and that yon wonld, protect the interests of
those whom your influence led to invest in
the concern, I w ould now be better off the
amount paid into it My confidence in-
the ability and integrity of you two alone
induced me to invest in it. Certain it is
that I lost $1,536 in the Southern Life In
surance Company, for which I still hold a
policy, and equally certain is it that but
tor my confidence in you and Colquitt I
would not have lost it.
About one year before the final collapse
ot the company I made an effort to get my
money oat of it, offering to take, first, 75
per cent, of the umountpnid in, afterward
CC2-3 per cent, and finally 50 per cent. To
all of these offers I received a positive neg
ative reply. In connection with this re
quest I forwarded a written agreement
from my wife and children, the latter then
of age, releasing all claims upon the com
pany upon the refunding of one
half the money I had paid in. The
only thing I could get was a paid up
policy for the above amount, 1 thought,
ns the sequel proved that the thing
was rotten to the core, and my con
fidence in you was shaken. I have never
received one cent on that policy. I am old
and poor and need it. Yon are said to be
rich. Whether yon reaped any benefit from
my money or not I can not Bay. That yon
were tho cause of my losing it is certain.
But for my confidence in you 1 would nut
have lost it. I took you as surety for the
debt and feel that you owe me the money
and that nut of yotir abandonee you ought
to repay me at least apart of it.

tells its own tale. I can vouch for the ac
curacy of the copy of the dispatch which

Thomasyiixk, June 8 — In yesterday's (Sunday**)
Constitution appeared the following dispatch:
Thomasvilme. June 5.— [Special)— Adjutant Ba
con addressed at least five imudred voters at the
court house this morning. His speech commanded
close attention. General Qordou Is expected to
speak here next week, when he will dispel all of
Adjutant Uacou'a flue work.
Aa the above dlapatch, marked “special,’' did not
sound like the utterances of the Constitution's ape-
cial from this place, whose position Is a warm per-
I ^lo not I sonsl friend and supporter of Major Bacon, and
include fifteen yearsHntereat on this amount. | whoee character for truthfulness is well known, the
I will be more than satisfied with the prin- writer called on the specUl of the Constitution and
clpal—if I can get it, and will * publicly asked for a copy of the dispatch sent by him to the
Constitution In regard to Major Bacon's apeech
here Saturday. Below is the dispatch:
Thomahvillk, Oa., June 5th.—Major Bacon ltd
dressed at least five hundred voters at the court
bouse thia morning. Ut» speech was a masterly
effort. Many who have been heretofore non-com
mit U1 am now pronounced for PacuU. Hi* friends
are strengthened In the belief that he will carry
this county. General Gordon Is expected to speak
here next week.
By a comparison of the real dispatch with the
one published by the Constitution, the public can
Judge how mu-'h confidence to place in the politi
cal news of tho pap»r which U “entirely neutral"
In thia campaign. The Constitution has no more
honorable or efllcient correspondent in the 8Ut«*
than the one In Thomaavllle, but the public would
like to know whether the news which purports
reach the Constitution from all parts of the State
really come* from the places where the events take
place and from one who knows, or whether all
its news dispatches come from the editorial rooms
of the Constitution. A Constitution Beidke.
Political Notes.
There mast have been lightning in that
McDufiie rain.
McDuffie headed off Gordon handsomely.
And yet McDuffie voted against Bacon in
1883.
Tbc Athens Burner notes np there that
the old s tidier, who lion the brunt are for
Bacon.
It was lightning that lost Gordon Colum
bia county according to his organ, and now
it will be the rain as to McDuffie.
It is said that during his Forsyth .perch
oung man rattled Gordon, by askiug him
iy he was not in favor ot a primary in
DeKalb county. He finally declared that
he was. “Then, won’t yon unite with that
Icne Bacon man on the executive committee
and appeal for a primary?'' waa asked again.
No reply was made.
The Haralson Enterprise says: -Gordon
delegates may yet be elected in Haralson
oounty. The wrangle and confusion Gen.
Gordon caused by his visit accompanied by
n brass hand and citizens from other coun
ties beariug much-painted banners may
have gained friends for him. Wo pity men
that can be turned by such.”
It may not b» true, but it is said that
General (iirdou situ up nt night with a lamp
on the bureau and contemplates his refleo-
on in the glass. Occasionally he will sUp
his obeat and uy, “John, yon a-o the
greatest man that over lived, and, hitherto
l have kept the secret locked in my own
breast the handsomest. There, there,
don't frown; I mean it, every word of It."
acknowledged its receipt as I have pablicly
demanded it. I must say, however, that
should you see fit to return my money it
will not buy my support for you. Practical
experience and ordinary observation of
your career havo fully convinced me that
yon are wholly impractical, not fitted in
any particular to look after the interests of
the great State of Georgia. My demand is
one of simple justice and not an offer of
sale of my support for the place you seek
at the hands of the people. Respectfully,
John H. Callaway.

-Plain Talk's" letter in Sunday’s Tei.e
obapu will convince every honest man who
reads it, that General John B. Gordon, war
record or no war record, is not now a man
for Georgians to trust. The facta given
are irrefutable, tho logic irresiatible, and
the conclusion crashing.
The Bordertown News, published at
Georgetown, has this: “An ardent Gordon
man was asked this question in Eufanln a
few days ago: ‘What estimate bad yon of
Alex. Stephens in hislife time?' The reply
was: -I was a great admirer ot his.’ Then
the Georgetown mnn replied with these
chilling words: ‘Alex. Stephens said that
General Gordon was deceittnl and dishon
orable t’ Thete was no reply to this.”
