view of bringing the county back into the fold. In
this they may have incceeded. although there is a
possibility the county will yet vote for Hammond.
If this disposition of these counties should prove
correct it would leave Hammond in a close pUcq.
It would be necessary for him to secure the votes of
HeKalb, Walton and Henry, the exact vote necessary
to nominate. To lose either of the counties would
bo defeat. Of these three counties DeKalb ia con
ceded to him. Uis friends think he will carry both
the others, but it will be found that the battle
ground* of the campaign will be In Walton and
Henry. Ho will probably carry Walton, though it
ia so close there as to make the Issue doubtful. Tbe
vote of Henry county baa never been cast for him
yet, I believe, when there was opposition to hla
candidacy, but hit iriends there claim that the
county will certainly vote for him this time. I do
not known that the friendaof Col. Hammond would
be willing to admit that the contest will be nar
rowed down to tbia view of it. As a matter of fact
they will make a contest In all the counties that
have not acted—Newton, Rockdale. Walton. Camp
bell. Henry, Clayton and Fayette—out of which
they are confident Hammond wlU get all the votes
necessary ftr his nomination.
If the campaign should bring defeat to Col. nam
mond tbe result may be attributed—aside lfcom the
personal strength of bis opponent—to the attitude
of what is known as tbe Atlanta ring. It looks aa
though it were a cherished hope of the ring
to get Hammond out of Congress. With the best
elements of Fulton county at bit back he has had
no friendly help from the ring, and to read the At
lanta papers it would never be imaginod that At
lanta has a Congressional candidate in the field
making the canvas single-handed through the dis
trict. The political Influences of Atlanta, if they are
not working in an underhanded way to compass his
defeat, are sitting with folded hands, indifferent to
the result, with probably a secret hope that Stew
art will bo nominated. If Atlanta *
