Another experiment tuado by Com
mander Folger is very interesting in this
connection. He placed twenty-five pounds
of wet gun cotton at rest on a horizontal
target near tho ground representing in
strengih a two inch steel deck. The ex
plosion blew a hole seven by eight inches
through the target, and its effect reached
to a depth of eighteen inches in the toft
earth underneath. This was a compara
tively small charge, hut it shows that the
wave of <*«tp!~iw» ••iTeei hsu a tendency to
go downward, possible owing to the tact
that the portion of the charge near the
target has the superincumbent weight of
the remainder of tnc charge above it to act
as a tamping. From this experiment we
can see that the effect of a charge of
dynamite eight times as heavy as
the gun cotton charge used
by Commander Folger will be
terrific if landed on the deck of a ship.
Here, then, is the great power of our dvna-
mite gun. Since It has an elevation of ten
degrees, the .bells will strike much like
mortar shells at a comparatively large
angle with the horixontal, thus increasing
the downward tendency of the wave of ex-
ploaion and creating general havoc above
and below decks. The effect upon men’s
