For several days post the Atlanta Consti-
tntion # hos been blowing a big horn about its
enterprising special service. In last Thurs
day’s issue it said that its reporters would
be the first newspaper representatives to
enter Charleston after tho Tuesday night
shock; and yet, as a matter of fact, the
Telegraph had a staff correspondent in
the city of Charleston six to eight hoars
before a representative of any
other paper in Georgia. As for its
claims about publishing more special
matter from Charleston than any other pa
per in the United States, were that true, it
would indicate nothing, as qnality and not
quantity is the true criterion of a good
newspaper; but the fact is, that on Friday
morning the Constitution had very little
special matter from Charleston. Its first
page was partly taken up with an extrava
gant and exaggerated account of the much-
belated trip from Augusta to Charleston.
However its vain boastings, its arrogant
assumptions, and its miserable misrepre
sentations of ;facts may mislead the few,
its deceptions are becoming more apparent
every day.
Below are given instances of its stealiog
news. Not only did it in yesterday’s
issue take two items of news from Sunday's
Athens Banner-Watchman without credit,
bat it even went so far as to claim them as
'specials." The Banner-Watch man's news
is its good character, its capital of “good
will," and it is entitled to he credited for all
the many items that its exchanges take from
it, bnt it is bordering close on dishonesty to
appropriate its news and then claim it as a
'special."
If these two are pamples of the Constitu
tion's enterprise, it is entirely welcome to
its inevitable reputation:

A aniAT deal of earthquake literature has

tumultuous clamor of the frightened pro-

while above all these chaotic sounds rose the
mighty roar of the convulsion, as of the
