SELECTION Or LOCALtTT.
On the selection of :i proper locality for a
,lant bed, and its preparation, largely do-
ends the timely supply, of strong, UnnltUy
Jants, without which it is impossible to
JS a crop of fine grade. The planter,
ht-refore, cannot be too careful in choosing
sheltered spot, neither too wet nor too
,v ns rich naturally as can be found, and
vested so as to possess different degrees
'(T'lnto the woods, original forest if
lossible, and select a spot near n branch
stream of water, embracing both hill-
ide and flat, and hairing a southern or
Ltheastern exposure, protected by woods
,n the north. Burn over the plat intended
or plants, cither by the old or new
1 ctbod. The first consists in placing
J\vu ft bed of wood on Bmall skids three
,r four feet apart on the gTound, well
r four feet apart on uie
eared and raked. Then fire this bed of
oud and permit it to remain burning
enough to cook the soil brown for
Gf rTch deep. With hooks, or old
i fastened to long poles, puli the burn-
mnss of brands a distance of four and
half or five feet, throw on brush and
nl and continue burning and moving
fire until the bed is burned over. Never
ira when the land is wet. It will require
„n one and a half to two hours to cook
e soil properly.
Or better still: Rake over nicely the
‘at to bo burned, then place down poles
mi two to four inches in diameter, three
d a half to four feet opart, over the
,tire surface to be burned. Then place
ush thickly over the plat and weight
wn with wood, over which throw leaves,
ash or other combustible material;- over
is sprinkle kerosene oil, and set the
hole' on fire and bum at one opera-
|°lliit any mode of burning the plat will
Lfice, provided that it is effectually done.
|ftcr the plat has burned and has cooled,
Iko off the large coais and brands, but
, tic ashes remain, as they are essential-
a first-class manure. Then coulter over
JO plat deeply, or break with grub hoes,
jnd make fine the soil by repented chop-
ling mid raking, observing not to bring
" o subsoil to the surface, and remove nil
ots and tufts. Manure from the stable,
log pen or poultry house, or some reliable
Lmmercial fertilizer (I use tho ‘'Anchor
Irnnd") should be chopped into nnd
lioroughly incorporated with the soil while
Irtpnring the bed to bo sown. Experi
ence has demonstrated that it is belter to
Lso both. But beware of using manure
hutaining grass seed. The judgment of
bo planter must guide this stage; but it
(ere well to remind him that tho tobacco
■ant rarely responds to hommpatlno dosss
T plant food, bat the allopnthio usage
hits it best.
I Sow at tho rato of a tablespoonfnl of
cil, which is abont half an ounce, on
cry fifty square yards at first sowing,
bwing and later rosow with a heaping teo-
lioimful over tho same surface, to securo a
liod stand. Injury by frost or bugs may
lipiiro a third or fourth sowing. Sow a
Ittie thick rather than too thin to moot com
pngencics, nnd secure a good stand in
Ime.
Tho heat way to sow the seeds is to mix
Bu m thoroughly with s fertilizer or dry
1-hes, and sow once regularly over the bed,
Tserving seed enough to cross sow to pro
mote regularity. Tho tobacco seed is tho
hnsllost of all farm seeds, and consequent
b needs a light cuvciiiig. It the seed ate
Iiwu before tho 20th of February, tho
it way is to firm tho surface of tho bed
treading it over closely, hut if sown
Iter, sweep lightly over with a brash or
|ght rake. Then run surface drains through
»beil, with inclination enough to pass off
s water. To do this properly, run them
f four or five feet apart with the foot, then
[pen with a narrow gruhhing-hoe to tho
With of three or four inches. Then trench
[reply around the outside of the bed, to
|ntd off Bttrfnco water and prevent wash
ths better for the bright grades, which
oaglit to bo planted early to mature, ripen
and yellow, preparatory to hying cured
early in tho fall, when tho most successful
curings aro usually made. Yellow tobac
co ought to he planted out in Muv hut
June plantings usually do beat on 'heavy
dark grades. The planter will consult his
interest by sowing at a proper time to suit
the grades he desires to raise.
HASTENING THE OEOWTII OF IT.ANTH.
As soon as the plants become “square,"
i. e., hovo four leaves, you muv begin to
force their growth, if necessaryJ Nothing
is better at this stage of their growth
than to apply dry stable manure, rubbed
fine nnd sowed over the bed—applying at
tho rate of five bushels to every one hundred
square vuards. Bo sure to have it dry and
fine, and apply when tho plants are drv.
Thia is a'fnvoralde time to apply a good
fertilizer, and the best time to apply it is
during a shower, or when it is apparent that
one is impending.
LOOK OUT FOB THE rLEl-BUO.”
If the “tty," as it is coiled, begins to de
vour the young plants, apply plaster, in
which rags saturated with kerosene oil
have lain for a few hours, covering the
plants with the plaster, if necessary, to I
keep tho little pests from devonring them.
Repeat tho application after every rain, un
less the flies litre left.
A covering ef green cedar brush has
driven off the fly when other remedies
failed, and saved the plants. If the flies
aro numerous, tho planter can save his
plants only by vigilant and constant atten
tion. Hard burning, early and thick sow
ing, liberal and frequent applications of
manure, are the heat safeguards which rare
ly fail to reward the plantor with an early
and full supply of stocky plants, and with
some left for tie less provident neighbors.
Some planters, it such they may be called,
always fail—some never, Follow the latter
and you will always bo right

And saw his coming hour of doom.
