The impression prevails and grows
stronger with each day that the contest of
1888 will be fought under the same leaders.
If this should prove true, it is more than
likely that it will be fought upon the some
issues. If anything extraordinary should
happen within the next eighteen months
to create new and exciting issues, it might
unhorse the candidates of both parties who
now seem to be in the lead. Within the
last few weeks several State conventions
have been held, and the Globe*Democrat
has taken occasion to sound the preferences
of the delegatts as to Presidential nominees.
We give the result as an interesting politi
cal pointer at this time:

against the strong and ennning, and to en
able the former to live. Men, aa they rise
whose lives are full of fruitless labor and
empty of satisfaction, it naturally engend
ers tho desire to attempt some new method
of removing the universally acknowledged
grounds of discontent. Weariness and
misery are mighty and per. nasi re coun
sellors, nnd when accompanied by a sense
of injustice may be violent. Convinced by
bitter experience of tho futility of the
platform remedy, at least under present
circa instances, the discontented look
abont for some other. The more
loyal, patient and cool headed band them
selves together in unions, associations nnd
knighthoods for mutual aid, trying to keep
far away from useless politics until such
time as they shall be strong enough to in
fluence them effectively. The inexperi
enced and sentimentally humane, disre
garding the fact that they cannot influence
legislation in even a small degree, conclude
that they can influence it in a very large
degree, so far as to bring about a radical
change in the sooinl and economiolife of the
nation, turning it into a Utopia. Tho
impatient and violent seek to overtnrn
government altogether by preaching and,
the best, at least for ns.
It is often asked: What do these Social
ists and Anarchists want? The answer, if
not single, is at least simple. The good
and the just among them desire justice; the
evil and the unjust, the means of self-in
dulgence without any regard to justice. To
talk of Socialists and Anarchists, ns if they
all belonged to the latter of tho classes, is
anarchy of speech, abont as foolish and in
temperate as any anarchy that conld be
named. What all good Socialists and Anarch
ists desire <s what every good man desires—
justice, whioh means all possible protec
tion by the State for every citizen from vio.
lence, ennning and fraud. Their only fault
is that they try to obtain justice in unwise
or impossible ways. Bnt they are not the
only unwise people in the world. Far mere ■
