DiftcnMion Over the MiiffereiV Relief Fond
Bill*
Wahhinoton. April 17.-In the House to-
day, Mr. Forney of Alabama, on behalf of
the committee on appropriations, c alled up
the bill appropriating $150,000 for the relief
of the sufferers by-the overflow of rivers in
Alabama. Mr. Forney described the suf
ferings and destitute condition of thousands
of people who had been rendered homeless
by the floods in Alabama, and dwelt on the
necessity of Congressional action. He read
a telegram sent by a mass meeting of col
ored people in Dallas county, Alabama, to
the Alabama delegation, urging an inline
mate appropriation by Congress, arid stating
that $150,000 was not Mifficient to ade
quately relieve the distress.
Mr. Hiscnck of New York, and Mr. Nel
son of Minnesota, urged the propriety of
an Amendment making an appropriation
for the relief of the sufferers from the late
cyclone in Minnesota.
Mr. Oats of Alabama regretted that he
could not agree with his colleagues on this
question. This measure was confessedly
outside of the constitution, and ho was
one of those who believed the oath of
eftico he took to support that instru
ment, W'as violated when ho went
outside of it and usurped authority to
appropriate the people's money. The
floods in Alabama hau been destructive,
and much suffering had ensued, but to-day
he was informed that every river in Ala-
I bam a was within its banks, and the very
fact that houses had been destroyed would
mako work more plentiful and wages higher.
He quoted from an editorial in the Mont
gomery, Ala., newspaper to the effect that a
Congressional appropriation would prove a
curse rather than u blessing to the fuming
interests of Altummu, uml from the Sclmr.
Times expressing the hope that if an appro
priation passed the House and the 'old
woman from New Hampshire* saw it through
the Senate, the flrst man who got his hand
on the fund would steal it and run off to
Siam.”
In answer to this Mr. Forney quoted
from the Montgomery Advertiser warmly

Newt York, April 14.—A few weeks ago
Mrs. Flora Kedham, a dashing blue-eyed
blonde from Kentucky, went with a hand
some team of sorrel horses to Rahway, N.
J. For a time she cut quite a figure. She
was handsome and entertaining, and wan
trusted by all the storekeepers. Prof. E. T.
Worrencr, a Brooklyn* horse trainer, was
passing through Rahway a few
days ago, when he met Mrs. Red-
ham, who told him that her name w'as
Mrs. De Pierre. Ho greatly admired the
puir of horses slio drove, and made her an
offer for them, but she did not seem in
clined to part with them. A few’ days utter
he returned home he was surprised to see
her drive up to his place of business with
the team. She drove a bargain in a short
time, and a check for $000 was given her,
and she turned the horses over to the Brook
lyn man. 8ke asked permission to drive
the team occasionally. Wornuer agreed to
this, and several times t-he drove to his
place in a coach, and, after riding behind
the team for a few hours, would return and
be driven off in her coach.
Last Wednesday she went to tho stables
and took out the team. As the coach did not
call for her at the usual time, Worreuer be
came alarmed, aud, accompanied by a detec
tive, started for llahway. When they got
there her house was empty. The furniture
had been removed in the night, and many
business men wdio had trusted her were
exceedingly anxious to know where she
bad gone. A detective traced her to Cedar
Grove, but found she had left there, aud no
clew us to her destination could be ob
tained. The last that was seen of the team
was in Montclair. It is believed that the
cman has concealed them iu some stable.
It is said that at one time tho woman was
the wife of a New York broker, but that he
left her on account of her conduct

be arranged. This will throw tho election
in June, when farmers are busiest fighting
grass, and inconvenience them more than it
would at any other time. Then, too, few
if any licenses expire before next March, so
that if the county should go dry, it would
have no effect for almost a year. It wonld
also, as has been the result everywhere,
have the effect of enfranchising anew a
large portion of the negro dement that
have not paid taxes or voted for yearn, so as
to bring them into consideration in the
elections of next fall and winter. It is gen
erally hoped that the M. G’s. will be per
suaded to postpone having the election till
next winter, after the Stnte and county
elections aro over.

DIVING FOR THE OREGON.
Broken In Two From Top to Bottom—The
Diver's Story.
The New York Herald of Wednesday
says: Tho Merritt Wrecking Company,
which was commissioned by the Cunard
company to make au examination of the
sunken steamer Oregon, and particularly of
the injuries by which she was disabled, yes
terday made their first report of the vessel.
They hml a steaming ami a schooner, with
about thirty or forty men on board, an
chored off the scene of tlio disaster for ten
days wit hont being aide to go down at all.ow-
ingt o tlie heavy sea and high winds. In the
ten days only a few hours of one day wero
available for divers, and iu that time they
wera able to do but little. On Friday lust
the weather moderated, and on Saturday
also it was sufficiently culm for tho divers
to work. The report they make, consider
ing the depth at which the Vessel lies and tho
heavy sea running, is said to be very accu
rate and satisfactory.
The fir»t thing the diver saw on Friday
was a huge crack in the hull of the vessel,
about twenty-five feet forward ot the bridge,
on the port side of her. At tho top this
measured eighteen feet aud about three-
quarters of tlie way down about twelve feet
The hull of the after part is twisted out of
lino with the forward part, which goes to
show that tho vessel sheered ovor as she
went down and broke.
The diver struck this division at tho keel,
where it measured about five feet, and
climbing up its ragged edges he got to tho
top and made his measurements of
