power of any journal to help the General.
Almost every day allusions are made to
mad dogs fonnd in our Btreets. Still the
miserable, mangy curs prowl about tho
streets by night and day. Are our city an-
thorties in earnest about enforcing the dog
ordinances? If not, citizens should imme
diately begin the use of Btrychnine snd
shot-guns.
Juht think of it: The wicked Albany News,
at a time like this rises right up and talks in
this way: “There is nothing more touch
ing nor more humiliating than to see those
who hsve retched the acme of human posi
tions, and who are absolutely secure in the
hearts of the people, go back to the foot of
the political ladder again, and resort to all
sorts of schemes and booms Incident to the
ways of small politicians in order to climb
up the ladder again. What is tame ?"
Gkkekal Gobdon says in his opening
speech that he desires better methods ia
State politics. The great and good Tele-
ciitAVti welcomes the General to its platform.
It shakes his good right hand os an ally, a
little late perhaps, in the war it has been
waging these many years. Cannot the Gen
eral bring along a contingent of his “abac
lately spontaneous' friends to help in the
fight?
F. 8.—The G. G. T. wants better men too.
Gbnebal Gordor arrived in Macon yes
terday en route to Oglethorpe, hut becom
ing absorbed in the great and good Tnz-
oratu after breakfasting, missed his train
and had considerable difficulty in getting
away. It is nthcrsigniflcant that the Gen
cral shonld get left in Macon at the very
opening of his campaign. It suggests the
idea that he may get left here at the close.
But whether it will be on account of the
great snd good Teuobatb remains to be
General Gordon’* Kxplanetlo*.
General Gordon has addressed a portion
of the public in Macon county. Daring his
address he g»Te iiis reason for resigning
from the Senate. Onr correspondent at
Oglethorpe thns reporta him: “The South
was freed by bis efforts and there was noth
ing for him to do bnt to vote, snd anybody
conld do that.”
According to these words his mission was
ended, he had saved the South and there
was nothing to do bnt to vote. The mere
responso of aye or nay to a roll call is a
very small matter, but upon it may depend
very great results. The popular idea has
prevailed that the duty ot a Senator elected
to represent a sovereign State extends be
yond the simple matter of voting.
It has been expected of Senators, and not
without reason, that they could and would
engage in the debates upon all of the great
questions and issues arising one after
another in the wake of a great civil revolu
tion. Yet General Gordon practically con
fesses that he wss unequal to the perfor
mance of this duty, antUthat nothing was
left for him to do but to vote, and rather
would certainly repudiate any effort of the com-1 than do that he resigned. A Senator is
mttteo to control or restrict their mod* of proce-! expected to attend to the wants, the busi<
dure in the appointment of delegatee.
| So far aad am personally concerned, 1 will be
content to abide the result of cither primary elec
tions, or the action of msec moating* tn the several
counties, according to the beet Judgment and pre
ference of the people thereof.
We do not deem it necessary to reproduce
the full text of these letters, ob they are al
ready betore onr readers.
Senator Hill on tlcmlon.
Editor Tkuibaph: In yonr quotations
from the State press on Gen. Gordon's esn-
didaey it appears there has been an allusion
to Senator Hill's opinion of the General, in
u political way. It is always proper to ha
exact in such matters, and it is, therfore,
fortunate when one is able to present a
statement that is not only correct, bnt
properly signed.
In the year 1877, it will be remembered
that the electoral count was made by the
famous electoral commission, which seated
Itaycs and unseated Tilden. The question
to be decided by Congress was the accept
ance or non-acceptance of the commis
sion's decision—whioh, as yon know, pro
voked a heated debate in both houses —
mainly in the House of Kepresentatives of
which Ur. Hill was a member, and he was
elected in Georgia to the United States
Senate while ho wss on the floor advocat
ing the ntility of the commission. The votes
of some thirty members, acting under the
direction of Hon. A. 8. Hewitt, who was the
personal friend of Mr. Tilden, and also the
chairman of the National Democratic Com
mittee, voted for an I acceptance of tho 8
to 7 count ns the safest solution of the dif
ficulty. So it was settled, but there was
considerable feeling all over tho South, be
cause Mr. Tilden did not go into the White
House. On April 13th, 1877, Senator Hill
wrote this ton personal friend: * * “Ido
not doubt we shall be more than t-indi-
errlrri for our course. But I don’t like that
tuiot of a bargain made by John Young
