THE DECuLETIK UKKBS QUESTION.
Mr.. Potter Hay* that it la all Right If v oq
Knnn Where to Draw the Liar.
Philadelphia Prese.
The other day I enjoyed a visit at Mrs
James Brown Potter’s. Her cosy and artis'-
ttc parlors overlook one of onr most attrac
tive parks. Logs blazed in an open fire
place, tea had jest been served in dainty
cups and we all fell to talking on the recent
discussions regarding evening dresses,
which have called forth remarks from Miss
Cleveland, Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton
and society in general.
It was twilight. Mrs. Potter sat upon a
low divan in such a manner *hat the fire
light fell upon her face. It seemed to me
that she could not look more beantifnl, as
the red glint in her hair became stronger
her eyes looked brighter and her teeth, so
perfect, seemed whiter in the light She
wore a simple cloth costume, and for the
time and place no ball-room toilet could
have been more effective. “And what are
your views on this much-mooted dress ques-
t on, Mrs. Potter?" I asked, after several
had expressed their ideas.
“I," she said, tnrning toward me. “I
think it a duty we owe to society to make
ourselves ns pleasing as possible in our
manner, speech and dress. The low cor-
snge has always been the style for full even
ing toilet, and I think it the most appropri
ate dress, bnt it should of course, be
modest; otherwise it is not pleasing, and 1
have just said I consider it a sot ial duty for
us to please our fellow-beifigs if possible.”
“Then you always wear low-necked
dresses on full dress occasions?” I asked,
""the people, too, and should . "Yes," replied Mrs. Potter, “and I think
eatable “ i ^ a t they are doing. I <ttn agree with Miss t'leveland and know

other Newsy Matter..
Savannah, April 15.—The grand jury of
the United States Court found a true hill
against George Wilder of Montgomery
county for illicit distilling. Wilder was
charged with shooting at the revenue offi
cers last fall, and fignred conspicuously in
the case of Moser and Johnson. Ho was
arrested some three weeks ago near Fernan
d na. He plead guilty to-day and filed an
exculpatory affidavit charging witnesses who
implicated him in the case of shooting at
the officers of perjnry, and claiming to hnve
been in Florida at that time. Sentence was
deferred. Wilder claims to be a native of
Porto Rico, and says that his real name is
Jose Carmeno Keranno, and that ho was
called George Wilder when as a boy he was
brought to Georgia by his father.

LaGeanue, April 15,—The session of the
Grand Lodge Knights of Honor is at
tended by over sixty delegates from all
parts of the State. Macon was selected as
the next place of meeting. The Grand
Lodge adjunrnod at 10 a. in. to-day. The

Pensacola, April 11.—Yesterday all the
vessels in the squadron were ordered to pre
pare imaiust torpedo attacks. It was un-

full Hood of moonlight the attack was diffi
cult, bid the lovely night having crowded
the bagrvygtb excursion boats, the attacking
party pped them for shelter until the assault

guishing the fires and leaving the launch
captured. Two other boats succeeded in
reaching the ship and exploding torpedos,

in nii actual fight would throw scalding
water]
To-flny the naval brigade landed. Ad the
small boats, bearing ten thousand men and
sovdral pieces of artillery, approached the
beach the fleet fired a broadside into the
woods on tho hint! where the enemy was
supposed to be concealed. By some mis
understanding the assault was made at a
point different from that selected. It was
too far from the spectators, and being
off the point tho bar was encountered,
which required the brigade to leave their
boats ana take to the water, hauling their
artillery with them as they waded to land.
The assault was superb, and the artillery
was carried up the bluff sixty feet high in
splendid style. Gamp was then pitched at
Magnolia Bluff, three miles from Pensacola,
