"When Mr. Coleman, of the cotton ami
grocery firm of Coleman Sc Ituy, went into the
store yesterday morning after the mail, ho
discovered that «ome time during Saturday
night the caeh drawer had been broken
open and about a dollar in change had been
taken.
An investigation followed, and it was
discovered that the door opening ou the
alloy was partly open, having been opened
from the inside. No goods were missed,
though there were evidences of drawers
having been ransacked.
Tho robbery « ns in nearly every respect
like that of the grocery house of A. B.
Small on the Satarday night preceding.
The thief had been locked up in the storo
the Dight before, and then with a hatchet
broke open the rash drawer, robbed it ot
tho money and then made his exit by un
barring a side door.
Lieutenant Wood was at once notified,
end, on his appearance with Officer Brown,
tbo discovery of a boy’s barefoot track in tho
alley was made. Lieutenant Wood remem
bered that, during the night, Officer Dumas
had found a negro boy sleeping in a box in
tho rear of A. Uibien & Co.’s store, and that
was in tho barracks. Officer Brown
went to the barracks and, after securing the
boy, who gave his name as Jett Caidweli.
carried him to the store and fitted his foot
the tracks, aud it fit them exactly,
When Jeff saw ho was cornered he owned
up to the burglary and said he hod a partner
the business. They allowed themselves
be looked up in the store, and after all
had gone they broke open the drawer and
cured the money. He had given himstlf
away in the box by conghing, which was
heard by Officer Dumaa. and this led to his
capture.’

ATLANTIAN8 WHO RKPORTtiD THAT
CHARLESTON Id NOT IN NEED.
Atlanta, September 18.—There has been a great
deal of criticUm bore and elaewhero of the Htate-
menta made by tho Atlanta gentlem n who visited
Charleston after the earthquake, to ths effect that
the people there were in no need of financial assis
tance. After witnessing the destruction and wide
spread desolation in that oitjr. it la difficult to sco
how intelligent men with heart* in them would at
tempt to create the lmpreailon that the peo le
overtaken .by such a calamity were In no need
of assistance. Since those remarkable
statements were given to the Atlanta public by meu
whose standing and prominence In the oommunity
gave what they said weight, the people of all conn-
tries, recognizing the extent of the calamity, havo
opened their parse strings and poured their boun

feeling that the people of Charleston were
in dire ue’d. that nearly a half

who are rich in this world’s goods, woull devote
less time to prohibition legislation, to stirring up
strife and discord In the community, and be a little
more charitable, a little more liberal, they might
accomplish a great deal more good.
