The ollizena will mett at the court house
at half past 3 o’dook this afternoon.
The object aa expressed In the oall, is for
the porpose of considering the advisability
of making survey for a canal.
Since the agitation of the canal question
■which was one of the first outcropping of
the boom movement, very little else has
been talked of by the citizens, discussion
being by no means confined to the busi
ness men. The opinion prevails generally
that with a canal to fur
nish a cheap power, Macon’s invitation to
manufacturers is complete. The superior
railroad and shipping facilities being unex
celled, the geographical position which en
ables the producer to place his manufac
tures in five of the richest States of the
South, the olimate, healthfulness and every
other advantage—all these were good
enough, but there was one thing lacking
and that was the canal Looking over this
list of inducements, and realizing the dif
ference in 00Bt between water and steam
power has made converta of those who
heretofore saw no good in a canal. The ex
pression of one of these will give an idea.
•*I am frank to say I was opposed to a
canal," said Mr. S. R. Jaquea, “but I am
now thoroughly in favor of it, f»nd_ will aid
it as mnch as anybody. I am satisfied he*
yond all question that it is exactly what
Hecen must have. There are few cities in
tno world thst possesses her peculiar id-
vantages for s canal. If built on this side
of tho river it will run alongside or within
a short distance of the railroad. Tbua the
raw material is carried on rails to the door
of the mill and when manufactured
brought away.”
THE FIREBUG’S CAPTURE.
The Police Officers Discover F.lkan's Store
on Fire In Time to Save It.
The capture by Watchman Cherry cn
Wednesday night of Charlie Simmons, the
firebug, proved a more important one than
waa lirst supposed. After seeing him go
into the alley with the can of kerosene, Mr.
Cherry ran in after him and caught him
ust as he was ooming out from behind the
inildtogi. In the meantime Officer Abel,
who had been told about it, came up and
took oharge of him. About 2 o’clock Lieu
tenant Wood and Officer Abel came down
from the city ball, and while atanuing near
tho old burnt building, corner Cher
ry and Third streets, Lieutenant Wood
snuffed fire in the sir. With the officer he
went iDto the rear of tho bnilding and dis
covered the back door of Mr. Elkan'a store
on fire. With Watchman Cherry’* assis
tance a bucket or so of water was secured,
and the fire extinguished. It was seen that
the door bad been well saturated with the
oil and pieces of plank picked up about the
burnt building bad been piled up against it.
The discovery was most timely.
When questioned, Bimmons told the
following story: He came hero about a
month ago trom Eufaula, Ala. On
Wednesday night, about 10 o'clock, he
was in Hammond's bar on Fourth street,
when he was approached by two boys, to
him unknowr, who asked him to walk a
£ ieco with him. Bnpposing they were go-
>g to see some girls, he went out with
them and waa taken to the oil warehouse of
the Utandard Oil Company, below the rail
road. He did not go into the warehouse,
but set down on tho railroad while the other
two boys went into the warehouse by pull
ing off a plank. Then they secured a bucket
and dipper and a lard can full of oil One
took the buoket and went off in the direction
of South Macon, but before going told
Simmons that he set fire to the honaee the
night Defers eo as to get somo clothes and
shoes. The other boy gave Simmons the
can and dipper and told him to carry it
down the alley, in ibe rear of Jaques k Co.,
which he did. They passed through this
alley and went soross Third street to the
alley opposite. He says be placed the can

tho nse of money in elections. The legal
machinery of elections in this city involves
a total expenditure of $291,000 in an aver
age year, and at least $1,000,000 is added to
this in Presidential years. This fund of
$291,000 is practically used, if not to pur
chase, at least to assure aud guarantee the
vote of at least ten persons for each elec
