IVES’S SPECULATIONS.
The Stale Close Its Caeca and the Defense
■teglna the Introd action or Evidence.
Petersburg, AuRuat 8.—The court and
jury, lawyers and prisoner met this morn-
ing, refreshed after a day’s rest, and pro
ceeded with tho seventh day of the trUl of
Langston for the mnrder cf Ruffin. The
jury were taken to the colored Presbyterian
church for worship Sanday morning, and
in the afternoon went to a negro baptizing.
Dr. Bryants testimory as an expert, was
concluded this afternoon. Ht« opin
ion, in brief, was that Ruffin's
wounds were necessarily fatal, and
death would have resulted without
the surgical operation, but that the opera-
tion was not attended with strict care and
complete a^ugements mewsary for the
case. Dr. Bryant will probably conclude
the long list ot experts, who have occupied
the attention of tho court for six days,
when other witnesses will be introduced by
the prosecution. It bos nit yet been inti
mated what testimony will be introduced
by the defense.
The prosecution rested their case in the
Langston mnrder trial this evening. Af'er
a brief examination of two or three wit*
ues.es they proved by measurements that
Langston followed Ruffin thirty feet before
flriDg the fatal shot, and that when ha sur
rendered himself to the chief of police he
stated that i( he had not hit Ratlin it was
not beosuse he had not tried to do so.
Lsngston’a pistol was exhibited and admit
ted by the defense to be the weapon used.
The first witness introduced bv the de
fense was Dr. David May, a practicing phy
sician of thirty years, standing, who was
examined until the adjournment of coort.
He described the operation of laparotomy
as one performed to n very limited extent,
because oi the danger attending it. As to
its propriety there is great diversity of opin
ion. Medical records show that it has been
performed only fifty-seven times for gun
shot wounds, with abont 80 per cent of
death. As for himself, be was not an ad
vocate of laparotomy, bat preferred a less
disturbing plan of treatment, whiota he
minutely described. The eourt room was
crowded to-night, manv physicians being
interested listeners. Dr. May's examina
tion will bo continued to-morrow.
M'GARIGLE’S ESCAPE.
Tho Matter to be Made an Interna-
tlonal Q oration.
Chicago, August 8 —A special grand jury
is called without delay. Its first business
will be the investigation of the conspiracy
that ended in the flight of McGarigle. The
paint and pntty j ib, the biggest steal the
connty suffered in anyone transaction en
gineered by the boodleis, will then claim
their attention. No doubt ia expressed but
that Dr. St. John will be indioted for bis
share in getting McGatigle away. Two
sailors from the schooner 11.tike arrived here
to-night to make affidavits against the
Doctor, after identifying him. The pur-
lose of the depot.it ions is to complete the
egal proof, that will bs in the nature
of a demand on the na'ional govern
ment to tako action. The affidavits of
Canadians, taken both in Canada and the
United States, showing that McGatigle, a
citizen of this country, while nnder con
viction of crime, wss spirited off by citi
zens of Canada for the purpeat of defeat
ing tbo ends of justice here, will be part of
the evidence that will b» laid before the De
partment of State et Washington, and it
;tae authorities there oio act under the law
they will be tt'K<d to demand of the Cana
dian government that McGarigle be deliv
ered np. The mattor is thns to he made

