tiOlX' Jb'UH THE COWS.
The western skies wero nil a slow
With clouds o’ red and gray;
The crickets in the grassy fields
Were chirpin’merrily,
When op the lane nn’o er the hill
I saw a maiden roam.
Who worn her way at the close o day
To call the cattle homo:
Co-boss—co-bos3!
Co-boss—co-boss!
Como homo—come home!
The echo o’ her charmin’ voice
Resounded thro’ the vale;
It lingered on the evening air;
It floated on the gale;
Twas borno a'ong tho mountain side,
It drifted through the glen;
It died away among tho hills.
Far from the haunts o’ men:
Co-boss—co-boss 1
Co-boss—co-boss!
Come home—como home!
Her face was flashed with hues o’ health,
Her arras an’ feet were bare;
Hho had a lithe an’ active form,
A wealth o’ebon hair.
Beyond tho hill she passed from sight,
Es sinks a failin’star,
Until her voice was faintly heard
Still callin’ from afar:
Co-boss—co-boss!
Co-boss—co-boss!
Come home—como home:
Soon o’er the distant knoll appeared
The cattle red an’ brown,
An’ from the pastur’ to the lane
Cnme gayly trottin’ down.
With sparklin’ eyes and cheeks nglow
Kelurned the maiden gay.
Who waved her arms, and shouted low:
Whay-boss—whay-boss—whey-boss'.
Whay-boss—whay-boss!
Whay-boss—whay-boss!
O Whny-O wbay!

The Host Terrible Experience In the

Three Times—Mwd Survivors Flght-
lag Each Ollier on s Balt-Grateful
to Savannah Pilots
Savannah Xeict
Tho rescue of the captain and five of the
crew of the bark Brunswick, which went
down in the gale forty-five miles north of
Tybee, hy the pilot boat Belle No. 5, Cap
tain Jauius S. Bliss, and their arrival at
Savannah on Taesday night, the 30th ulL,
has bt-cu noted. Wo published recently an
interesting account from Captain Higgins,
the commnnder of the vessel, of his expe
rience. Among tho rescued was James
Fisher, a native of Philadelphia, who
reached his home on Monday night, and
tells the following story in the Phila
delphia Times, which i3 of thrilling inter
est:
Mr. Fisher is a tali, slender man, of
about hfty-five years of age, grizzled und
wrinkled and bowed with the labor of forty
years passed upon the seas. He has made
the circuit of tho globe twenty-threo times,
and lias been wherever a ship could go.
Speaking of the wreck, he said, last
night:
“I have faced death upon tho ocean many
a time, bnt never before under snch terri
ble circumstances. I have been in gaies in
nil parts of tho world, hat I don’t believe
there ever was a blow that could compare
tJthat cyclone. After leaving New Or
leans we sailed for Pascagoula, Mississippi,
and took on n cargo of pitch pine. We left
there on our home voyage August 10, and
had delightful weather nnti! the 15th, when
we experienced a heavy northeast gale.
After that the elemonts were kind to ns un
til the 23d of tho month, when we caught a
violent northeast sqaall, which kept in
creasing in force nntil it culminated in the
disastrous cyclono of the 27th.
“We were about seventy-five miles ofi
Charleston, just a little to the north, per
haps, anil apparently in tho vory vortex of
the cyclone. W’e soon discovered that we
wero admitting water. Our waterways
split at half past five in the morning and
the wind blowing so furiously that you
could not hear a word at a distance of five
feet. Onr skipper, Captain Daniel Hig
gins, a prince among men, and I consulted
ns to what to do. w e decided to throw tho
deck load, comprising some thirty-five
thousand feet of timber, overboard. Well,
over it went. Wo went along better for
awhile, hut only for awliile. The wind
seemed to grow stronger every second.
Tho vessel lay over on her leeside and the
water poured in. At 11 o’clock the lee yard
nrms were dipping and tho vessel was in
danger of capsizing. Wo had to cut down
the masts to keep her from going over. She
righted, but the sea poured over her in tor
rents—a roaring, rushing, irresistible ava
lanche. Our hold was rapidly filling. Wo
felt that tho vessel mostsink.and we threw
over everything thnt wo coaid get rid of, in
the hopo of saving her. In tryiDg to break
tho anchor away, Theodore Shaddock, a
Greek sailor, was swept overboard. I saw
him on the crost of a mighty wave behind
us, ond I thought ho would bo swept back.
He seemed to think so, too, for he called,
out, ‘All rightoe, sir.’ But in n moment af
ter he threw up Ids arms and disappear
ed. Thnt was tho boginning Doath had
come. _ .
“One boat had already been swept away;
tho other and tho forward house went now,
and we wero loft to tho morcy of the waves.
