THE MACON WEEKLY TELEGRAPH: TUESDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 2, 1886.-TWELVE PAGER.
k DARING ROBBERY.
AN ADAMS EXPRESS OAU ROBBED
OF FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS.
The Exprtu Mt'Fsrng'r Gashed and the
Safe Itobb-d c»f 9.10,000, — The
Robbery Cle%etly Planned—
The Robber FUcspes.
St, Louib, Oc’obor ‘26.—An Adams Ex.
press car attached to passenger train No. 3
on the St. Louis and San Francisco rail
road, which left this city at 8:26 last night,
was robbed of over $50,000 in cash between
here and PaoiSc, Mo.
It appears that before the train left this
city a man, who gaTe the name of Gum.
mingB, presented to the messenger, Fother
inghnm, a cleverly forged letter bearing e
perfect fao simile of the signature of Bar.
rett, the local agent of the express company
at St. Louis. The letter stated that Barrett
had decided to pnt an extra man on the
route, that the bearer was he, and that
Fotheringhim was directed to teach him
the details of the business. The stranger
was allowed to enter the car, and took great
interest in all of the movements ofthe mes
senger, apparently desiring to learn quick
the ins and onts of the duties which the
letter stated he was expected to perform,
Fotheringham’s suspicions were not at all
aroused, and the stranger impressed him as
two mon busied themselves with accounts,
eta, and all went well until a point
between SL Louis and Facftc,
Missouri was reached. In the meantime
the new assistant was informed tnero was
nothing more he could learn at that time,
and he seated himself in a chair, waiting
until some new duties should be assigned
to him to perform.
Fotheriugham was still busily engaged
over his accounts with his back turned to
Cummings. In the course of time it be.
came necessary for him to go to the safe,
and turning to do so he saw Cummings
calmly sitting in his chair with a cooked
revolver leveled at his (Fotheringham’i)
bead.
Cummings cautiously npnrosohcd the
dumbfounded messenger amd told him if
he remained quiet and made no cry or
raised no alarm, his life would not be en
dangered, bnl that if be acted otheiwise,
he coaid not answer for the consequences.
Fothenngham had nothing to do but sub
mit and, according to his statement, the
robber bound him hand and fool, pressed a
gag into his mouth, tied him to the safe so
tbathe could not more and prooeeded with
his work.
The safe had been left open and it took
but a few minutes for the robber to secure
the bank-notes and valuables in the shape
of jewelry, eta He out open the bags con
taining the silver ooin, but he evidently
oonclnded that these were too heavy for
him to carry and be did not disturb the
contents. Of the gold, however, ho took a
goodly amount and then proceeded to make
good his escape.
The road at this point runs directly
alongside of the high bluff, which in places
overhang the track, making the danger of
wrecks from collision with bowlders, which
occasionally fall from above on the track,
very great The trains, therefore,
slack up at this point and run slowly
until the dangerous place is pnssed.
This the engineer of train No. 3 did as usual,
and this offered the robber an excellent
chance of escape. He first locked all but
one door, stepped out on the platform,
lockod the door from the outside and
Jumped off.
The meaaenger In the meantime could do
nothing to release hlmsdf, not being able
even to call for help.
Near Minoko a bowlder had fsllon upon
the track, and the train was delayed »n
hour before it could be removed.
The conductor tried the door of the ex
press car, but found it looked, and sup
posing tho messenger to be bnsy, did not
ask for admittance. At St Clair ho again
tried the door and again found it locked.
He listened for a moment and heard the
messenger straggling to free himself and
making all the nolae possible by kicking
with his feat against the side of the car.
The oondnclor suspected aometbing wrong,
and burst the door open, finding Fotherin-
ham as above described.
He was quickly released, and told his ex.
perienoe.
The robber had gotten the start of fully
two boars, and it was useless to run back
and try to find him. The train then pro
ceeded on its way, and arrived in this city
this morning at 7 o’clock on its return
trip.
Fotheriogham says the robber was about
twenty-four years old, six feet tall, weight
about two hundred pounds, and dressed in
dark clothes, with dark overooaL He
'thinks the robber hail accomplices, as be
seemed to be t-lking with some on the front
platform of the car. Fotheringham, the
messenger, is about twenty-four years old,
and Uvea in HL Uenevieve, Mo. He has
been in the employ of tho Adams express
Company for about four years.
Superintendent Damsel, of the express
oompany, says Fotheringham’s record
been one of the beet When aaked where
Fotheringham was, be replied that ha had
gone up town with lUmtt, the route agent,
and another man. From the manner in
which he made the statement, it is pre
sumed the other man was an officer of the
law, though Damsel would make no state
ment confirmatory or contradietory of this
theory. Damsel said he could not state
the exact amount atoldn, but it was aome-
thing under fifty thousand dollars.
