Chin Music.
Tlie agreement in result of phienoJojl-
cal and'physiognomical observations is
tienueutly urged as proof of their value.
Vor instance, tlio law in physiognomy
that length of featuro Indicates activity
>11.1 intensity, breadth, latent force and
endurance, applies equally well to the
phrenological organs. Womens fea
tures and phrenological organs
are, as a rule, longer than
those of men, and of the two sexes,
the thoughts an.l actions of women are the
mote rapid and intense. Coming to the
particular feature, the chin, the seat of
aina'lvcness iu physiognomy, we And that
almost everything that can be deduced
from its length, breadth and general puy-
Icai d. veiopment can be inferred
from siiu lar characteristics of the
ceietiellum, the organ of amalivcness in
phrenology. ! diols, for instance, are deU-
cieat in both; both are exceedingly prom
inent in proliilc races—the Germans, the
Scotch and the Irish. IVliercas the North
American Indians, whose families are
generally small, have the chin and cere
bellum hut moderately developed. A
marked anterior projection of the chin
and posterior projection of the cerebellum
are signs of iutense amativeness, and they
testify to I lie passionate characters of the
Empress Catherine II, of Kussia, and
Aaron Burr.
Mind Reading by a Girl of Eleven
Years.
The performances of a Boston girl, aged
eleven years, whose husband, if she ever
gets one, is to be commiserated, are tints
related by the Herald, of that city: She
had dai k latir aud eyes, a decidedly ner
vous tenqierainciit. She was blindfolded,
and the tliiuibie was placed on tire top of
an upright piano on the other side of the
room from where she stood. The gentle
man of the house and ono of the children
tli.-n placed their bauds on her shoulders,
aud fixing their iniuds on the thimble, site
was told to proceed. Turning squarely
around, she walked directly to the piano,
felt tier way till tile corner was reached,
then lilting her hand as lugh
as she could reach, she
placed her hand on the thiiu-
ble. The performance caused sur
prise, ami elicited a round of applause,
•file child was taken to the other side of
the loom aud blindtoJded again, :hc work
being secuiely done. This time tlie thim
ble was placed on the piano stool, much
lower thaii before. The same persons
placed their hands on the child’s sboul-
deis, and again she turned squarely
around and walked straight to where the
stool was standing. As she approached
site put out her bauds, reaching not up as
before, but down, and felt her way cau
tiously. in this altitude she walked up
to tlie stool, aud while in the act of pass
ing her hand over the top, jarred the stool
ami knocked the thimble on the floor. The
third tune the thimble was placed in a
dilf. r. nt part of the room on the hinge of
a folding d.sir, about five feet from
the lloor. It was not in a place easily
discovered liy a person with his eyes
open. Tlie bliudfolded child, with the
hands of the other persons on her shoul
ders, walked straight to the spot, and,
after feeling on both sides of tlie door for
a few uioweiiUi, passed her baud along up
tlie edge uutil she struck the thimble,
which fell to tlie fioor. She declined to
pei form any more, saying she was tired.
When asked how she knew where the
thimble was, she said site could uot tell.
It was impossible for her to see, and no
one suspected for a moment that she was
playing a trick. It seemed to be a clear
case of “miud-readiug,” the exhibition
bei: g tlie same in kind, if not iu degree,
as those given by Brown a few years ago.
Unsuccessful Writers.
Tlie New York Keening Pont has an
article on the complaints of the authors
of rejected manuscripts, w hich complaints,
it adds, amount to this, that in the opin
ion of the authors of manuscripts which
the editors do not want, those manuscripts
are I letter than the ones which are accept
ed, ami that there are many of the un
successful writers who need tlie inotiey
which their writings would bring them if
they were accepted. The Post contin
ues:
“In both of its heads this complaint is,
of course, ridiculous, because iu both it
.overlooks tlie most important fact con
nected with literary work—the fact, name
ly, tiiat whatever degree of sentiment
there may be in tlie minds of the writers
witli respect to their work, tlie sale and
publication of literary wares is as stricti'y
a commercial matter as tlie sale of soap Is.
Every competent magazine editor knows
whether or uot an article is likely to help
the sale of ids magazine, and governs
himself accordingly in every case. To
suppose that he is guided by other rules is
to suppose that he is a fool. lie cannot
buy articles merely because their authors
uccd the money, any more than he can go
about buying dry goods which he docs not
need, merely because, their owners wish
to sell them. This matter ought to be
plainly understood by the persons who
now misun.leptaml it to their own sor
row. They ought to learn that if they
can write what the public wants to read,
there will be a market for their wares,
while if they cannot do this, however ex
cellent their literary productions may be,
they would do better to abandon the
business for which they arc unfit, and seek
work of some other kind. No man
cau afford to publish a newspaper or a
magazine ‘for the fun of the thing,’ and no
publisher of newspaper or magazine cau
ailord to purchase any manuscript which
ho does not want.
“The mistake In this case is the same as
that which is made in many others. The
persons who complain persistently regard
their cases as isolated or nearly isolated
ones, which might be dealt with by a
little generosity. In fact, however, every
magazine editor picks the articles which
he uses out of five or six or ten times their
number, aud if every article sent to him
was thoroughly good he must nevertheless
return the greater part of them, simply for
watit of space in which to priut them.”
Wealth of tub Old Nortu State.
North Carolina, like Virginia, lies in ter
raced slopes, from the highest ranges of
the’Appalachian chain to the salt marshes
of the seacoast, and is also, like the neigh
boring State, usually divided into belts of
the same name—Tidewater, the Middle
Country, Piedmont, and the Bine Ridge.
