THE KENTUCKY ELECTION

Louisville, August 1.—Returns from
the ioterior of the State so tar indicate
very large Repnblican gain. The returns
from'two-thirds of the precincts of this city
show Democratic gains. Kenton oonnty,
part of Culiide's distric, including Coving

polled a much larger vote than the Repub
licans, the Democia'e polling abont their
nsuai vote. Prohibition is defeated in Jet-
iera m county, iuuiuuiug L lUlavUie.
The election for State and Legislative offi
cers of Kentucky passed off very qnietly to
day. The weather was clear and hot. The
voto dona not seem to hare been large.
Owing to the length of the ticket and looal
contests ibe returns ore yet meagre. The
labor and prohibition vote
smaller than was anticipated. In
Louisville the Democratic msjo.i'.y is about
2,0( 0, a Democratic gain ot nearly 2,000
over the list election. The city elects the
solid Democratic 1< gislative ticket, and de
feats local option by a heavy majority. The
county and city gave the Democrats a ma-
j irity of 3,000 Meagre returns from tho

following Democratic ticked is elected. The
estimated majority will be from 25,000

Washington, August 1.—The President
said to-day that ha ftlt it to be an absolute
necessity that he ehnnld in every case re-
qntst those e tie- which proposed to send
del-gat ot.8 to Washington pmveying invi
tations to vt.it them on bis Western trip to
forego that formality and forward their
oominnnicatiots by mail Ho has a full
appreciation of Ilia cordial spirit which
prompts such courtesy, and which is most
gratifyi p, hut it seems to him unnecessary
that such journeys for snob a purpose at
this heated season of the year should be
undertaken. Iu addition to this considera
tion, hessi 1 it had been bis pnrpose to feel
free to absent himself from the eapittl
and White Hou.-e as be ahonld feel disposed
during this month, and to muke no eugago-
ments which would require bis presence at
any stated time. It is probable that he
will leave here the Inst days ol Ssptembsr
aud go direct to Et Louis, and from there
to Kansas City, St. Paul, Minneapolis, Mil
waukee, Chicago, Nashville and Atlanta.
The Et. Louis and Alluntadstesbeing fixed,
it will not be practicable to deviate much
from bis programme. Tbe joniney will be
made by the ordinary ronto of travel be
tween the cities named, and the disposition
of the President will be to see as rnneh of
the country and people on bis route as will
be consistent with limited tune and positive
engagements.
THE DAMAGE TO THE ATLANTA.

appointed to eximine the Atlanta, bergunB,
carriages, fillings, etc , and to ascertain the
damage sustained daring tbe recent target
practice, was received by tbe Secretary of
the N*vy to-day. It is too technical for a
newspaper article for lay readers, but Sec
retary Whitney says the defects reported by
the board and the damages sustained by tbe
ship are tiififbg as compared with those
rumored to have been dircivered, and that
they are such as can be eusily and speedily
remedied.

more than $3U0,0U0, but many of the assets

yet beyond notifying holders of aecnritle*
and other creditors that the affair is now in
their bands..
This evening President Charles L. Phil

authorized the publication of tne following
statement of tbo financial condition of that
institution:
