substantially contemporaneous, and a9sur-
edly more to be relied on than tbe best

years:
“On the first Maryland campaign, before
General Jackaon'a corps entered Boonsboro,
he sent a squad of the 'Black llorae,' com
manded by Lieut. A. D. Payne, through tbe
town to picket the approuchea from tbe

We were soon joined by several from

From an addr.-s by Dr. B. M. Hodges
before the Massachusetts Medical Society:
A ju-tly distinguished master of top
girls' high and normal school iu this city is
reported to have said that a principal quali
fication for tbe offleo be held ahould be a
toed medical education. Tho first hour of
lis school day was spent in g>ing from
room to room, at tbe call of teachers, to seo
mpils who had fainted nr vomited, or were
n "spasms,” in liyste-ice, or in aome other
way bad come to a pass which alarmed the
inexperienced. These phenomena be
clearly recognized as due to fatigue, insuffi
cieut tleep and the want of an adequate
breakfast—a meal which these girls were
too tired to eat, or which they did not think
worth while w acting time upon, when liolm
duties demanded their co-operation, a morn
ing lesaon was to be looked over, or a neg
lected task to be made np, and a long walk
intervened between thtir homes and the
school.
Tbe special provocatives of "delicate
health" in young womeu are in a great part
social. The deleterious mtliiences of a uiul-
tipiclity of eugagements, of tbo exacting de
mauds of ambition, fashion and gayety—
and not unfrequently of an early betrothal
—are intensified by tbe capacity for endu
rance which belongs to tbe so-called weak
er e;x. A girl can tire out her partners in
the “german,” one after another, and a fee
ble wife can carry her baby twice as long
as her athletic husband. The more strum
there is upon the strength of women
tho more completely do they
forget themselves and their mate
rial want. They submit and give no
signs of their emotions to tbe depressing
influenceti of misfortunn or sn unhappy
home. They suffer and are silent with
what have been called “bad husband head
aches.” They stifle a wounded pridejwbieh
is deep in proportion to the smallness ot
the family income and yield to the aggres
sive attacks of neurotio influences (tbeleaat
wearing of which may be the mental) only
when the limited energy their bodies pos
sess is exhausted and which, when once
lost, they rarely have tbe physical capacity
