The brusbmakers* conference was continued yw- terday at America Rail, Jayne street below Seventh. The constitution and by-laws of tbe proposed Inter national union were approved of and tbe organiza tion lorm^lly inaugurated. Briefly, the objects of the union are the obtaining for tbe trade more privileges ami emolument* than have hitherto been accorded them aud the promotion of tbetr material, moral and Intel eetual weirare. These objecta are to bo attained by the utual system of woekly assess ment* to provide against loss of work, disablement or sickness; b/ advancing money for travollng expense; by the legal drfemo of tnemnera in co»o of prosecution for fulfillment of their obligations to the nnlon, and by tbe prohibition of the ployment of children, the prohibition of prison labor and the recognition of eight hours as tho standard of a day's work. Tbe consideration of tbe question of convict la bor occuptod tbe almost exclusive attention oftbo delegate* yesterday, and In this connection the fol lowing re«olntion wav adopted; “Resolved, That we, tbe Drushmakor's Internv- nattoual Cnlpn of America, representing the legiti mately employed journeymen bruahmakers ot the United States, do hereby condemn aud de&oanee the present system of convict labor a* carried on in tbe various mate prisons, reform school* aud correc tional Institutions, whether supported by the State ty, and tha* *»» demand of our legislator*. Gai.vestox, Angust 22. Ah the wind freshened Frid-y « veniu^ there were ap- prebenhions that ni{.;ht tlmt tliero would b« a repetition of tho night h.-foro, hut theue nt away as night advanced. By 10 o’clock the rain had coi-.ed aud tho cloud* broken away. Families who had been driven from homes by,tlie rapid iuraid of the Gulf a water the night before, returned to their water-logged houses aud began the work of reparation, while hundreds of others whose homes, with all their poKHeKwious, had been swept away, sought the much needed rest after the terrors through which they had passed. The morning broke clear and beautiful, tho waters whhh had inundated one-half of tho eastern and southern por tions of the city to the depth of from one to seven feet had subsided, except in low places. The beach ami adjacent portions of tho city for several blocks back from tho shore presented a deplorable scene of hnvoo and desolation us tar as one could see. Tho ruins of hundreds of houses, large and small, *iad been hurled and twisted into every shape, while buck pillars and wooden piling in every direction contiguous to tho beach and exposed to the full force of tho gale indicated where happy homes had stood the night before, but which were swallowed up and destroyed iu the awful maelstrom that then prevailed. All pleasure resorts along tho Gulf shore are either swept away or ruined. The plaza in front of tho Beach Hotel was fur rowed by t. e force of tho waves and piled up with tho debris, while all tho false work protecting tho foundation of tho hotel, with fresh water tanks aud outbuildings, was swept away, and deep furrows wore cut un der the building itself. The menagerie, cousiHiiug ot a long row of cages on tho beach lawn, containing birds and animals, were washed over ana broken, and many of the birds and animals were drovoe4 or killed, while others made their escape. Among tho animals that escaped were two Mexican lions, which wt ro on the point of making things lively when thoy were shot by the night watchman, who received a dangerous wound by an acci dental shot of hi* assistant, passing through his arm. Tho heaviest damage to properly occurred in the vicinity of the Beach Hotel. The wide area devastated by the water makes an approximate estimate of tho amount of dam age done somewhat diiUcult, but it is now estimated by close calculation that it will not fall below $500,000, and may exceed that. Tho work of righting the buildings baa commenced, street railways aro being re paired and travel has been resumed over some of tho lines, but many months will elupso before nil traces of the storm aro effaced. The majority of tho sufferers from tho flood aro of the poorer class of people.
