t«f|lni J —'* Xew Orleans Banquet
from the Loulnilte Journal.
Some years ago when John McCullough
was in Xew Orleans a comDlimentary
dinner was given him, to which Robson
and Crane, the comedians, were invited.
Robson tells tlie following story of an in
cident which occurred:
**lt whs 31 private allair, so Chat when I
saw sitting between Craue and myself, a
” J seedy looking old gentleman, my at
tention was arrested, and I began to eye
the old ebap with suspicion. liy and by
lie began to attract the attention of tlio
company. Uc was a man of, say sixty or
thereabout, unshaven and very shabbily
d-i ^sed. The night outside was bittetly
cold, and yet the old fellow wore a thin
summer coat buttoned up to the throat.
What first drew my attention to him
was his appearance, and after that his ap
petite. He ate voraciously, and lffs drink
ing kept pace with Ids eating. Again and
»<4in did Crano and I replenish his plate
»fid fill his glass, and again and again
wero they emptied. X confess that a bar-
b&rout s*jus«5 of the humor of the tiling
ciine over me, and I gave way to it. From
my‘pride of place’ I deliberately piled
the ancient marine with wine, and made
a point of inviting the attention of the
whole table to him. They all went into
the joke, and insisted, one after another,
upon driuking wine witii the old man.
The idea, of course, was to get him tipsy,
but we all failed, for the old
gentleman lud a head as hard as Soc
rates, and moreover, seemed to know
when he had enough. The
quiet whisper and uudge was going round
the festive hoard. ‘Who’s our friend?
Who brought him In?’etc. But it was
quickly suppressed, for at last, with quiet
,nty but firm courtesy, fie declined to
dtink any more, and tio entreaty could
move ids resolution. None of our party
itemed tokuow him, so we concluded that
he was a poor acquaintance of some of the
givers of the banquet, who had quietly
run him in for a good feed. Iu the mean
time speeches were made, toasts were
drank, and a slightly inebriated individ
ual sung out, ‘Say, mine ancient frieud,
won't you please give us a speech ? Some
thing about Sbakspeare, you know—lie’s
the fellow.’
“Nobody, of course, imagined that tho
old man would have the nerve to get up
and say anything, but ho did. Well, sir,
in the course of my experience I have
heard a great many clever people talk
about tho immortal bard, but on this oc
casion 1 heard in fifteen minutes the most
intelligent exposition of Shakespeare’s
genius that it lias ever been my fortune to
listen to. And tint whole thing was done
to easily, and with such an entire absence
of effort, that it was not until he had fin
ished that we all began to realize that we
Lad been under the spell of a profound
critic and au accomplished or
ator. Aud those who came to
scoff remained to ptay. John
McCuilougli rushed over and grasped his
hand enthusiastically, thanked him for
the honor of his presence, aud begged his
name that the company might know to
whom they were indebted. For the first
t*me the old man seemed to lose his self-
possession. He articulated a few words,
but it was plaiu his emotions were getting
tie better of him. Craue filled him up a
glan of wine, and tho old man drank it,
ami. alter a little pause, rose slowly and
with difficulty. Ills manner had been
changed, lie no longer looked the keen
critic and fluent orator, but a weak, in
firm old man, who,in spite of every disad
vantage of appearance, still retained a
certain dignity—an elusive but unmis
takable something that pronounced him
to be a gentleman.
“Said a friend to me as the old roan got
upon his feet, ‘Bob, this don’t look like
art; this is nature.’ ‘Gentlemen,’ said
<i« unknown in a voice tremulous aud
i ill of pathos, >1 owe an apology to you
ill. 1 have no excuse to oiler for havfug
landed upon your festivity, but 1 can at
>111 make tbe amend of confessing that
1 am no intruder. 1 came to this house
th.s evening on tbe invitation of a man I
once knew, and I stumbled by accident
into your banquet. I came here hungry
anl cold, (and I thought I could hear the
wind whittling outside as he intoned
inker than pronounced the words ‘l/ungry
: ol cold*) and I could not reaisClhe letup-
i cion. 1 wanted to eat and drink and
g.twarm.’ z'iZ
“And tl.c old man’s eyes dropped on the
tibls as if overpowered with a sense of
his degradation.
“‘I know this is shameful,’ he con
tinued, ‘but physical weakness sometimes
begets m-ntal weakness, aud I have eaten
t Khing for three days. For three weeks
past I have not slept in a bed, but stolen
a rest iu doorways, or in a chair in the
office of some hotel. Sometimes I have
v.’.ked the streets till daylight. Such
tbiugs, gentlemen, toll heavily upon a
nan of u.y age. Otherwise no man with
i remnant of pride left could have acted
ts 1 lav, done to-night. But I thank God
I Lave at least retaiued courage enough
to tell the truth. And now, gentlemen,’
said the brave old man, straightening up
with wonderful dignity of manner, ‘accept
my gra'ituJo for what I have received. I
have ea'.,*n aud drank with you, and am
• •• and grateful. I trust you will
pari.au iny infringement of hospitality
and common honesty and permit me to
depart.”’
Xhe il:uuer party immediately raised a
r u;ie “j $ds for their needy friend. Rob-

SALEM ACADEMY
Salem, X. C,
THIS institution commends itself to the
publio as a notably pleasant and safe home
and high-class school for girls and yotwj
women.
It hasduring the past few years bees
greatly improved. Its Scholastic Arrange
ments have been remodeled and its stand
ards advanced. It now oilers all .the ad
vantages of similar institutions of the high
est grade. A large number of instructors
is employed, and painstaking instruction is
S guaranteed. It offers a liberal English, or
lish and classical course for graduation
under its new administration, bas al-
y graduated (with diploma) four very
promising classes.
The Domestic Arrangements of the Acad
emy have latterly been readapted to secure
to its resident pupils the largest measure
of comfort nnd convenience. Eight resi
dent teachers are continually in charge nnd
give special attention to the cultivation of
correct manners and habits in growing
girls. Systematic and enlightened physi
cal cultnro and care of health are promi
nent features in the improvements recently
perfected.
Exceptional facilities are oiferod for tho
study of Music. The results of practical
work in its Mo3ie Department, during the
past few years, would warrant the Acade
my, in the judgment of competent critics,
in inviting comparison with any other sim
ilar institution in the South. A two to
three years’ Graduating Course (with di
ploma) has quite recently been introduced.
Special attention is directed to the ad
vantages now also obtainable in tli&Do-
K rtment of Drawing and Fainting, which
s been reorganized and placed iu charge
of a lady of special ability and superior
training. A high standard of excellence
will bo maintained and the best methods
observed. A variety of branches of study
is offered nnd cnrefnl tuition is guaranteed.
