12 IT WAS NOT MURDER. COOK’S BODY TAKkN UP AND THOR OUtiULY EXAMINED. Bat Slicglfl Imtiti That she Saw a Dark Detid ou the Batik* of the Hirer—If Not Cook, Who Was the Mau She Saw Fashed In the Water? Itwse clearly demonstrated yesterday that Robert P. Oook was not murdered. The matter having been referred to the grand jury, that body bad before them yesterday morning the white woman, Mag gie Oalloway, whose remarkable etory has been printed in these oolomns. That her examination must have been thorough is best proven by her answer to tho question propounded to her some time af:erward: "They a«ked me ibout everytling but the kind of bats the men wore. To complete the investigation Judge Onstin ordered a post mortem examination, and appcioted Drs. Wright and W. 0. Gib- sen as physicians to oondnot it. The morning train on the Macon and Covington railroad brought Mr. James T. Murpby, of Hillsboro, aud Dr. J. P. Andre son, ot Clinton, who came to Miooo at committees from tbeir respective sections, and 10 both of which the decrased had many warm and tius fiiends. They joined the pbjsiciene and THE BODY WAS EXHUMED by Undertaker Keating. It had been bnried in the Fort Hill cemetery, in East Maoon, and owing to the advanced state of decom position of the body, the examination was bel l ne«r the gravo ia the open air, Dr. Gibson, assisted by Drs. Wright and Andersen, then dissected the head, making a meat rigid examination. After this the olothiug wae taken from Ibe body and it was examined. The entire investigation was mail,- in the preaenoe of Messrs. Murpty stnd Anderson. After performing their duties Drs. Wright and Gibron wrote tbeir report to Judge Gustiu which was in effect that they had made Ibe post mortem examination as ordered and that they hid not found any marks whatever that would in the leaat in- dloate that the death of Mr. Cook was oauaed by violence. Messrs, Murpby and Anderson expressed themselves as outireiy satisfied that Mr. Cook was not foully dealt with, ami also desire it to be stated that Coroner Hod net Is tolly exonerated from all blamo. They now baliere that Ur. Cook was the victim of an accidental drowning. The remains were piaoid in a new and ne.teoffln and were taken to Morton's Sta tion on the Uaoun and Covington railroad for final interment moon's STOBT. The question now aiiste, what 1* to be- oomu ot Maggie's story? It will be remembered that at do time did she say the man whom she saw struck and pushed into the river was Oook, or was addressed as Cook. He waa spoken to as Bob, but in describing him sho die* a most faithful piotore of Mr. Cook. Hell* resin her story siy that the man desoribed mast have been Ur. Cook, and the blow on bis head might have knocked him senseless, and while in tbit condition he was poshed nto the water. They rearon that the story is consistent throughout, and one of their strongest ar- ganteuu is the Analog of tbo hat the morn ing after the soene related by her, at a point a abort distance below tb« sp.it de scribed. As Maggie bee given aiditiinal points as lo the men she saw with "Bib,” and though she ha) told the story often, she has not varied one lit* from iho first vorVon. Those who do not believe btr story, and •who In olios to the TEBEOluril'a THEOllY that he was stumbliug abvut in the dark try ing to find bia friend, Ur. Uwena, the watch man on the bridge, anil accidentally fell into the river, laugh at some points of the story, and Ur. Owen boots at the idea that bia friend Cook would allow two men to take bia money away from him "If that oowpen over there,” still Mr, Owens, moat earnestly, "was full ot men they eould not soars him, and ho would fight to Iho last. He was a quiet man, never talked mnoh, and had a big heart in him, bat no man oonld aoare him.” This estimate of him is ooncnrred in by all who knew him, aud of oourto weakens that por tion of Uaggie's story. who is BOB? It is evident to those who heard Maggie relate her experience of that night that ehe saw something and that something was horrible. Tbtre aro some who think the entire story was the eroation of Maggie's brain excited by the fames of eloobol; but if this be true thiro is a wonderful c .incidence. Maggie cannot read and yet ehe furnishes the alleged key to locked up eeoreU that tally tx .oily with the tarronodingt. The story was told when ehe was sober, having been looked np fif teen or twenty bonra after a drunk and when the oonld not obtain a drop, and re peated word for word days after. TUB LOCALITY. A visit was made yesterday (o tbo spot de scribed by her. The homo is vacant and is within thirty or forty test of the water’s edge, and for a dark deed at night, there wonld not be found in Uacon or around Macon a more favorablo loo illty. It is oni of the reach rf everything and everybody, and every hing about it looks lonely. Maggie ■ays wben she went to the house and aiirtfd up the ateps at tbo side ibe bean! the voices of the men and then she stood there unseen by them. This is probsble, because at the steps sresrme cedar trees, the th'dow of which would have hidden her. She says when the man Bob was ■truck he full, bis heed falling on a clump of room. The dump of touts is there. She says after he was struck the men pushed bis body into the water Ooe took at the bank sbowa that a live man pushed into the water at that point would have great difiienlty in palling him self out. And ao on through tne entire story, every point, save that mention ed by Mr. Owens as to Mr. Cook’s bravery, is substantiated by the snrroundiDgs. Now that competent phjileians have made the postmortem examinatirn and are satisfied beyond doobt that Mr. Cook was not murdered, the question is re peeled: who was Bob? Is it posslbls that some other man was murdered and his body thrown into the rivet? A Minnesota lilnsa.
