear, cunning
little white pigs! Oh, do bring the little
darlings in and let me feed them. 1 am
just dying to have one tor a pet. I saw
some Canton-flannel ones once at a fair,
and they were too awfully sweet for any-
thing.”
Just then the bell rang, and Bridget re
tained to aunounco Mr. Henry, and Cice
ly told Bridget she would take another
lesson the next day, and then she went
up-stairs iu her chintz apron and mob cap,
with a little daub of flower on her tip-
lifted nose, and told Henry she was learn
ing to cook, and-he told her she must uot
get overheated or worried out, for lie
didn’t care whether she could cook or
not; he should never want to eat when he
could talk to her, and It was only sordid
souti that caied for cooking.
And meanwhile poor Bridget was just
•lamming things in the kitchen and talk
ing to herself in her own sweet idiom
about “idgiu turning things upside down
for her inconveniencing.”
