“Whan I flint emuo to Florida," .aid the
Major, “the old rooidentera told mo (here
wore bardie any snake* in the State. Well,
I've been 'bore twenty live year*, ami I
have seen more snakea in Florida than 1
ever saw enywuere beforo. (You needn't
grin, Professor: yon .IriLk more in one day
tJSan 1 no in., month-) I've seen rattle*
w akes, ground rattles, moccasins in throe
different olylts, and many others too harm
less to mention. I’ve got used to 'em, and
have a sort ot sneaking fancy for ’em, too.
Snakes uiu’t near as dangerous as people
imagine they are. They make splendid
peU, being very intelligent and suscep iole
of a bigb degree ot cnlturo and education.
They are very affectionate by nature, have
» quiet vein of humor running through
them, and form very strong attachments
for persons, places and things. Tuey cun
reason, too, as sure as you are bnru, for I
hive seen instances of it that would puzzle

“When I was living down to Paula ltissa
I had a black snake that was treated just as
if it v is one of the family. It had growed
up with us, yeti might say, for ruy boys had
naught it -Veto it was 0017 about a foot
long, and it got to be over four feet. \Vhen
the children went out in the yard for a
frolic rr off homing or fishing they always
took Bui—which "was the name ot the
snake—along. He was wry useinl in every
way, too. Some days the boys would go
out after btrries or wild grapes and take a
bushel basket with ’em. Ben would coil
tip in tha basket and go too. Well, if they
filled the basket, which toey generally did,
it made a pretty hefty load for two to carry;
so they'd just show the shake what was
wanted, and he'd fasten his head on one
side the 1 a-k-t and his tail on the t’other,
making another handle, so to spoak, and,
well, tear of my boys would carry the load
homo without sweating any one of 'em too
much, If it was brierherrieg they had Bin
would h*lp stem and pick out the brieia
aou sticks and dirt from 'pro,* In that kind
of work he was as bandy as a ten-year-old
gal. When the boys went fishing Ben would
lay down in the boat and go fast asleep, but
when they got through and pulled for shore
he'd wake up. yawn a little and then stretch
out straight, for be knew bi3 place in the
procession was waiting for him. The boys
always used him to string their fish on, und
then one wonld take him by the head and
the other by tho tail, aud they bad as nice a
fish cart as you'd want to see.”
“Major," interrupted the Professor,
“thnm fish must have had mighty big
mouths if your boys could string ’em on u
snake four font long. They probably be
longed to the geueyns retUbus Bnapperibua

• They did have big mouths. Prof tutor,"
rejoined the Major sare-stically. “Almost
as lug as the one under that red nose ot
yourhi.”
“Thanks, Colonel, I believe I will take s

Make was one of the most useful pets I
ever saw aud the handiest reptile about a
bouse I ever heard tell of. Even my wife
got to be very fond of him. She'd some
times hang him across two chairs, making a
rack to dry towels on. Sbo used him to
clean cut the stovepipe w'tb, aud he kept
the pantry and closets dear of all kinds of
vermin. I've seen him take 11 pin between
his teeth and inn it throngh an ant, a fly or
n roach quicker than you oould any Jack
Robinson. Rut the cutest thing bo ever
did was to take care of a family of young
mice. One day mv wife was sitting in the
kitchen reading, when she saw Ben come in
Und of sneaking like, and she knowed he
wm after some meanness. She let on not
to see him, and after looting around a little
he crawled into the pantry, and in a few
minutes came ont and wont in the direction
of the barn. She followed him, and look

How did be earry the milk? Wbj.lie dnxwed
the akin np over hia bead, forming it into
a eort of cup, and oatried it full of milk to
the mice, letting each one sip it in tain.

Colonel, gracefully uucoiling his legs aud
S itting a pint of nicotine over his right
oulder ont of the window, “I beliove that
yarn of tne Major's,for I know a black snake
can take its (kin entirely oft and put it on

always sat at the table with us,'and got so
smart that he conld drink coffee out of a
cup m eeey as tha Professor there can drink
whisky out of an old gourd. How did he
do it? Why, he'd just make a loop around
the cnt>. Hit it np and pour the coffee
right down his thtost, If the coffee wasn’t
too hot he'd stir it np with bis tail first so
m to get all the sugar dissolved. I wouldn't
have taken *1,000 for that snake, for ho
saved my little two-year old boy from
drowning once. Yon see, Johnnie and tho
snake were playing ont in the yard, and
Johnnie somehow got too near the well and
fell in. There was abont ten feet of water
in the well, and he'd have been in heaven
now if it hadn't been for Fitz. The backet
wasn't on the rope, bnt the snake lowered
the rope down, and followed it like a streak
cf lightning. When he got down he found
my Utile boy Hatching a loose piece of
cubing with his tiny fingers. Well, to cat
my story short, for it makes me nervons
even now to think abont it, he brought
Johnnie ont of the welleefe.”
“How did he manage it, Colonel?” in.
qnired the much interested Profeasor.
“Why, he lost tied himself in a double

The Empire having no Parliament or

the laws are ull made, and date ironi old.
The civil Cvide is very short, a matter of
few pages. The criminal code is a little
longer, and is severe, admitting of no ex

crime. The ancestral wisdom decreed that
all tbtsc laws should have a general scope,
ou the principle that nothing is worthy of
being c.rihd law which is not umvcrsslly
applicable. O.her regalutiug measures than
