committee for action daring the autumn
session ot Parliament.
Gladstone declared that he wonld at the
autumn session of Parliament introduce an
amended Irish Home Rnle bill.
The meeting cordially approved the posi
tion taken by Gladstone. The Premier's
followers now express themselves as ssn-
gnino of the success of his Irish policy.
They do not speak as if they feel at all that
any concessions havto been made to tho
Chamberlain and Harrington followings,
but maintain that Gladstone has defined the
government's policy in a way so clear and
satisfactory that the Liberal waverers can
no longer withhold their approval, and
they must rally to the Premier’s Support.
This, it is thought by the government
party, must result in practically breaking
down the so-called disienlers opposition so
that it will leave no Liberal not actuated
by purely personal motives, any further
ground for hostile defection.
DISSENTERS CONVERTED.
A number of liberal dissenters who did
not csre to risk compromising themselves
by attending the meeting, have hailed with
undisgnised satisfaction the attitude of ap
parent conciliation adopted by the premier.
These now openly proclaim their intentiou
to return to their party allegiance, and vote
with the government for a second reading.
Among the firat to announce tneir return
havo been John Fletcher Moulton, Radical
member of Parliament for Clopham, and
Samuel Whitbread, Liberal member for
Bedford. Both were adherents of Lord
Hartington before to-day’s meeting; both
have sinco announced themselves as sap-

London, May 27.—The skirmish between
Sir Michael Hicks Beach and Gladstone in
the House of Commons to-night bos preju
dicod some reaction among the yielding
dissidents. It is now don 1 ted whether the
Premier will withdraw the Horae Rnle hi 1
in the event of its passing a second reading.
At a private meeting of tho Chamberlain
party in tbe limp • of Comiuous this even
ing. speakers referred coldly to tho Pre
mier's speech. Mauy, however, were dis
posed to support the bill. Stronnnus oil-

present measure in committee, after the
►frond reading. Tho followers of Cham
berlain b have that the government will
gladly let the hill din naturally, thus avoid
ing the formal withdrawal of the measure.

London, May 27.—In the Honae of Com

asked whether the government atilt re

bills aa inseparably connected.
Gladstone replied that he had nothing to
add to the speech which he made when he
introduced the land pnrehnao bill.
Hereupon Chamberlain and hia followers
retired to the lobby to discuss Gladstone's
announcement.
Sir Miclial Hicks Beach (Conservative)
asked Gladstone to repeat the statement
which he made at tlie Liberal meeting tow
day with reference to the modification ef
the Home Rule bill and postponement of
the bill after tho aecoml reading.
Gladstone replied that there was no
change which he conld state in afew words.
He said that he had an informal Liberal
meeting to-day on the views of tbe govern

THE ARMS HILL.
Tho House having gone into committee

power to pnt the act in operation bo given

Morely, chief aocretory for Ireland, said
that the government conld not comply with
Heuly'a request to let the lonl lieutenant
