Sian’s dollar, bnt it must be a good song.
The people, and when I Bay people I mean
thoee who have not been educated in sharps
and flats, diminuendos and crtscennos, but
those whose ears have been tuned up for
melody only, are simply bored by these
com position h which may put ft cultivated
voice to the severest test and gladden the
heart of some old professor. When
yon go to hear ftn operft singer, or some
great songstress, you can get ample proof
of this. After sho finishes her difficult and
perhaps exqaUite song thore is ft burst of
applause, the great bulk of which comes
from the gallery and those of the audience
who do not know 0 on the upoer register
from Q, so far aa music goes. You wonder
why those of uncultivated ears want her re
called. I’ll veil you the reason—they don t
want her to come back and repeat the
coleniific aria, but they know that it is the
oustom for ihe prima donna to sing some
simple ballad tor an enoore. And then
note the ring of sincerity in the applause
that follow^ the Ringing of ‘‘The Lout Itose
cf Summer” or “Way D jwn on the Balance
River!” Such songs as there will live as
long as their is u voice left on earth to sing
them. The no ideal libraries are full

of pretty ballads, and the
writers are grinding them
everyday. Miss l’.xley sang some pretty
things the other night, and were as mticn
enjoyed as tho plcy. The boys are singing
snatches of the "Washtnb Song," tbe "Lul
laby” tnd "I’ll meet you there" on the
streets dow, and tbe mere fact of their
never attempting to repeat even a bar from
the hifalntin mimic shows that the masses
neither understand nor (njoy it. It is well
enough to sing these 'way-up-yonder songs
and play those piano-tipping pliers bolore
an audience of professors and mnsic pupils,
bat there are not enough of these to make
a good paying auilieice, and hence if the

money at the eloor, the programme mast lie
made up of things that will please them,"
