10 THE MACON WEEKLY TELEGRAPH; TUESDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 5, 138B.-TW-ELVE PAGES. MOLONEY Al' MONACO. THE EXILE SPENDS A DAY THERE AND HAS AN ADVENTURE. A Fine Dinner end n Diversion at the Gam ing Table—No Money and no Pan- port—lie Makes Ulmself Known and Is Allowed to Depart. Hew Tort Strr. Hr. J. J. O’Dooohue who returned from Europe last week, met “Billy” Moloney several times in Paris. Billy looked well and seemed to be stouter than he was when he acted as go-between for the boodle al dermen and the Broadway railroad men. The following instructive incident out of Billy’s travels on the continent is told by Mr. O’Donohne as it was narrated to him by Mr. Moloney himself: From Paris, where Mr. and Mrs Moloney had gone from London after a brief so- jonrn, Billy Moloney shaped his ronte for Switzerland. There a-e many attractions within the compasB of a day’s excursion, and the point was debated between Mr. and Mrs. Moloney as to which they should find visit. They might go to Marseilles, or while away the 'hours among the orange trees and chestnut groves of Florence, or take a peep at the wicked place Monaco, where, according to the latest advertisement, “tbo management shrink from no sacrifice to render it ms delightful ns possible to visitors.” Poetry, scenery and natnral wonders yielded the palm to wickedness, and Moloney finally decided on Monaco. The excursion is short and cheap. Mr. and Mrs. Moloney went to Nice, and from there got to Monaco in half an hour. Al though not given to calculate bis expenses too nicely, he thought himself wonderfully clever when he took five twenty-frnno pieces out of his traveling bag after break fast and said to Mrs. Moloney as they were about leaving the hotel at Nice, he sup posed that would do for the <iav. Mrs. Moloney supposed alro that it would. The cost of Mr. Moloney’s dinner would have made a very satisfactory addition to the dail revenue of the potentate in whose dominion it was discussed. But they are infinitely too polite at Monaco to present the bill immediately the ‘debt is incurred One cannot run away without piling, and besides, yon have cig>trs and coffee, and so forth, to add to tho score before you leave, so the pleasure ui p*>- ing is reserved till that moment No one ever saw a high stake plaved for with out an inclination to try his luck as others did. Let a stranger wntoh the fluctuations of th« Minn at Monaco for ten minutes, aud, in spite of himself, ho becomes inter cited, and if ho has any money in his pock et the chances are he wtil make more or less of it before he leaves the spot Billy Moloney was no exception to most of the people who visit Monaco, and con eluded ti try his luck at the gambling ta bic. Be cared little about winning or los ing when he threw down a twenty-franc gold piece on the table. He cared nothin* about the result when the croupior raked it into the tinker's heap, nor did he seem E irtioulnrly elated when, after repeating his at, the coiu returned to bis possession. But ho was amused by tbo process, and so was Mrs. Molonny, who stood beside him, and who, after two or threo alternations, woman like, gavo her advice, which Billy followed. Having at oue time won about a handled franc*. Billy found himself at the end of a quarter of an hour with waistcoat pocket entirely empty. “Have you any money with you my dear?' ho asked hia wife. Not a franc,” was Mrs. Moloney' “Two, then, if yu want, aud the whole lot of it. Does that make any difference?” “To us, indeed, and also to those who dine with empty pockets.” “But L tell you,” retorted Billy, “ I had money when I came here.” “That’s a story. Others have told the same tale; it occurs quite frequently. Have yon any acquaintances here? ,f “No, I don’t know a soul in the place.” “That does not astonish me Ho I thought in the beginning. You probably have a passport, if yon i re au American?” Billy owued he bad no passport “Is it possible for yon to have a name?” maliciously suggested the Frenchman. Billy said be had—his name was William Moloney. “Very good; perhaps related to the Mo loney a of Cork.” “For that matter,” said Billy, “I am re lated to the Moloneys, bnt what difference cuu it make to you whether I pay your bill to-night or to-morrow. I am staying at tho principal hotel at Nice. It’s getting late and if we don’t go now we shall miss the last train. That reminds me, by the way, that I didn't got a return ticket my dear (turning to his wife ) Your waiter here can go with us to tho depot, pay for onr tickets and accompany us to Nice.” “Eh!” exclaimed the head waiter, should like that. I shall pay your tickets. * shall accompany yon! Not much!” “Now be so good,” said tho director attend to me. You couio bore two entire strangers. Yon dine, you amuse yourself, aud you intend to go off without paying your bill. 1 demaud your passport. You say you have none. I ask your name. You say William Moloney. Then again you de sire even this waiter’s money for your re turn trip. All this makes it clear to mo that you appear here for a bad purpose, And what am I to do? Louis, send for the police.” At intimation, which gave a turn to the affair that looked rather serious, Mrs. Moloney said: “Surely there can be no ne cessity for this. Yon cannot suppose that we are swindlers. Have you notning about you, my dear, to give this person to keep till we send over the wretched sum we owe him? There is your .watch; let him hu*e it till to-morrow.” Billy took of his watch, aud while brnd ing it to the director, whispered something in ills ear. The director started back with out taking the watch, and the next mo ment ho and Billy w^re shaking bauds. “Here couio tho police,” shouted Louis, tho head Waiter. “There is no occasion for his prrsonce, said tho director. “I brg Mr. and Airs. Moloney’s pardon for the inconvenience ] have caused them. To-morrow, Air. Mo- louey, 1 u ill have the pleuaure to wait on you at Nice, when you can return this trifle.” (Heoffered a twenty-franc note us he spoke.) With u few compliments and “Bon soil' tho director followed Mr. and Mrs. Moloney to the door. “What on earth wes the cause. Bill, of the sudden change in this man’s behavior? ’ linked Mrs. Molonev, as toon ai'they had entered the railroad car. “I told him who I was, that I was a ref a gee and cf our trouble ut home. Ho bad read ot it in the French newspapers und re* Hu mbert il the circumstance, “ SAVANNAH. THE SCHOOL OK TECHNOLOGY. TRIED TO KILL HIS FATHER. Republican.
