The expoi ire of tbe Atlanta Constitu
tion's heard' as publication of tbe miserable
trash of Wif jins, has caused that journal
to perform s me curious gyrations in an at
tempt to wig ;le oat of the unpleasant pre
dicament.
As usual, rben its folly or recklessness
has led it lot i trouble, it comes up sobbing
and sniffling ind making faces at tbe Taut-
obaph. Boiled down, its attempted justifl-
cation is tba it copied tbe srtiole from tbe
New York U irald, that it appeared in al
most every 1 jading American newspaper,
and that tbe Tkleobaph has reason to be
mad with tbe Constitution. Tbis may bo

Tnu Covington tsnu alecon.
That thera has been studied and sys
tematic effort of late to destroy public con
fidence in this enterprise is too plain to ad
mit of doubt.
The readers of the Tsluouaph will ac
knowledge that we have been cautions in
onr indorsements of railroad schemes and
enterprises. We have pursued this course
because we are unwilling to deceive tbe
people, even in matters of such importance
to Macon aa the building of new lines of rail
road.
The Covington and Macon started out
handicapped by the fact that its president
and reputed head was a man without expe
rience in railroad building or management.
Furthermore, his extravagant and contra
dictory statements touching its objects and
purposes were calculated to confirm the
doubts and suspicions of those who looked
with mistrust upon the company by reason
of its official head.
In time Mr. MacheD, who has the con-
crowded with railioad men, but
no anxiety is felt here over
tbe result. We trust that none of onr
Atlanta friends will suffer themselves to be
annoyed at the spectacle she presents. It
will all work out nicely; and when the low
grounds are cleared up the city will be in a
position to help its friends. The road from
Atlanta to Hawkinsville appears to lan
guish; we do not mind saying that as soon
as things get straightened out a little, if its
projectors will come down here to railroad
headquarters, for the sake of our friends
along the proposed line, we will see what
oanbe done to revive it.
