West Point News. CARRIED the joke too far. t IMllroad Conductor Finds Himself In a Tight Place. On Sunday, February 28th, Messrs. .1, W. vj.iv and Wiley Abbott, two conductors on (be iipinswick and Western railroad, took a room together at the Barnes House. Mr. Abbott, it seems, was Mr. Eddy's guest, the latter having invited the former to spend the night with him. In the morning Mr Abbott missed $80 in money which he bad in his pockethook when ho retired. Suspicion rested for n time on Will Scott, o nt.'to porter at the hotel. Capt. R. N. West brook wns sent for, and after investigation became satisfied that the negro was not guilty of the theft. At the smut- time Capt. Westbrook dropped a hint to Mr. Abbott which caused the latter to watch his friend Eddv. In due course of time Abbott be came latisficd that Eddy had his money, and he finally boldly accused him of the theft. Eddy’ at first denied having the money, bnt Abbott was in earnest, and threatened severe punishment, when Eddy wilted, and, acknowledging his gnilt, re turned $05 of the money. He said he had spent the re maining $15, hut promised to make it gieid in a few days. Yesterday Mr. Crine, having learned the full particulars of the case, sworo out a warrant before Magistrate Oreer charging Eddy with the theft, and the latter was ar. rested upon the arrival of his truin yester day afternoon. Eddy does not deny taking the money, but says that he did it for a joke. It looks like he carried the joke a little too far, however, when it appears that he witnessed tbe arrest of an innocent negro, who was charged with tho theft, and then went and spent part of the money. Eddy went to jail last night in default of !»nd to the umount of $800.—Albany Ad- rtrtiwr. Entertaining Ilie Crawford Guards. Mr. Hansen asserts that the figures thus obtained prove the existence of three well-marked periods of growth in the year, further divisible into some thirty lesser stsges. Balk and weight are acquired between August and Decem ber. From December to April there is a further increase, hut nt a greatly dimin ished rate. From April to August the weight nnd hulk gained in the spring period are lost, so that at the beginning of August tbe weight is almost the same as at the dose of the previous December. The growing period, on tbe other hand, is in the spring and early summer; bo that, the two processes do not go on together. Mr. Hansen believes that similar laws are dis cernible in the vegetable world. Be this as it may, he has accumulated a valuable mass of statistics on an interesting subject, ami ore which hereafter may yield practi cal results.
