Once a moose, a frog and a tittle red hen
Together kept a house;
The fro* was the laziest of frogs,
And lazier still was the mouse.
The work all fell on the little red hen,
Who had to (ret the wood
\nd build the fires and scrub and cook,
And sometimes hunt the food.
One day as she went scratching around
She found a ha* of rye;
Said she, “Now, who will mako some
bread 7” , rt _
Said the lazy moose, “Not I!”
“Nor IP* croaked the frog, os he dozed in
the shade.
The red hen made no reply,
Bnt flew around with a bowl and spoon,
And mixed and stirred the rye.
•‘■Who’ll make the fire to bake the
bread ?" „ _
Said the mouse again, “Not I!
And scarcely oi>ening his sleepy eyes
Frog made tho same reply*
The little red hen said never a word,
Bnt n roaring fire she made;
And. while the bread was baking brown,
‘•Who'll set the table ?” she said.
“Not I!" said the sleepy frog, with a yawn;
"Nor 11” said the mouse again.
So the table eho set, nnd the bread pot on—
“Who’ll eat this bread 7” said the hen.
‘•I will!” said the frog.. “And I!” squeak
ed the mouse.
As they near the table drew.
“Not much you won’t1” said tho littlo red
hen, .
And away with jhe loaf * he now.

Louisiana State Lottery Company.
Incorporated in 1868 for 23 years by tho
legislature for Educational and Charita
ble purposes—with n capital of $1,000,000
—to which a reserve fond of over $429,UU0
has since been added.
By an overwhelming popnlnr vote its
franchise was made a part of the present
, - . . State Constitution adopted December 2d,
tion and arrangement of exhibits. Mr. A. D., 1870.
Greenbow was elected n member of the ITS GRAND SINGLE NUMBER Draw-
club. He exhibited the workings of Nash’s
Acme Harrow, and all woro pleased with it.
Mr. White, of Farmington, Ga, one of
the Macon and Brunswick extension sur
veying party died of dysentery at tho resi
dence of Co|. J. W. Myrick, Saturday even-
in® «t 7 o’clock.
The Arm composed of Messrs. Lockett,
Myrick and Bowman are rapidly camp let
ing their contract to build two miles of tho
Atlanta extension, and are now grading
through the lands of Mr. G. M. Davis and
the Messrs. Taylor. Messrs. W. D. Grant
A Co. have nearly completed their grading
through the lands of Messrs. Robert If.
Park and Frank M. Johnson, are finishing
up culverts and are also grading on Dr. L.
Holt's place. They have another party
grading six miles above near Dames’ Ferry.
< lur people are much pleased at the pros
pect of having a station for freight nnd
passengers near the clab rooms nnd fair
grounds and it is proposed to establish a
ferry on tho river between tho farms of
Mr. I. B. English in Jones county and R.
E. Bark in Bibb county near the proposed
depot. Tho crops are a f?ir average.
Evidences ot Grntith.
As evidences of tho continued growth of
:he business of Macon, as well ef it3 ma
terial prosperity generally, it may bo men
tioned the Amount of mail matter is grad
ually increasing at tho rate of one hundred
letters per day, and yet this is on the odgo
of what is properly the busy season.
Another sure indication is the changing
of hands of real estnte. Eligible building
lots, formerly held by persons unable to
sell or non-eaterprising enough to keep
them vacant for years, are now passing
into tho ownership of men who have tho
funds nnd vitn to build. Of course some
of these sales have been effected for purely
speculative purposes, bnt in the majority
of cases were for building np the city and
prompted by the true spirit of enter
prise.
Among tho latest- purchases is that of
the M.irny lot oc Tine street, between
Fine and Oak, bought by Mr. W. A. Hod.
Mrs. John Sheridan has bonght the lot just
opposite, and will soon erect aline two-
story residence thereon. Dr. John Ingalls
has commenced building n residence on
Second street, next to Arthnr Woods, and
numbers of other less pretentions houses
are going up.
The canienters of the city have more
work contracted for tbnn they can possibly
get out, and many improvements of the
city are held in abeyance, as it were, until
the flood of enterprise subsides.
The work on tho Wesloynn will soon
commence in earnest, the contract for the
brick to bo used having been let oat yes
terday. Tho clock on tho coart honso nos
been ordered painted, bnt Air. Burke, the
;a:ntcr, who has tho work in hand, has
wen unable to find time to paint it.
The colored clement are in clover
’.htough tho agency of this boom. Farmers
are paying extraordinary prices for cotton
pickets, and every girl, boy or woman with
•any eucrgy at all are going out of town,
making bonanza-liko wages. The grading
of the extension has taken all tiie adult ne
groes, nnd “strikers” in all trades have
their hands full of work. Truly these evi
dences are convincing, and be who doubts
Macon’s future greatness certainly has a
a.oked gloss in his horoscope.

Tho jetty system of Capt. Eads’ is again
mcer a cloud. Ho has claimed for his
jetty channel in the South pass at tho
taoith of the Mississippi river, that the
depth is nowhere less than 30 feet; that it
is i'J0 feet wide, and that “it ts in reality a
n.ijniflcent natural canal.” Recently tho
i-ailUh steamer Renfrew, drawing only 23
feet of water, struck tho ground in the
charnel in tho sea end of tlie jetties.
Capt. Horn, of the steamship Netley Abbey,
of hnrdiff: Capt. Wnrd, of tho English
bar; Ettie, of Plymouth; Capt. Leathers,
of tie Mississippi steamboat Natchez, and
Cr.pt. Xnybr, of the Gnlf steamer Isabel,
;oia in certifying that tho navigable clian-
tei, nsteud of being nbont 000 feet wide,
t* at points apparently not more than l&J
feet wide. They further oortify that just
above Crane Island they believe it to bo
inpassiblo for two vessels drawing 23 feet
I water to pass each other without one or
r -r both taking the ground. As the jetty
ttporiment of Capt. Eads has cast the
country about five million dollars, its fail
ure would be a rather expensive as well as
aipileusant one.
