It looks very much if the laborers of New
York were about to elect their mayor,—by
George!
8am Smaj i. ia abusing the Blair bill in
Tennessee, which goes to show that while
Sam’s head may be bumyity on some
things it hea its levels also.
“Georgia seems to
A Boston paper says
be growing weary of prohibition already.
Something is evidently Eroded to wash
down the Georgia crackers.”
Boston comes up with this record: “The
number of children born out of wedlock in
1885 was greater than in any of the previous
ten years, and represents a ratio to each
1,003 births 6.6 per 1,000 larger than the
average for twenty years."
Tennessee pleasantries: Alf says that
whou ho ; nd Bob w*re boys they used to
play marbles with other children, and at the
end of the game Bob would manage to have
all the msvblfa in his pocket. The children
said then that Bob would be a Democrat.
political advantage becauHe of the *trong language
u«*d against such a Union hero a* Sherman, but
other* in the name circles, and of equally pro
nounced vie**, hold that it wa* the right of Mr.
Davis to vindicate himself, and that hi* teuguage
not unjustifiable. The sentiment with Mine,
and this include* member* of both political parties,
ia that Air. Duvi* would have done better to pre
serve absolute silence on the vubject of Ocneral
Sherman’* loose assertions, but theno are of
the clnaa who, singularly enough, have not
objected to the utterance* of the detractors of
Mr. Davit, while at the same time thinking he
ahonld never have opened hla month publicly from
the time of nis capture in 1H*». Upon the whole,
the best judgment here 1* that Mr. Davis ha* done
exactly right in mo effectually disposing of the slan-
den upon bira; and while no one Is disposed to be
little the eminent services of Gen. Khertnan in the
field, some of the bravest Union soldier* say he i*
put in a position where he justly deserve* censure,
and hi* skin must be very thick if he dons not real
ize. The ex-Confederates say they never fora mo
ment put any faith In the charge* or oen. niter-
agsinst their former chieftain, but they are
most glad that lie ha* given hi* crushing rejoinder
to the world. *
It is more than likely that the public will
never again be called upon to read a niiui-
lor controversy. Mr. Davit* is more than a
match for any living man upon the ques
tions that underlie and surroutid the late
war, and with the fate of Sherman in mind,
no responsible man of standing will risk
reputation by a conflict in which nothing
can be gained and everything very easily
lost.
Now is the accepted time to build rail
roads. There have bten 3,071 miles ot new
road in 1880 np to about a week ago, as
compared with 1,0% in the corresponding
period in 1885, and 2,613 in the like time of
1881. The figuers for this year have never
been exceeded in the United States in the
like time except in 1872, 1881,1882 and 1883.
The Richmond correspondent of tho Bal
timore Sun notices this very important
fact; “Rev. Dr. J. E. Armstrong, late rector
of St. Phillip’s church, Atlanta, Ga., de
livered a lecture here to-night. He had a
very fair audience. Auiocg those on tho
ntage were several mininterH, but none of
the Episcopal clergy were among the num
ber.”
The Southerners would not be Democrats if they
surrendered their wish that the choice of tho na
tional nomocracy in tho haxt nomination of s Pres
ident should lull upon tho .'•oath. It is there tb‘t
the bulk of Democratic electoral votes are found,
snd in the natural order of everts it is frnti there
that the elected representative of the party «houM
ome. Rut such is the situation thnt the snemas of
either Democrats or Republicans di pends
npon which ef the two parties
carry the State of New York However
strongly of late years t.be other sections of tho
country have retailed apsinnt the supreme impor
tance of New York lo a Pretdilecttel contest, it has
general.y been * recognised, and failure to do this
hasbHcn fatal. Now York wav the deciding factor
in the oDctton* of Dxr) a id of I AM, aud it will be
again in 188*, snd it behooves ,>wr Southern and
Honthweetern friends to remember that such are
the facts.
In 18*0 the Democrats nominated Oen. Hancock,
against the vote of the delegation of New York.
proposed the name of and rest thrtr seventy
ballots for Samuel J. Ran dell. The welt of that
boh e was that the Republican* carried the HU*e
by a majority of 20.0.0, and General Seacock.
whn<<* prospects up to within a short time of
tbe election r»aielt)) bright, was def.vitsd on a
point where Mr. Randall would have hern fmprsg

PA»n«crfctin nsrt.v. but it wss the fear o! Iris in
ability to car y New York that prevented his nomi
nation in I8H4, and it cannot be supposed that that
decision was erroneous.
The South very generally sympathizer
with the Gazette's tirnt proposition. It oc
cupied anything but an enviable position so
long a* its ©eiibolidiited vote in made the
object of speculation on the part of I He w

York is clearly tho pivotal finite iu presi

But Lire South is not with the G>tZhttc

second proposition, vi/.: the n.miiuatiou ol
Mr. 4 -nnGrdliuC triune. The 8uufitxik«-s to
hfls been arginw him to attend the Alabama
State fair, and his efforts have been supple
mented by those of tho mayor who man
aged the Davi9 hippodrome last pptixig.
It is stat 'd that the President has de
clined to be seduced even by a fast train,
hut that he has agreed to attend the Vir
ginia State fair.
It will scarcely bo mc*:«aary to attempt
to get hiur down to Macon, for, if reports
be true, he will bo quite busy for some
rime to come with the pernicious officials
who have disobeyed bis orders about polit
ical conventions. But next fall he may be
considered fair game for country fairs. If
h» friend* detetmino to push him for an
other term, they will show btm at every
Stale fair that cun ho reached conveniently.
He may not come South, for the South i*
