Correspondence Globe-Democrat.
Washington, Dec. 15.—A man from
Maine takes occasion to inform congress
that be has located the fouree of water
spouts and cyclones. His name is Lieut
Nathaniel Collin, and he says wate-spauts
and tornadoes are the result of volcanic
action. The scat of disturbance, as shown
by a map accompanying the lieutenant’s
explanation, is in the northern part of
British America. The map shows two
volcanoes which, it is nlleged, create the
atmospheric disturbance causing the tor
nadoes and water-spouts. An elaborate
system of ocean currents and air currents,
resulting from these two volcanoes, is de
picted upon the map. Their influence is
explained by Lieut.Coflin in the following
lucid strict
“While living in the vicinity of the two
volcanoes represented upon the accompany
ing map, f became positive of the source of
waterspouts; that they are generated by
vacuum caused by the llamu of volcanoes:
the earth in its diurnal revolutions toward
the east leaves the vacuum formed by volca
noes on this hemisphere hanging over the
Pacific ocean, and the vacuums formed by
volcanoes on the Eastern hemisphere are
actual cause of all waterspouts, hurricanes,
tornadoes and whirlwinds on the Atlantic
ocean and coast. The accompanying map
represents the location of the magnet
pole (about the latitude of tho Arctic circle)
and cause of the gulf stream, viz: th» earth
in itsdiurnal revolution causes the Eastern
hi aisphere to depart from the Atlantic
ocean, leaving a vacuum on the west coast
-of Eurnpe-and Africa; at the Same time
\uo cast Coast of Africa strikes against the
Indian ocean, causing an immense volume
of water to flow around the Cape of Good
Hope, wlrcli falls into tlm vacuum on the
West coast of Africa, and in entering the
Vacuum acquires a course due north,
which soon places it untfrr the Tropic of
Capricorn, aud reaches the equator about
the time when Cape St. Roque, on th<
northeast coast of South America, strikes
it; from thence it follows the trendings of
the coast, bores out the Caribbean sen and
Gulf of Mexico, debouching into the At
lantic through the Straits of Florida,
where it is met by a pirtion of the same
that (lowed east of the Island of Cuba; this
strikes the volume as it comes from the
Straits of Florida, cau ing it to flow close
to the coast of Florida, aud in its turnings
causes a deposit of the coarsest sediment,
ihtreby forming the Bahama Banks;
thence it follows the trendings of the At
lantic coast opposite the Georges Banks,
where, by doubling its width, it halves its
velocity, which is the actual cause of the
finersedtmeut of the Georges Banks; from'
thence it continues north, strikiog the
Island of New Koundland, and is nearly
lor t as a current after depositing the 6neit
i diluent of the Gulf Stream, which forms
the Grand Banks, or lhnks of Newfound
land, although the stream U traced across
the Atlantic to the Irish and British Chan
nels and is lost in >he Bay of Biscay, on
the coast of France. The* reason for the
warm temperature of its waters is the fact
that four-fifths of its length is bt tween the
Tropics of Cancer and Capriiorn, absorb
ingcalurir, and but one-fifth of its length
js disbursing it."
HATING IN TRINITY PULPIT.
A Strange Scene tu tho Great Church-

will throw something among these people
that will be stronger than my language tc-
! day before long."
One of the strangest scenes that the peo
ple who attended Trinity church were
ever called upon to witness occurred in
that stately church yesterday, when “Lewis
the Light, also and better known as “Lewis
the Lunatic,” got up in the pulpit, while
the church was crowded with people, and
proclaimed himself the dominator and
judge of tho world, and consigned ail others
to perdition.
Advent services have been held in Trin
ity church during the last week at noon
each day. Yesterday the church was
crowded before 12 o’clock, aud a few min
utes before Canon Knox-Little entered the
church Lewis arose from a seat near the
front, and walking rapidly up to tho pul
pit, mounted the stairs, and on arriving at
the place where the preacher stands, threw
back a black robe which concealed his
white sui’, with a blood red heart over the
breast, and exclaimed in a loud voice:
"Bdiold my advent as your judge I” |
Then he throw out among the congrega
tion a quantity of small circulars, on which
was printed:
PROCLAMATION.