Iu geology aud productions, the bells cor
respond witli those in Virginia, but the
climate of North Carolina ranges about
ten degrees higher at any given altitude.
There has always been a popular belief in
the North that this State was poor In nat

One morning last summer, after the
eralogists of late years mako pilgrimages
to her mountains as to a treasure-house of
riches, and shrewd Northern capitalists
since 1874 haze been investing largely in
her timber and mineral lands. In tlia
Blue Ridge belt there are stores of gold,
silver, iron, copper and inarblo which,
Prof. King reports, “seem limitless;”
while l’rof. Overman declares that the
gold mines iu this district, under proper
management, wonld yield more than those
of California. Toe Catawba grape is a
native of this section, and a hundred oth
er varieties of native grapes have been
found, many of them superior to the Ca
tawba. There are iu the highlands no
potato bugs, mosquitoes, or chinckbags;

The Haughty but Mice Church Choir.
From Ptek's Snn J
You may organize a church choir and
think you have got It down fine, and that
every member of it is pious and full of
true goodness, and in such a moment as
you think not, you will find that one or
more of them is full of the old Harry, and
and it will break out when you least ex
pect it. There is no more beautiful sight
to the student of nature than a church
choir. To sue the members sitting to
gether, demure, devoted and pious-look
ing, you think that there is never a thought
enters their mind that is not connected
with siDging anthems, but sometimes you
get left. There is one church choir in
Milwaukee that is about as near perfect
as a choir cau be. It baa been organized
for a long time, and never lias quarreled,
and the congregation swear by It. When
the choir strikes a devotional attitude it is
enough to make an ordinary Christian
think of tlie angel band above, only the
male singers wear whiskers, and the fe
males wear fashionable clothes.
. soprano
brought a chunk of shoemaker’s wax to
church. The tenor was arrayed like Sol
omon, in all bis glory, with white pants
aud Seymour coat. The tenor got up to
see who tlie girl was that came in with
tbe old lady, and while lie was up tbe so
prano put ’.lie shoemaker’s wax on the
chair aud the tenor sat dewu on it. They
all saw it, and they waited for the result.
It was an awful long prayer, and the
church was hot, the t<- nr was no iceberg
himself, and shoemai: '» wax melts at 93
degrees Fahrenheit. <fh® Minister finally
got to o«neii, read a hymn, tlie choir
coughed aud all rose «p. Tlie chair that
the tenor was in stuck to him lik; a broth
er, aud came right along aud nearly broke
his suspenders- It was the tenor to
bat, arid as the great organ struck
up be pushed the chair off of bis person,
looked around to see if he had saved his
pants, and began to sing, aud tlie rest of
tbe choir came near bursting. The tenor
was called out on three strikes by the um
pire, aud the alto bad to sail in, and
while stie was singing the tenor began to
feel of the first base to see v/liat was tlie
matter. When he got his hand en the
shoemaker’s warm wax his heart smote
him and ho looked daggers at the sopra
no, but she put on a pious look and got
her month ready to sing “Hold the Fort.’*
Well, the tenor sat down on a white hand
kerchief, before he went home, and lie
got home without anybody seeing him,
and be has been, as the saying is, “lay
ing” for the 6oprauo ever since to get
even.
It is customary in all first-class choirs
for tlie male singers to furnish candy for
the lady singers, and the other day the
tenor went to a candy factory aud had a
peppermint lozenger made with about a
teaspoonful of cayenne pepper in tlie cen
ter of ft. On Christinas he took his loz
enger to the church aud concluded to get
even with the soprano if he died for it.
Candy had been passed around, and just
before the hymn was given out in which
tlie soprauo was to sing a solo, “Nearer
My God to Thee,” the wicked wretch
gave her the loaded lozenger. She put ft
iu her mouth and nibbled off the edges,
and was rolling it as a sweet morsel under
her tongue when the organ struck up and
they all arose. While the choir wa3
skirmishing on tlie first of tho verse
and getting scored up for the solo,
she chewed what was left of the candy
and swallowed iu Well, if a Democratic
torchlight procession bad marched unbid
den down her throat she couldn’t have
been any more astonished. She leaned
over to pick up her handkerchief and spit
tbe candy out, but there was enough pep
per left around tlie slielvoge.of her mouth
to have pickled a peck of chow-chow. It
was her tnrn to sing, and she rose and
look the book, her eyes filled with tears,
her voice trembling, her face was as red as
a spanked lobster, aud tlie way she sang
that old hymn was a caution. With a
sweet tremolo she sang “Nearer, my God,
to Thee,” aud the congregation was al
most melted to tears. As she stopped,
while tlie organist got in a little work, she
turned her head, opened her mouth aud
blew out her breath with a “whoosh”
to cool her mouth. Tho audience saw
her wipe a tear away, but did not
hear tlie sound of her voice as site
“whooshed.” She wiped out some of she
pepper with her handkerchief aud sang
tlie oilier verses with a good deal of fer
vor, aud tlie clioir sat down, all of the
members looking at the s-prano. She call
ed for water. The noble tenor went and
got it for her, and after she had drank a
couple of quarts she whispered to him,
“Young man, I will get even with you
for that peppermint caudy if I live a thou
sand years, and don’t you forget it,” and
they all sat down and looked pious, while
tlie minister preached a most beautiful
sermon on “Faith.” We expect that tenor
will be blowed through tlie roof some
Sunday morning and the congregation
will wonder What he Is in such a hurry
for.
