But a glorious victory was won by the

General Taylor, though he lost the (lower

The baby carriage parade will be fixed
for the first day of tile Art and Plural
Fair. It will prove one of the most at
tractive and pleasing occasions ever en

wheeled in line would be an interesting
sight at any time, hut one hundred such
babies as are to be found in Albany will
make a pageant more glittering and pleas

From the Chicago Herald.
Like the Jersey Lily, that gorgeous fa
vorite sunflower of New York, Cliauncey
M. Depevr, enjoys the distinction and ex
clusiveness of a private car. Emerging
from its recesses, Mr. Depew meets the in

Mr. Blaine himself is not more confident
in tlie assertions of Bepubiiean success
next November, hut making a strong claim
.upon Irlsh-American votes, would he more
wily in his statement of s; educations than
his champion, Mr. Depew, who speaks of
young Republican c!ul>s “going out like
regiments of Cromwell’s Ironsides in every
State.” Ancestors of tlie Irish-Aiuerican

Mr. Blaine would not be found compar

llow She Fussed Her I.ife When Presiding

From Harper's Magazine.
1 he life of the Empress soon became ut
terly monotonous and wearisome. She
rose at about 9:30, and took the late break
fast replacing lunch in France, with the
Emperor alone, at 11:30. At 2 her ladies
came. In Paris they slept at their own
homes, hut in the country residences they
had their stated turns of wailing, and dur
ing that time lived at tiie palaces.
Amongst her ladies, of course some were
more agreeable to her than others; bnt she
must accent the inexorable turn of prece
dence, anil could not choose her compan
ions. Day after day she drove out with
the lady whose privilege entitled her to
a seat’ in the imperial carriage; day
after day she went to the Bois de llonlo-
ne, and bowed incessantly to the crowd;
ay after day she returned just in time to
dress for dinner; and then came tlie
weary evening, where nobody had any
thing to say, or, if they had, dared to say
it. No one could sit down till she gave
the gracious permission; but this she did
invariably in the case of ladies. Her
ready good-nature would have willingly
extended the privilege to the gentlemen in
waiting, but this was contrary to rules,
and must not be. So tlie ladles sat in a
circle and the gentlemen “stood at
case,” tired out before tho close
of tlie evening. When her majesty

The Georgia Southern and Florida rail

something approaching an air-line. A

There Is twenty millions ol capital back-