A Good HUhop.
From the Nashville Christian Advocate.
Bishop .McTyeiro is still quite sick, but
we are pleased to announce to the church
that their faithful servant has, it is hoped,
passed the crisis of his attack, and is' now
on the road to convalescence. His condi
tion has been such as to excite the gravest
solicitude, and perhaps all the more so be
cause of the fact that he has for tho greater
part of his life been blessed with the most
robust health.
The expressions that come from so many
quarters indicate how strong and pervad
ing is the realization of the value of the
life of our bishop, and what a hold lie has
upon the esteem nnd aHVe’irvn nf the
church to which he has given latiurs so
abundant and efficlet'-. L*t pm-.iT bo

Who’s all right; Lewis the Light.
Then he returned to his feat by tho
side of his wife, who was sitting quietly on
one.of the front seals. It was all done so
qaicklv that the congregation were speech-
ltss with surprise. When they had suffici
ently recovered, a number of men arose
from their seals and it seemed probable
that there would le trouble, while the con-
g egation were excited, but the usher.-*
went forward and conducted the man out
of the building. He made no resistance
and he was followed out by his wife. He
had procured a lot of the leaves with the
worus of iue by uiui that arc :usg during
the Advent services, and had written on
the margins: “The Holy Spirit, Lewis
the Light, The Third Person, Accuser,
Advocate, Avenger.” These h* also threw
about the church together with a little
pamphlet on which was printed: “The
new Bible.” It contained a lot of rambling,
senseless stuff.
Not much is’known about Lewis’s hutory
although he has made himself conspicu
ous at a number of public places in this
rity. Some time ago his wife camt|,to
Brooklyn from England and stnrtcil a
barber shop. She did not succeed, how
ever, and then her husband joined her.
She has asked the police to protect her
from her husband several times, but lit
has never been tboDght dangerous enough
to make it necessary to lock him tip.
Ye-terday, after he came out of church, He
said to a Tribune reporter: “I am an arch
angel. and so, naturally went to Trinity
church to'announce myself. People need
col believe it unless they want to. It does
not make any difference to me. 1 am the
devil. They will have to obey me and

A drain of Wheat.
A German expert reckons that if *
single grain of wheat produces fifty grains,
and that these fifty grains each produce
fifty graint more, and soon, there will be
in tb,* second year 2.500 grains; in the
third year 125,000 grains; in the sixth
year, 16,025,000 grains, in the twelfth year,
241, HO,525,000,000 grains. The third
year’s crop would give 300 men one meal,
eaviDg enough bran to feed eight pigs
for one year. The produce of the twelfth
year would suffice to supply all the in-
habitansof the earth with food during
their lifetime.

The Illggeat Five.Mnsted Vessel.
Fromjthe Detroit Free Press, Dec. S
There is an article going tho rounds of
the press teiiing about the schooner Gov
ernor Ames, built and launched at Wald-
borough, Me. It is claimed that she is
the largest five-masted vessel afloat in the
world. This, however, is wrong, for the
largest vessel in the world is at present
wintering at Detroit, and has been
launched since 18S1. She is the schooner
David Dows, built at Toledo by Capt.
John C. Parker of the Detroit Dry Dock
Company, and owned by Mr. Corrigan of
Cleveland. The Ames is 265 feet oyer all,
the Dows 290, 25 feet longer. Tho Ames
is 232 feet on keel and the Dows is 265.
The Dows carries two center-boards, the
Ames one. The Dows is valued nt $70,000
nnd the Amci at $80,00, this difierencc
lying in the fact that the Ames has steam
power aboard to run her capstan and hoist
her sails, while the Dows has not.
HIS TRUIS'CIIARfCTKK.
Some Deserved Trltm'es to Jean Jacques
Ingalls nr Kansas.
From the Providence Journal.
Characteristically Senator Ingalls ends
his denial of having circulated stories
about Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland with an in
sinuation more contemptible than il he
had the manliness to be an open slanderer.
From the Philadelphia It cord.
There are deeps inlo which Senator
Ingalls easily penetrates where Mr. Depcw
cannot fjllow him. Ingalls insinuates
what he dare not say, and the polished
and pestilent scoundrel feathers the arrow
he snoots at the good name of the Presi
dent with rhapsodical praise of the Presi
dent’s wife. In this way he contrives a
new insult f r noth.
From the Phiia iclphia Telegraph.
Mr. Ingalls, while denying, follows up
the denial with a series of scandalons in
sinuations and references towhathe might
tell if lie would, and may tell if he is pro
voked, that are simply outrageous, and
will certainly confirm the prevalent opin
ion that Mr. Ingalls has a large responsi
bility in connection with one of the dirti
est iteces of work ever done in connection
with American politic*.
From the New York TelfffHtt.
Has the time come when a man in pub-
lie lifo in this country can claim a reward
of merit for conceding character to a lady
whose good name had never been called in
question? This query suggests itself by
the verbose tribute paid to Mrj. Cleveland
by Senator Ingalls and the spectacular
display made of this compliment when he
was merely called on to duclaim that he
