we need not wait for State aid. Onr terri
tory is small, and good roads would make
every farm iu it •‘suburban.” We have a
wealthy county with n very small rate of
taxation. Much that has been done already
iB in the right line, viz: the establishment
of iron bridges and the reduction of grades.
Now let the roadways be made turnpikes,
capable of sustaining the heaviest loads and
most incessant travel; bnild the roads so
that the man whose team can now draw
but three bales of cotton can draw five
hereafter with the same ease, and the results
will be reciprocal and direct.
It is said that the celebrated oat of the
New York Sun is dead.

Will never corn* to a good end."
Calamity annihilates space and time.
The Richmond Dispatch says: “Charles

exactly as far distant from ns as Provi
dence, Rhode Island. Bnt for the last ten
days Charleston bss seemed to bo herd by
Richmond, and Boston and Providence far
away."J
Accoiidino to an Elberton journal, we
haveaplesant prospect in front. It says:
“When the Senate meets every two years it
is found to be composed almost entirely of
new meo, inexperienced in legislation and
subject to many disadvantages on account
of ignorance of nearly everything that per
tains to an intelligent discharge of their
duties. Possibly there are not s dozen
members that can properly draw or frame a
bill, and, by reason of inexperlonce, are
subject to the crafty designs of the money-
vcightod lobbyist^
Gks. Rosecrans says that the native-
born Americans, whose boyhood was either
passed upon the farm or in a small country
village, make the best soldiers, because
they are, usually, of good physical quality,
and they know bow to do, fairly well,
almost anything. Most of them can do a
fair turn at plain cooking or baking; they
can new tolerably well, and, on a pinch,
can don clever act nt washing clothes; they
oan handle an axe, n cross-cut saw and the
ordinary mochnnical tools quite well; they
nre not apt to be visionary or hot-headed,
and witen it comes to discipline they ail
seem to take to it with manly good grace.

a level-headed Democrat. In a late speeyh
he said; “The Republican party chargee
that tho Democratic party is violating its
professions of civil service reform by re
moving Republican officials for the purpose
of giving place to Democrats. Well, I think
that is civil service reform; certainly no
candid penon would expect to reform the
civil service by leaving in officeholders of
the party whose administration ofpabllo
affairs had mado reform nocessary. The
civil service reform that the country wants
is not a school-master’s examination, bnt
the appointment of npright, capable men to
office, and an honeat and economical ad
ministration of public affairs.”
Acconmxo to a correspondent of the Sa
vannah Times Washington society is suffer
ing: “It is said that Mr. Bdrd, whom Sen
ator Colquitt had appointed chief of the
doad letter division of the Post-office De
partment, is somewhat disappointed st the
comparative insignificance of the poeition
he holds. IIs came here nnder the impres
aion that to bo chief of the dead letter di
vision would give him the same social
prominence as a cabinet officer, and in
stead of being a mere clerk, confined to his
desk from 9am. until 4 p. m., he expected
to have ample time daring the day to ex-
tend his social and general acquaintance.
The outlook is not very encouraging to him,
bnt it ia hardly probable that he contem

Nothing better illustrates the progress of
modern invention and tho ehanged condi
tions of journalism than the feats daily per
formed by some of onr big dailies. The
Charleston earthquake, although it broke
all the lines of commnnieation, was de
scribed fully in the leading journals of the
country upon the second morning after the
occurrence. On the third day many of tho
journals published cuts representing the
ruins, most of them crude, to be sure, bnt
all wonderful when the shortness of the
time intervening and the difficulties of
transmission are remembered.
The Boston Herald recently accomplished
something more remarknble even than the
work dons for Charleston, It Rent
special artist to New York harbor, who
made a photograph of the yachts Galatea
and Mayflower as they began their contest,
and delivered it the some day in Boston,
250 miles away, in time to bo copied and
prepared for publication. Tbe Herald con
tained this pbotographio representation
next morning, and in a few hoars the paper
was back in New York and for sale. The
Herald says with pardonable pride: “We
believe that no one will dispute the asser
tion that this is the most Bignal instance of
enterprise in the picture-producing line
that has ever been known in the history of

to about $400,000 more. These blocks am
increased to $2,000,000 by Baonl’s personil

one-third of the total stock, and with tho
floating support it will get will control tho
election. 1 ‘The movement has been specn-
lativn then?’ ‘Purely. The stock has been
bought and rebonght in speculative circles.
Less than two thousand shares hsve been
sent to New York. Raoul will notonlyhold
his place, but there has been no serious
attempt to oast him.’” Perhaps its state,
ments about other Macon roads will bear
revision.
The New York Herald says: “In a con
vict camp in Georgia there are eighty-sU
negro oonviots, of whom thirty-five ate
preachers.” We do' not know that these
figures are exaotly correct, bnt the Geoigis
chain-gang has quite a number of evsage-
