a It inches in diameter by 18 inches long,
the batt end being winged with rubber tips,
after the manner in which an arrow is
feathered, to secure guiding power.
It was early morning when the white sig
nal flattered to the top of the staff of the
mast on tho cliff, and having previonslv
obtained permission to join the hunt with
Captain Mariano, tho quartermaster was
speedily seated in the stern sheets, awaiting
the signal to shove off. This was soon
given, and six miles to the northwest the
three boats came up with their game, which
iroved to be an unusually large specimen of
he California gray variety. The gigantio
fish rolled lazily about on top of the water,
all unconscious of impending danger, nod
did not even deign to notice the ap
proach of the boats that came npon
either side and behind her. A hun
dred feet away the men lay on their
oars, and Capt. Mariano sighted ovor his
swivel gun. The men bent over their oars,,
with every mnscle ready to pnll or buck
water at the slightest hostile movement on
the part of the enemy. It was a moment
that seemed an age of awful suspense to the
green hand, but suddenly the Captain had
a fair mark presented, and pressed the trig
ger. The boat quivered under the shock
accompany ing the report, and tho eye could
plainly catch the flash of the harpoon as it
cl. nved the air and buried Itself oat of
sight somewhere in the right shoulder.
Attached to tho steel missile was tho stout
tnanila line coiled in the bow, and it bore
the appearance of a flash of brown light
ning as it zigzagged through the air after
itspowerfni motor.
The whale hardly seemed to comprehend
the tranble that had overtaken her at first,
and it was fully half a minute before she
emitted an angry snort and started for tho
bottom at a rate that made the line Hmoke
and emit sparks as it ran over the bowa.
Roth the captain and the boat steerer
leered uneasily into the clear depths ns the
ine stopped tanning oat, and a minute
later the former shouted! “Back all! Baek
hard!” The five ashen blades bent and
quivered with the strain pnt on them, bat
it was none too mnch, as the boat was
scarcely a dozen feet away when the huge
bnlk of the infuriated whale rose to the
•urface and spouted twin columns of brine
high in the air. Before the ani
mated waterspout could repeat the dose
the boat was out of range, both of the fire
extinguishing apparatus and the terrible
flukes that soon commenced to thrash the
water into foam. Her contortions were so
violent that the Captain conld not get a
shot with his bumb gun, which he raised
and lowered half a dozen times without
palling the trigger. Finally the flakes quit
their thrashing, and like a flash the levia
than dashed away at a terrific rate, burying
the boat's how between two walla of water
folly eighteen inches high, but the speed wss
such that scarcely a drop entered the boat
Ibis gait was kept np for a good ten min
ntes, and then the speed coumonced tc
slacken, and the wounded monster swam
easily and qnietly on top ot the water.
The living tag came to a total standstill
at last, and pnlliug around to a broadside
xisitiou the captain was given hia oppor-
,unity. The second,explosion was followed
by the whistling of the rubber-winged
bomb, which buried itself in the great mass
of blabber. Scarcely had the smoke
cleared away from the bow before the
muffled boom of the bomb exploding in
the historical residence of Jonah sounded
the death knell of the poor old whale. The
victim's hags balk grew animated again,
bnt tor only a moment. The tlukes thrashed
violently for a few seconds, while the
waterspouts became tinged a warm red.
Straggles and spouts became more and
mere contracted until, with a last final
effort, tho inwardly wounded monster rolled
over and expired. The other boats made
fast and a bard pnll of three hoars
landed the prize on the beach near the try
pots, where It Is to he out up to-day.

PURE FOOD J$gup.
For raising bread, biscuit or other food, only the very'
best and purest baking powder should be employed. The
use of the ordinary cream of tartar, or of a baking pow
der containing lime, alum or phosphates, carries deleterious
ingredients into the food to the prejudice of the life and
health of the consumer.
The ordinary baking powder contains either lime,
which introduced into the system in too free quantities
causes serious disorders of the kidneys; alum, a corrosive
poison, or phosphates, which are condemned by physicians
as deleterious in their effect when taken under certain
physical conditions.
The absolute purity of the Royal Baking Powder
makes it preeminently the most useful and wholesome
leavening agent known. It contains no lime, alum, phos
phate or other impurity, leaves no alkaline or other residuum
in the food, and its use always ensures pure, light and sweet
bread, biscuit and cake, that is perfectly digestible and
wholesome whether hot or cold, fresh or stale. Its leaven
ing power has been determined the highest whenever
tested by official authority, and all chemists and writers
on food hygiene commend it for its sterling qualities.