An Outburst of Natural (ia. Catclir. Them
In an Underground Chamber.
Pittsbcbo, August 8.—William Samson
and James •Herron, two employes of tbs
Char tiers Vall.v Natural Gas* Company,
were suffocated bv escaping gas this after
noon while repairing a r. gulator nnder Char-
tiers sweet, in Allegheny City. The rag
nlator is a small subterranean apartment,
six f*et below the street. The two men de
scended into this underground room, and
had been at work probably fifteen mlnntes,
when an immense volume of gas burst
fotlh ftom the regulator, asphyxiating them
in their deep and narrow
quarters. When the gas burst
from the open regulator into
their fsevs, they became ktifled, bnt made
an attempt to close the opening from
which tho gas issued. Failing in this they
tried to climb nnt, but were so ntarly suffix
cated that they could not do so, and cried
aloud for help. An excited throng quickly
gathered around the opening in the strset
and nnmerons plans for getting toe men
oot of the hole were soggested, bnt none
dared enter the gaseous apartment. Final
ly, after thirty mlnntes had elapsed, the
gas was turned off and the men brought to
the aorfsce,.dead.
Investigation of the Management of the
Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton.
New Vobk, August 9.—Shortly before
noon to day the committee appointed to in-
vestig.ri liar; s Ives mi.iisgi nr, nt i f
the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton rail-
rukd met to listen to any statement which
Ives might have to mnke. There wits a
great deal of delay in getting things into
►hape for business, but when things wore
arranged business was lively enongh. The
first thing done wes to receive the resigna
tions of Fresldent Stay nor and Vice-Presi
dent Ives, and the election of A. 8, W’ylow,
of Cincinnati, as president, and Christopher
Meyers, of New York, as vioe-prestaent.
The creditors appointed a commmittee
consisting of Irving A.' Evans, T. J,
Eatery and Jomes Thompson to meet the
committee of diiector-i, consisting of Jnlins
Dexter, Christopher Meyer and Harrison, to
take farther steps in the reorganiz itlon cf
the company. The creditors' commltteo
set immediately to begin the investig ition
of the affnira of the company. They fin
ished the oonnt of the remaining oertifi
cates of preferred stock, and find that about
$4,000,000 has been issued. This is stated
to be much less than was feared. It is
stated by counsel for the creditors’ com
mittee that their claims will not bo placed
in the trusteeship proposed by Ives. The
resignation of both Ives anl Staynor is
officially stated to have been uncondi
tional The meeting was adjourned
nntil to-morrow, without coming to any
decision. Ives bs; turned over his proper-
ty to Waite, Meyer ,fc Dexter as trustees,
and is trying to arrange with bis creditors
to put their claims in tho same hands.
Nothing will be done in this matter nntil
morning, although consideration of the
propoeition has led the Farmers Loan and
Trust Co. to withdraw eleven hundred
shares of Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton
stock from auction sale to-morrow. In tho
exohenge to-day, Doremns, Ives' partner,

Clevelsnd, O., August 9.—There is a
prohibition war at Alliance, Ohio. This
was one of the towns to Vote for Iccsl op

voted out several months ago, and the en
ergy of the entire police fores has since
be n inadequate to tho enforcement of tie

jail sentences have been itnpos d npon the
esloonists, bnt they continued to violate the
ordinance. Last week a temperance dem

dealers ut'.impted to counteract its tifect
by giving away beer and whiskey in the

MAJOR HANSON AT TALLADEGA.
Ills Powerful Speech In Favor ol Protection
Is Greatly Applauded.
Anniston, All , August 8.—Msjor J. F.
Hanson left the Inn last Sunday ufternoon
and proceeded to Talladega by the East
Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia railway.
There be wss tbo gnest of Mr. Morgan
Smith. To-day at noon he addressed a
crowded assemblage nt the court house on
the tariff problem. Ha started ont by say
ing that the prejudices of Sonthern men
and misapprehension of the ef
fects of protection were the
chiif difficulties in the way of a discus
sion. The historical phase was Btated.

policy and coincidentnl with the birth of

The question ia now one of eoonomy
and should be non-political. The
whisky ring desire a low
tariff in order to perpetutlo their men-
strons monopoly. Mr. Carlisle and bi-t
partisans sppeal to Sonthern prejudices
and 8-mthorn traditions when overwoeloitd
with the argument in favor of protection
end against internal taxation. They are
consilient in nothing bnt their inounai.-t-

murderer of Samuel K hn, for wbloh he
was under sentence to bo hanged Friday,
August 19, committed suicide in his cell
last night by cutting an artery of his left
arm, above the elbow. It appears that
after cutting his arm, hi wrapped a towel
around it, allowing one end to rest in a
bucket in his oell, that the dropping of ]
blood might not attract attention. When |

what she should produce. She loses tho

by the employment of labor.
Col Hanson refuted the sophisms of free
trade on the subjects of boyiog in the
cheapest market, sod tbe cooetant declara
