Mr. Randall, one of tbo leading Demo
e»U of tbo country, and the real leader of
the Hon*e of Representatives, asked Mr.
Speaker Carlisle to recognize him, to move
that the House do go Into committee of the
whole on revenue bills. Mr. Carlisle re*
timed, because Mr. Randall was going to
propose a measure antagonistic to the Inter

Co-edocation of the sexes is one of the
most interesting experiments of the day.
From time to time data gathered from dif
ferent institutions in the several States
where the experiment has been tried have
been made public. These are still unsatis
factory. It may perhaps be said to h© Bat
tled that girls are generally more orderly
than boys. In some institutions the girls
have outranked the boys in scholarship. In
all reports that have come within our reach
the girls appear to be more attentive and
industrious. But the problem a* to whether
they can be educated together, with ad*
vantage to both, is still unsettled.
Very demure girls have a very consider
able spice of the mischief in them, which
in boys we denominate deviltry. The an
sals of Vasbar and other female colleges at
test this, and the confessions of graduates as
to their escapades in class days, lend addi*
tional proof.
We have fallen upon a case in point,
which will go far to illustrate our meaning.
Illinois has made au ambitions experiment
in the co-education of the sexes, at an in
stitution at Evanston known as the North
western college. Recently the irre
pressible conflict broke out with re
newed violence between the male Fresh
man and Sophomores of that institution.
This was natural, and waa to be expected
by faculty and collegians. As in the ma
jority of instances the Sophs got the better
of the Fresh and the details were given in
printed bills, interspersed with jokes and
poetry. Now comes in the trouble of the
oo-edncation business. The male Sophs and
Freeh had friends and adherents among the

Cried poor little Annie Balle Bown,
When dying In want and destitution.
In a prosperous Georgia town.
This pitiful petition »m gran'ed
By professors of ChrUtian grace.
Who gave b<-r a fastlonable burial
In a beautiful roiewood case.
O, consistency! thou art a Jewel—
A thing Ilka pear’s and diamonds rare—
From Human vision it fades far away
Into space~ab, we know not wherel
Not even in the ebareb do we find it.
As tbe crippled Annie Belle Bown
Waa neglected tbe needs to sustain bar life
But In style was prepared for tho ground.
It i* true, in tbe case of this poor girl.
Her condition may not have been known;
But is it not tbe duty of us all
To search for tbe worthy who mourn?
Will Christ excuse us at the judgment bar.
When we say, Father, I did n t know,
My thoughts were too much on fashion and pride
To bant up the wretched and poor.
Will He smile on us. when again we tell.
That when the pauper’s life grew dim.
We prepared for her a costly robe
To appear as a cherubim?
And thus swayed by public sentiment,
We gave her a funeral when dead;
While thousands of Qod’a poor creatures
Were crying and djlng for bread.
b! we bor*t' f cur creeds, our Christian faith!
We monr i f-» • • i so wild.
We give to ;b- iui-mou which *oeth abroad.
Abd neglect our owu starving child.
We regard n A the walls of the pauper.
And we curse each other in life.
We profess to be the children of God,
While we are the children of strife.
O hypocrite! thou deceives! no other
Bat your own poor deluded sonl
Under a cloak y«n roajr hide for a while.
Yet. soon you’ll appear on tha roll
Wit i those, who by continual deceit,
Lived lives of deception and sin.
And have stolen the livery of heaven
To better serve the devil in.
