rhntnidiiy at court in Atlanta, and
Deputy Mughal Creed H Cnnyus wag de-
tailed to look him up uni bring bim in for
trial. Creed bad no trouble in locating his
man in his old haunts, and Sunday after*
oon he went out to effect his arrest.
Stopping in tho vioinity at the
hou-o of ono of the fugitive's bonds
men, ho began talking with
some children. While thus engaged he
wmh sarpised to seo bis man walking up a
path accompanied by two women and in
front of him was bis hrntber with a woman
also. Tbe brother paw Creel first and began
waving Newt back. Newt understood the
danger signal and leaving his two female
companions took to tbe brush. To follow
him Creed was compelled to pass thn
brother nnd the three w’omen. As he passed
tho women grubbed at him and one suc
ceeded in giving tho marshal a pretty good
hugging. Ho broke loose, however, and
was putting down his liveliest licks to over
haul the flying moonshiner, when his
speed was somewhat BCCfcb rated by the
loud yelling of tho women, who had started
two vicious bull dogs after him. Tbe chose
was narrowed down to tho moonshiner aud
Creed with every chanco in favor of
the latter until tbo dogs appeared on th«
sot ne. The dogs ran fast aud were soon at
tho marshal’s heels. A shot or two from
him pUtci only stepped them for a moiren!
or so, when they au’niQ entered the cha .e,
only to be again checked by the marshal
and his pistol. Tho ohose w»h kept up this
way for s=ver«l hundred yards until Creed
fell and tho dogs were about to get tlo best
of him. lie gavo up the chase for the
moouthiner and kept off the dogs. When
ho got back to wuere ho left his horse
hitened the vromen were on hand, cursing
and swearing, and with axes and rocks
drawn, they proposed to make i-hort work
of the doughty deputy in ttshal. A Smith
Wesson g**ntly prevailed and the official
was allowed to depart unhurt. Creed says
this is the first time he ever was run by
dogs and so badly hugged by tho enemy.

While Officer Uolmr s was going eff duty
yesterday morning at 0 o’o ock, ho chose the
V oil St \Miy tu till* city 1. .11 to put up his
tnU and olnb, and started through tho alley
in roarnt Timberlnke's stable. While goi ng
throogh bis eye fell npo<i some Bmall craw-
ers, a broken iron box and a carpenter's
braoa. Oa picking them np he saw that
they belonged to a safe, ar.d snpposing that
Campbell A Jones's ware unit safe hod
teen robbed, Went thero, bnt there was
nothing toindioito that a robbery had been
committed there. In one of tho drawers
the officer saw a small bit of
paper with tho name of A.
L. Butts printed on it, nnd
to Bntts’s coal yard ho started. While pars
ing tho store of J-«c>b Uirscb, on Third
street, between Poplar and Plum, bo saw
the front door opeD, and, on looking
further, discovered two or thrpo Bmall
augur holes in ths door near tho lock. On
pushing open tho door, he found the 8 afe
open, and a glance at tbe interior of tho
safe convinced bim that Mr Hunch was the
victim, and not Mr. Batts. Word was at
onco sent to Mr. ilirscb, who came down
and fonnd that ho had been robbed by
somebody who knew exactly how to get
into a sato.
Tho door of ihe tafe, which was mndo by
Moslrr, Baabman & Co., w s not in tbe
least scratched, but between tho knob and
tbo combination a hole had boen drilled,
uobably with a diamond drill, not mnoh
arger than a pencil. Into this holo a cb'sel
or other tool bad been placed ami struck
with an old axo that was found in the rear
part cf the store. The blow was sufficient
to break eff tho pin connecting tho combi
nation with tbo uolts, and this done, tho
door was as easily opened os if it had been
unlocked. Tbo small ir. n box and
the drawers were forced oat and
curled up the alley and
thrown away after all the
contontshad been removed. The iron box
was torn open at the sides and top, the
small chisel btiog used for the purpose.
In the box WfUt ubout t«rnty uuu*tfi iu
money and a number of valuable papers,
all of which were valuable only to Mr.
llir*cb except some foreign aeonnrits, one
being oa Freiberg for fift* <*n fruncs, series
*25o2 No. 47, and one on Muylauder for ten
francs, h* rios 986, No. 4.
It wm fonnd that the safe-hreAkors bad
gained entrance into the store by boring
three holes in the door with a bit abont tbe
size of the drill used in getting into tbe
sale. Th«y were bored so that by putting
in a pin or chisel into the holes and struck
a hard blow, tbe hasp cou’d be knocked off.
This was dona so n*,ttly and so currectly
that with the work of op* mug of tho safe
proved beyond all question that proft srion*
aU bad done the lob. The cnlcnUtion os to
the pin in tlu safe-lock was no * xict, that
tho drill did not mis* it a hair’s breadth.
The work wss done about 3 o'clock or a
little later. About 3 o’clock Mr. W. T.
NtUcu, who lives in the rooms ov r the
store, heard a noise os cf s jiu thing fa 1 ng,
but happened it was some o* e iu tho s»ore
who belonged there. Th' theory is that
after getting ineide the store which was
ber of matches to put tbe drill in the light
place. Burnt ends of matches were found
about the site and also in rear of the store
where the axe was ob'ained, Theie were
g»c- it piles of rags ubout th*« store, and bow
tho men worked with matches without set
ting fire to the rags is a mystery.
Nothing was htt b hind to furnish the
slightest clue hh to who the men were, ex
cept the work, which was as neat a piece of
bnrghry as ono car* s to see. It is * ride at
that they were familiar with Bafts and how
to get into them.
