THE FEAST OK TABERNACLES.
The Jewish Feast Wliic.u Begins To-Night
and Lasts Several Days,
To-night at 6 o'clock begins uie Jewish tout of rab*
ernscles or booths, which lasts seven days from the
fifteenth day of the month Tishri to the twenty-
first, concluded in the twenty-eeoond day by the
feast of conclusion. The first day of the feast of
booths and the feast of conclusion are called days
of holy convocation upon which no servile labor
Should be done.
The feut of booths, which is also called the feast
of the Ingathering, is one of three seasons of pil
grlmsae, whereon all the Israelites were command'
ed, wl ten they were a nation in Palestine, to go up
to Jerusalem and appear there in rejoicing before
The first day of the feMt is set aside to prayer
and rest from labor; the remaining six days are
days of peculiar observance as to prayer and the
above ceremonies, but otherwise aro not dlstln-
ulshed from the nsual work days. On the
tingulehed from the nsual work days, un tur
eighth dsy comes the feut of conclusion, which,
as the rsbbtntcal lore hss beautifully expressed it,
is Instituted merely that God, who is so phased at
the return ot hie children on the new jeer end
day ot atonement and with their sojourn with him
during the feut of booths, may keep them yet
day longer, being reluctant to part with them.
About this time the fall le ending and the winter
season, which, in Palentlne, wu marked mainly bj
the rains of heaven bleesing the soil for next
year's crone begins, and a prayer is introduced i*<
tltlonlng God to aend bis rains bountifully for tli
properlty of the land. During the existence of the
aecond temple, lmmedistely at the end of the daj
of conclusion, an elaborate ceremony of drawing
water and ponring it In the altar was performed
The symbolized God's forwer goodneu in gran tin,
much rain and petitioned a continuance of the
blessing. This was followed by a brlllant dtspla\
of fireworks, a fine musical parade, and a general
'•rejoicing with the Lord." The same spirit thrill
every Jew, though hla temple is no more, an;
though be cannot observe these beautiful symbols
of the put.
In ths city to-night, at half past 7, the Synagogue
will be filled with worshippers, coming to ap,»ear
before the Lord of Israel, as did the Hebrews ap
pear in the temple at Jerusalem

The hhotgua Tournament*
It la quite probable that there will be no shot
gun tournament at the fair aa contemplated. Ob
jection baa been raised by all partita having horses
on the grounds, who eay that the shooting inter
fere** with the racing and also with the horoea in
practicing. For this reason the local sportsmen
have about decided to poetpone the tournament to
• association hoe now plan* for a stand to be
ed on the ground* after the fair. It to to have
a gallery fer ladtea. Beneath will be the apartment
for the gunner*, with arsenal storage room for

gallery for ladies witnessing bicycling races, beee
