WORDS OR STEXGTH.
Thero arc three lesson* I would write,
Three words ns with a burning pen,
In tracings of eternal light,
Vpon the hearts of men.
Haro hope. Though clouds environ now,
And gladrejs hides her face in scorn
Pnt thou the shadow from thy brow—
No night but hath its morn.
Haro faith. Where’er they bark i3 driven,
The calm’s disport,tho tempest’* mirth—
K*nw this—God rates the hosts of heaven*
Tha inhabitants on earth.
Haro love. Not love alone for one,
Bu‘ man as man, thy brother call,
And scatter like the circling sun,
Thy charities on all.
Thus grave these lessons on thy apnl,
Hope, Faith and Love, and thou thalt

WAsnikoToy, September 21.—A duel
jotween District Attorney Lewis and
Captain Peyton Wise, of Virginia, was
fought iour miles from Warrenton, Va., at
4 o’clock this afternoon.
Colouel Campbell was Lewis’ second,
and General l'ayue, ot Warrenton, was
Wises’ second. Wise and Lewis had been
lodging the police and the civil authorities
for two days, trying to meet each other to
light. It was known In Eicbtnoiid that a
challenge had passed, and the authorities
of that city telegraphed all over the
State directing the arrest of the bellig
erents.
The parties fought with duelling pis
tols, ten paces apart. At the word oregm-
uiand Lewis flred at Wise, but shot too '
low and missed him. Wise raised his
pistol after Lewis had shot and fired in
the air. Lewis’ second cautioned him to
shoot low, and he fired too low, the bait
striking the ground near Wise’s feet.
When the shots had been exchanged
and Wise fired in the air, the seconds
interfered, and the affair was adjusted
upon terms arranged by the seconds and
biends. Wise is a splendid shot with the
pistol, and could, it is said, have easily
killed Lewis, but, since accepting the
challenge, it seems, his mind has under
went a change, and lteJid not want to kill
his antagonist. Wise was at Warrenton
waitiug for Lewis and his second, who
were to meet him there, but Lewis came
by tie way of Washington yesterday, and
to avoid arrest, took a train in a different
direction from Warrenton. lie had to
ride across the country ten or fifteen mites
and that made him half an hour late.
The explanation of Peyton Wise’s con
duct in tiring in the air is given as follows:
When he read the report oi L. L. Lewis’
speech, in which the latter said that if
Georg Wise had charged ex-Senator
Lewis, who Is UnltedStatesmarshal, with
misconduct in office, he (George D. Wise)
was a fool and a coward, Peyton Wise
immediately denounced Lewis, and this
provoked a challenge. That when George
1). Wise, who was in southwestern Vir
ginia, heard of the affair he hastened to
reach his brother and to assure him that
he had not said anything against Marshal
Lewis’ character, as be had a high regard
for his integrity. That In view of this
statement, Peyton Wise saw he had been
hasty. But he had gone too far to with
draw, ;o he determined to meet Lewis, re
ceive Lis shot and to fire his own pistol in
the air, aud let explanations he made
after the exchange of shots. This course
he adopted.
Ex-Congressman John Ambler Smith,
who is a son-in-law of ex-Seuator Lewis,
says that this morning George Wise sent
Thomas Jessup Miller, a lawyer of this
place, to him to inquire where L. L. Lew
is was; that lie (Smith) returned a reply
hat he didn’t know, as be had Lotliing to
do with the affair. Smith says Millto
came a second time on the same missfoer
aud then admitted that he representn,
George Wise. Smith states that he sent
lack word to Wise that if he had corns to
Washington to fight Lewis, he was not in
ti e city, but that be (Smith) wa3 willing
to represent Lewis, and, if Wise wanted
to fight, lie could communicate with him;
that he (Smith) would assume the respon
sibility for what Lewis had said against
George Wise, and the latter could get
satiafactiou from him at any
time. George Wise seems to have
come down to try to prevent a fight, and
it is Intimated that new that Ll< b other’s
difficulty is over he may call Smith to ac
count. There are quite a number of the
Lewis family aud several of the Wise
hoys. Each family will stand together,
and now that bad blood has been stiired
upit may not end Lore, so it is said.
A friend of George Wise’s says that he
will not fight a duel if he can help it, as
he is a member of the next Congress.
These Wise boys are nephews of the - late
Henry A. Wise, whose sons arc prominent
Readjiuters. Peyton Wise aud Lewis
parted friends, and uuless other members
of the families embroil them again, will
probably remain so.
The duel fought near Warrenton to day
crew out of an alleged attack of George
Wise upon ex-Sanator and United Stales
Marsha! Lewis, charging him wiili using
his office to oppress the people of Vir
ginia. Lewis’ brother, who is United
Slates District Attorney of Virginia, said
in a speech at Petersburg the other night,
that it George Wise made the alleged at
tack he was a fool and a coward. Peyton
Wise, George’s brother, in the absence of
George, took up the matter aud de
nounced District Attorney Lewis as a
“coward, liar and fool,” whereupon the
latter challenged him and they met to
day.

AYER’S AGUE CURE,
For the Speedy Belief of
Fever and Ague, Intermittent Fever,Chill
Fever, Remittent Fever, Dumb Ague,
Periodical or Bilious Fever, etc.,
And indeed all the affections which ariuc
from malarious, marshy or mi-
. asmatic poisons.
Has been widely used during
the last twenty-five yea in. in
in the treatment of theae dis
tressing diseases, and with
such* unvarying success that
it has gained the reputation
of being infallible. The
shakes, or ohills once broken
by it, do not return until the disease is con
tracted again. This has made it an ac
cepted remedy, and trusted specific, for tho
Fever and Ague of the West, and the Chills
and Fever of tho South.
Ayer’s Ague Cure eradicate* the noxious
poison from the system, and leaves the pa
tient os well as before the attack. It thor
oughly expels the disease, so that no Liver
Complaints, Rheumatism, Neuralgia, Dys-
entery, or Debility follow to cure, but. if
taken ocaiBiuncily by patients exposed to
malaria, it will expel the poison and pro
tect them from attack. Travelers and tem
porary residents in Fever and Ague locali
ties are thus enabled to defy the disease.
The General Debility which is so apt to en
sue from continued exposure to Malaria
and Miasm, has no speedier remedy.
For Liver complaints, it is an excellent
remedy
