New Yonx Deoember 20.—Tho Maritime

Navy that an enormous taft of logs, sevin-
enty-six feet long and urawing nineteen feet
of wattr and abont fifteen fee. cut of the
water, while being towed from Nova Scotia
to Naw Yoik by tho steamer Miranda, broke
away Sunday morning, constituting a dan-
gerona tb traction to navigation, direotlyin

the exchange roentemeods that a naval ves
sel be ordt red to cruise in lhat vicinity to

seen It was r«pidly drifting cut to sea avd
Into the track of ocean going steamers.
Ship captains are much ixercised and insist
that the huge mats must be eeenred or
blown np.
The oaptain of the Miranda is utterly
worn ont ty sleeplessness at.d soxie'y over
biB late charge. He experienced font heavy
gales in tbe twelve deys he was ont, and
through all •.£ them the reft and its cables
had to be constantly watchtd. A fiiteen

seemed as though it would have to be cat
sway to tave the steamer. The Miranda is
comparatively a new freight steamer of 150
tons, bnt oould barely control the monster
float. 1 he rafts const motion osmDony say it
was calcnlsted to save over $150,000 tor
transporting lumber. Unless it is broken
sp, which is di i med improbable, tho r.ft is
now wandering abont in the traok of Earo-