It was every man for himself, and so I told
the men. They blabbered for awhile, of
course; doath’s a terrible* thing when it
comes and laughs right in your face. ‘No
use, men,’ said I; ‘every man's got to go
some time. If any of you can pray, why
pray. Now is the time. Bat don t let ns
he women. Lot us die like mon.’ Six of
us lashed ourselves to tho stump of tho
mizzenmnst, and threo to tho spanker-
boom. Thero wo cowered, tho sea beating
over us, until at last tho cabin broke up,
and the stump of tho mizzenmast
shot up into tho air. IVe disen
gaged ourselves ns rapidly as possible.
Ambrose Monnclli, a Spanish sailor, who
had climbed to tho masthead, was drowned.
The broken mast floated off and the after-
house and the skylight went along with it.
We crawled for our lives to a beam that
served to fasten tho skylight and lashed
ourselves' to that. Tho hull broke up and
the cargo floated up around us, e wero
on nothiug but a raft composed of a part
of the deck. When wo counted heads thero
were but six of us. Tho rest hnd floated off
nnd were drowned, wo scarcely know how.
Wc didn't see or hear them go. It wa3
pitch dark and wc could hear nothing bnt
tho awlul roar of the olementa.
“do weftix lay tlnro all night, fighting tho
sea nnd wreck. Tho cargo and broken tim
ber floated up around us, and we hnd nil
we conld do to keep onr frail raft from be
ing broken to pioccs by it nnd sunk. Tho
wind sont tho scud flying with cutting force
against our faces. Heavy logs forty feet
long wero whipped up nnd twirled around
like shingles. I got just a little tap of ono;
it knocked nil my teeth down ray throat.
In the morning wo banded ourselves to
gether so that the wind could strike ns—
mado a soil of ourselves—and wo slowly
worked ourselves freo from the debris. >\e
had one enemy only to contend with then
—the sea. Tho wind blow nil that dny, and
tho waters poured down upon us. Wo saw
a vessel soino tea miles ofT. but it boio
away from us. We saw another vessel, but
nono of them seemed to sight us. So wo
Tlie Michigan Forest Fires.
Dktboit, September 10 It a: 11s have
fallen in probably sufficient quantities to
quench the fires, but not enough to wet
the ground and revive the drooping vege
tation. The lowest estimate Indicates
that 215 families have been barned out in
the townships of Marietta, Flynn, Argyle,
Moore, Lacoite and Elmer, in Sanilac
county, and thirty-two persons are known
to be dead. Men who traveled through
the burned district yesterday report that
the fire3 are mostly out, and the inhab
itants sitting about the ashes ot their
houses. Many are burned and otherwise
injured. They are disconsolate and at
most bereft of their senses. Provisions,
clothing, bedding and other necessaries
are being constantly forwarded, and men
are traveling through ilie burned section
distributing supplies and taking the names
of those in need. Many persons are still
missing in tho burned district, and the
exact loss cannot be known for some days.
Sixty-five burials are reported in sir
towns, and it is ssid that twenty-seven
dead bodies have been found in the coun
try between Bad-Axe and Port Hope.
Trains are now running regularly to Sand
Beach and Marietta.
A Preacher Convicted of Heresy.
Chicago, September 11 The case of
Dr. Thomas was given to the jury at a
late hour last night, and after brief delib
eration a verdict was returned convicting
him of the charge of disseminating ideas
contrary to the doctrine of the Methodist
religion, as specified in the general indict
ment. The verdict was signed by ail the
members of the jury. The charges being
sustained by this verdict lias the effect of
sending tho case for trial. There was
considerable excitement during the speech
ot Prosecuting Counsel Burkbost last
evening, who made use of the following
words: “There are gray-haiied, godly
men in this city—there arc broken-hearted
mothers in this city, who are weeping
over the ruin of their sons, whose down
fall in theatre-going and dancing and
beer drinking and card playing began
w.tlithoir accepting the views of "Dr.
Thomas.” Tho speaker was loudly
hissed at times, and he retorted sharply on
the audience.
The Liverpool Cotton Comer.
Lqxdov, September 10.—Circulars
have been posted to all the cotton spin
ners and manufacturers ot Blackburn and
thirteen adjacent towns asking wnetlier
they nro willing to stop their spindles for
a week on the condition that two-thirds
of the trade do the same. An answer is
to be returned on Monday so that if the
necessary majority favor the adoption of
this course in order to counteract the
movements of the Liverpool cotton
comer, tho spindles may be stopped for
a week, beginning on next making-up
day, Wednesday or Thursday. It Is now
thought that the canvass of the masters at
Preston and North Lancashire will result
in a two-thirds majority in favor of stop
ping work. It is confidently stated that
a fortnight’s stoppage would completely
extinguish the ring.
It is stated at Chicago that flour is be
ing freighted from that point to New
York at sixteen cents per barrel, or about
seven cents per hundred weight. Little
by little tlie public is learning at what
figures railroads can afford to carry.
