While riding on tho Mississippi Valley
route on tho way to Baton House, n few
days ago, a st.itT correspondent of the States
was tho only passenger in the Pullman
sleeper, “Sicbests" who was not honnd for
Pino Bluff, Ark. Among the large comple
ment of passengers was a gentleman who,
notwithstanding his unassuming manner,
attracted general attention. He appeared
to be from 38 to 4iI years of age. Judging
from his looks he would bo taken for a man
who had labored hard through life.
Entering the smoking compartment of
the coach, the States man inquirod of one
of tho gentlemen what the name of the gen
tleman w'as who attracted so much atten
tion. The reply was: “That is Mr. C. M.
Neil of Pine Blutf, a self-made man, who
started life as a penniless boy, grew up with
the country, aim at the same time helped
the country to grow' up, and U still help
ing it.
“He is the cotton king, now that Colonel
Ed. Bichardson is dead. To-day he is the
largest cotton shipper and planter in the
world. No one can tell exactly how much
that man is worth. I estimate him as being
worth, at the lowest figure, $2,500,000. Not
many weeks ago he advanced to one person
$90,000. The moment he heard of the Hot
Springs fire he forwarded 300 barrels of
flour, 200 barrels of corn meal, 20,000
pounds of beef, besides clothing, etc., for
the benefit of the sufferers.
Mr. Neil being introduced to the writer,
expressed himself as pleased to meet any
one from New Orleans.
“How old ore you, Mr. Neil?”
“Just 33 years of age."
“Were you born in Pine Bluff ?’’
“No HU> I went there in 18oO.*’
“How much mone£ had you?"
“I was penniless. I came from Tusca
loosa, Ala. I was a boy and went to work
on a farm."
“What business do you follow now?
“So many of them that it’s hard to say.
I am in the banking business —pro sidont of
tho First National Bonk of Pine Bluff. I
am s planter, and Lava about P2,000 acres
of cotton in cultivation."
“You are the largest cotton planter in
the world?”
“Ob, no! The estate of Bichardson is
the largest. I make between ten and twelve
thousand bales of cotton on my own plan
