end of the Canadian Pacific railway, is in
astes. Not a half dozen houses remain out
of G00, and, worst of all, there is large loss
of life. Ten bodies have thna far been ro-
oove-ed, and a number of persons missing
nre supposed to have perished. Ooe short
hour did the whole work. The property
saved is insignificant. A clean sweep de-
fines tbe situation.
A thousand men are at work clearing np
the debris for the railroad company. Twenty
oontrsets have already been let. Many men
lost their all, but are determined to start in
again. The property loss falls directly on
the pioneer element of the new city. Hun
dreds of people are camped out. Thereare
meagre facilities for the relief of sufferers,
but the people of this city are specially
open-handed in their efforts to relieve the
distress. Prompt aid from the Canadian
Pacific railroad is expected.
Families were compelled to abandon
their homes at a moment's warning and
flee for their 'ives. liu-ini ss men in a< arch
of valuables were forced to rash through
the flames and smoke or pn ish. The
whole populace were panic-stricken. A
number of persons sought refuge in tbe
water. One man waa in a well, where he
lowered himself to escape tile flames. Few
of the people have more than the clothes
they stand in.
Of the ten bodies recovered only three
have been identified. Most of the burned
frame buildings will be replaced with brick
atru-tures. Contracts for a large hotel and
other extensive buildings, representing
half a million dollars, were let just before
the fire.
