LAST SHOT OF THE WAR.
Jud t o f.'rlre T!iI:ih~U Waa Fired In
Placon—Ait Error Corrected.
Editor Telegraph: A writer in the
Atlanta Constitution of Monday says a
discussion has Ceen going on ns to when
and wlu tit the bst gun of tho war was
tired in (.’o wva, and he declares that the
one which killed (?ol. C. A. L. Lannr at
Columinn was "iho very last gun fired
on Georgia soil.” The matter is not im
portant, hut it Is better that history
should not bo put down wrong. Col.
loiuiar fell at the capture of Colmubu*
by Gen. Wilscn In the tipring of 1W3. It
is well krowu that Wilson, after the tak
ing ol Oolurab'.w, marched wit!i hia
foiccb to Macon, a distance of 100 mile*,
rn 1 it is also known to some that at least
olio hostile gun was tired by a Confed
erate soldier in tho defence of Macon,
arid within its corporato limits.
Uep. Cobh «vaa tl>o seller officer at
Macon and, he., ring of tho advance of
the enemy, ho stationed such troops as
wera avaihido at suitable places near
tho city, hoping to hU(XM>8sfully defend it
aguiust the attack of Wilson, as he had
on a former occasion defended it against
Gen. Slonemun. Tho defenders west*
mostly homo guards, convalescents and
men on detaclicd service, citizens, etc.
A few houis before the arrival of the
invitding army Get). Cobb was informed
by telegraph that an armistice hud been
agreed on and that hostilities on both
uidoi should be su*)>cndcd. Ilo at once
sent out a flag of truce to meet Gen.
Wilson, who had not heard of thearm.'s-
tice, and Cobb suggested that Wilson
halt his army where it was and go into
camps until further development*, but
this Wilsou refused to dC, und continued
his advance on Blucon.
The confederates had not been dis
armed nor withdrawn from their defen
sive position, hut it wos generally under
stood that there would b_* no lighting.
In tho city a raid had been mude on
tho commissary, and tbo struct near tho
city hull wo* full of non-combatants, en

the midst of iho commotion
squad of blue c »at* came dashing down
the street toward -Cotton aremiu. A
Confederate soldier foists! his guu and
tired at tho daring truo|ors ns they
charged into the crowd. The report at
the tune won that ono saddle was emp
tied, but I do not know this to bo true,
though I heard the d«*c!iargo of the gun,
